thirtieth birthday

though you never thought today would come
unstable sunrise proves you wrong
you don't end undone
the ceremony's dragging on
far too long
you want them gone
when you hear
their call you disappear

from the backseat of the car
you'd smile and speak but it seems too far
not sure where you are
the throbbing that your fingers trace
the memory a lie replaced
don't feed the scar
though you feel
it's getting too fucking real

how'd you come to learn it'd be this way
you choke it down without complaint
they can't make you stay
leaving early and arriving late
they know you well and expect to wait
but to see you say
this all ends
do you surprise them or just pretend

no perfection in the future's form
twist too hard the sutures tore
and you can't get more
dose up double shame it's not enough
you understand but you think too much
what you're sorry for
and you know
it's closing in, you're ready to go

though you never thought today would come
unstable sunrise proved you wrong
don't you end undone
the ceremony's dragging on
far too long
you will be gone
when you hear
their call you'll disappear
