^ Really though anyone who is determined to try heroin is probably going to encounter a user of that substance at some point and get a chance to try it, it might not be like certain east coast cities where you can know where to go cop off randoms from simply reading the paper but I honestly don't think there are many people who have their heart set on a drug who don't get their chance to try it.

I don't think the possibility of addiction is a valid reason to control drugs, you talk about heroin being legal for 'no good reason' but I would call personal freedom, diverting income from violent criminals, getting a product of guaranteed purity and no dodgy adulterants a few pretty good reasons why heroin might be legal.

^^ you'd be surprised how many hardcore W.A drug users (and a couple of BLers) I know that are dying to try it but have never been able to get any amount over the years... (some of them have been in the drug scene for 15-20 years)

I think you miss-understood my post.. I said 'no good reason' because OPP stated "I believe that an informed adult should have the choice to ingest whatever chemical they feel like" so in other words, recreational purposes... I believe heroin should be legalized to some degree, but not for that reason.. The only people that should be able to legally obtain heroin, IMO, are the same kinda people that are prescribed oxys, hydromorphone and other 'heavy' opiates for extreme pain.. (so it should be legalized for medicinal purposes only..)

what makes you think just because someone that gets seriously addicted to smack 'legally' means they won't commit crime to fund their addiction when moneys low?? :? I really don't think it will stop 'crime' in that sense (the only crime it will nearly completly stop would be the illicit heroin market, and even then, I'm sure that market will still be there, just to no real noticeable degree).. If an addict needs a hit and they are flat broke, they may very well do what ever they can (brake ins, armed robberies, ect.) to get it just as if they would if they were buyin it off the bloke down the road apposed to a 'legal dispensary' (lol, didn't really know what else to call a 'heroin shop')

You may already know this, but it is used medically in some countries, including England (under the name diacetylmorphine or diamorphine). Personally I don't think it provides any great advantage over other opiates in this capacity (I'm sure others would disagree), but I think it is a reasonable consideration for it be used in maintenance programs as it is in some countries.

This post may sound a bit preachy and I hope it doesn’t come off that way.

Objective: legalised (on a case by case basis) Marijuana.

Back story: my Nanny had lung cancer and was in the last stages of her life. Had we have been in a country where euthanasia was legal I'm sure the option would have been explored (in the end a morphine drip was used, but as research shows it is not the most pleasant way to go, just one of the only available options).

In the last months of her life she was eating less and less and getting weaker and weaker. We consulted a doctor who at first jokingly brought up the option of using weed as a way to build up her appetite and get some nutrition into her. When we did not have the "OMG" reaction he was expecting and stated that we would defiantly be willing to try it if it was legal, the doctor then went on to "sourcing" the drug for us and advised on how best to administer.

The change in quality of life was UNBELIEVABLE. For the last few weeks it really felt like I had my Nan back, with NO negative side effects.

Had the doctor or any of us been caught doing this it would have been a jailable offence (supplying and possibly attempted murder).

I have NO F***ING idea how we live in a world so barbaric that I could possibly go to jail for helping someone going through the worst time in their life.

I also agree with the whole "it's your body, it’s your choice" argument, but thought I'd share my experiences with a different side of the case.

^^ thats amazing how much cannabis had a positive effect on the last stages of her life.. condolences to your whole family on the loss but, sorry to hear...

I agree on the whole, "it's your body, it’s your choice" thing.. but IMO, that doesn't mean that every illicit drug should be legalized for that reason..

from my knowledge, cannabis can be a amazing drug for medicinal purposes.. but havin that said, through my own and close friends' personal experience, chronic/heavy use for recreation purposes can cause mild to severe side effects.. (from anxiety to depression.. to bi-polar or schizophrenia [although these are generally considered genetic, drugs can bring them out rapidly])

not much for a great result. we gave her cookies, probably a total of a 1/4 in 2 weeks and she was happier, eating, resting better. did not help at all with the actual sickness but she was much more comfortable.
