Opioids Thinking of switching off Opana

I was put on a two week trial for Opana to see how it would work for me as Fent was getting to the point where I couldnt handle it anymore. But because Opana doesnt have a generic yet, its insanely expensive even with insurance, i wont get into prices but its a lot more than my Fent script. Now OxyContin has a generic, so I already know Opana is about twice as strong as OC so I would need something like double my current prescribed strength. My question is, has anyone made a conversion like this before? Is OC a good substitute for Opana? Or is it just dependent on the type of person? Even if it is, I would like to know anyone who does have experience with it how it worked for them or didnt work. Thanks.

I'm sorry Chaos, i don't have an answer for you, but i'm very interesting at your results with opana or oxy cause i'm on fent too, and i think that maybe i should give opana or oxy a try, i don't fuckin know8)....

I am hoping my dr will try me on opana or hydromorphone. Fent was the best thing for my pain but I had a severe allergic reaction to the patches. And in the uk we can't get other preparations, too expensive so drs aren't allowed to prescribe.

Hope you find the right combo, oxy was good for breakthrough but I never tried xr.

My wife got a two week supply of Opana 10's and it was $340 for 80 pills. That was for the generic and I just about flipped out. That was last month. We called our insurance and they said there was a $750 prescription deductible for non preferred generics. Then it is only $4 a month. She is going to wait and get it again at the first of the year because the deductible doesn't carry over. This is some bad ass medicine if you don't waste it by taking it orally with its 10% Oral BA. Why is the generic so expensive?

^ coz pharmaceutical companies like to dry ass rape people that need the medication, and they know they can get away with it?

Chaos - let your doctor know that you can't afford it and he will get you something else. It sounds like he is pretty flexible and treating you right.

Hydromorphone is a really old drug, has generics and is dirt cheap.

Dont say too much about the actual price Mista, its typically frowned upon. By the way MistaMan23, ther is NO generic for Opana. Endo (i believe that is the company that produces it, has a copyright on the drug formula right now so they are the only ones able to produce it for a prescription) But my insurance has a maximum for the amount i pay on a script which is a lot lower than that, but its still really expensive because there is no generic form of Opana. Doomed, I was put on a two week trial of Opana and I liked it a lot more than fentanyl, Fent messed up my mental clarity too much, Opana is a lot better but it also makes me a little sluggish, and its deathly expensive as compared to what im used to. So Those are the main cons that i have with it. I have a doctor appointment tomorrow morning and I am going to talk about switching to something with a generic available IE Oxycontin.. If they do allow the switch, I will let you know how i compare it to Fent, I was on 50mcg patches changed every 48hrs so it worked really well for pain, but it just had too much of a negative side effect when it comes to my ability to make and quick decisions. I'll keep you guys posted, and update tomorrow.

Which is the best in your experience? And I only take my pills orally as prescribed so the one with best oral bioavailability. I know I can check on a conversion chart but I like to hear first hand if that's ok?

I meant this for muv. I pressed reply instead of quote lol, my brain's shattered from the pain, my bad.

I've been put on just about every opiate that is the "first line of defense" for chronic and breakthrough pain in the past, and fent gel patch preps were always the best at controlling chronic pain.

If you only take your pills orally, you'll likely find oxycodone to be much more effective then oxymorphone, which has an insanely low bioavail. orally.

Been on both. I was on fent and had a severe reaction to the patches, they were most definitely the best at reducing my pain, in combo with oxy ir. But my old pain management dr didn't want me on oxy ir and upped the fent to 100mcg ph from 75. Me and my gp didn't want to do it so I stayed at 75 without the oxy. Then I just couldn't cope with the huge open sores the patches were causing. They took weeks to heal and I have scars now, on my chest etc, and it ain't nice for a girl, I couldn't wear nice tops and stuff.

What country do you live in, because they don't have generic OxyContin in the US since they came out with the "abuse proof" formulation a little over a year ago. There is generic oxycodone, but it is the instant release formulations such as oxy IR, roxicodone, and percocet (oxy with tylenol).

The instant release oxycodone is usually prescribed for breakthrough pain alongside an extended release med such as morphine. There are certainly people that are only prescribed instant release oxycodone alone, but it seems that pain management doctors prefer to have their patients on ER meds for chronic pain.

Probably because of abuse potential. I'm amazed at how many pain management centers consider(ed) opana ERs to be "abuse proof". I know I was given a whole fuck ton because, at the time, that was the common notion (this was before oc 80s turned to shit). I'd say you could try a handful of roxi 30s each day, but it sounds like you won't be able to get that breakthru pain script from this doc all that easy.

I'm also amazed he had you on both, fent patches + any other opiate or downer is not very safe. Sounds like you take as directed and responsible though.

I need to be on both, my condition is crippling. Am currently stuck in bed having the worst pain relapse of my life so far, shitty cold weather.

I do only take as prescribed, apart from a few nights again when I too more than I should but I was desperate and I STILL haven't been able to get my meds fixed yet. Morphine doesn't touch me on a good day, let alone when I am like this. It sucks balls. Should be having a phone consultation with my dr tomorrow, so hopefully I will feel much better then and be able to get to the toilet without having to be carried *crosses fingers on good hand*

Keep sorry typos, I can't fix them coz I can't scroll at the minute. Sorry

^ I have found morphine to be very effective for the treatment of pain, and it lasts pretty long. I don't find it to be recreational though, as it is very much lacking in the euphoria department. :\

if you cant get roxy, get oxy OP 80s. swallow 2-3 = good all day. (NOTE: this is only because OP has a tolerance! not good HR) i would see if you could get vicodin(hydrocodone) for breakthrough pain aswell

I don't know about that. The OP said they use a 50mcg patch changed every 48 hours. This says a 50mcg fentanyl patch is equal to a daily oxy dose of 68-112mgs.

....so I already know Opana is about twice as strong as OC so I would need something like double my current prescribed strength.

Not necessarily. This depends upon many factors, ROA especially. Opana (oxymorphone) has an incredibly low oral bioavailability. In other words, the substance is not absorbed by the body very well when it is taken by mouth. In fact, oxymorphone actually has a higher intranasal bioavailability. If you were to crush up and snort the Opana (not something that I would recommend, in the interest of harm reduction), you would notice a great difference.

Opana is oxymorphone, and OxyContin is oxycodone. Oxymorphone is actually an oxycodone metabolite. So, by taking oxycodone (OxyContin), your body will break it down into a certain amount of oxymorphone anyway.

I'm not a doctor and I can't make any real recommendations, but I know that, if it were me, I would give OxyContin a whirl. Anyway, I hope this helps.

Morphine doesn't touch me, I could eat my entire box of zomorph and be fine lol

My gran, dad, and sister are the same, we have stupidly high tolerances for medication, need extra anaesthesia when having ops etc it's fucked up. My sis is a h addict but my dad and gran aren't like that. I have grown up around addiction, seen the mess from being 12 and had to keep it a secret from my mum. So I KNOW that I cannot abuse my medication, I don't want that shit. And seeing as how I have had 28 months of this shit, I'd say I'm doing pretty damn well. I even went off all opiate medication for 3 months, I wasnt getting relief and got frustrated so I just jacked them all in, including my psych meds.

Not wise I know but I am so stubborn It was a case of what is the damn point when it isn't helping me. My chemist mess up a lot and never have what I need when I need it even though they know when I am due refills and I just got really pissed.

I coped for as long as I could but I knew what was going to happen when winter hit so I started my regime again. I'm so gutted the fent messed my skin up, it was the best thing I had up to that point.

Anyways, rant over, I have hijacked this thread lol. But seriously, oxy ex, hydromorphone xr or opana xr and something ir, I find I do better with a different bt med than my maintenance dose. I don't want to go down the methadone road yet. Oral BA. Anyone?

Well that was a big old waste of time. Thank you uk government for deciding that I cannot have pain medication that I need because it is too expensive. I was only on oxy 6 months ago, they prescribed it then. Drs just been told they aren't allowed to prescribe an even bigger list of medication than the cancer treatments etc, on the nhs anymore. I've paid into the system and grafted my ass off since I was 14 with jobs, started paying tax at 16 while studying and working....thank you, thank you! You're welcome.

Bastards! Got my morphine upped by a pittance, got oramorph for bt. And it as much use as a glass hammer!!!

Meh. Hope you guys get some better news than me.
