Thinking of going on medication for ADD

I am thinking about talking to my doctor about going on some kind of ADD meds.

I have no problems at work, but at college I sometimes have difficulty concentrating (particularly after 2 hours or so).

I also am overweight and think this would help out that as a bonus.

I never been on meds of any kind in my life. I dont do drugs except weed and alcohol. What should i know about these ADD meds before seeing a doc?

Well from the way you describe your symptoms you probably don't have ADD. Im just going on what you've written here of course but being able to concentrate at college for 2 hours is pretty bloody good, even for a normal person, let alone a person with ADD.

Serious ADD fucks your life, lots of simple little things normal people take for granted are simply impossible. I couldn't sit still for more than 5 mins. Couldnt concentrate on ordinary tasks at all. I'd be driving in my car...and suddenly realise that i'd been staring out the window/fidgeting with my radio /generally not paying attention for the last 10mins..id then thank my lucky stars i hadnt died.

Also it stuffs your hand-eye co-ordination..like you'll be reaching for something and then tune out, not concentrate on what you're doing and bang...you've knocked over and smashed whatever it was you were reaching for.

Medication improved my life something drastic..it didnt give me an extra edge...it just made me like a normal person. Still theres no way i could concentrate for 2 hours in class...even with meds.

So if you want stimulant meds...you're gonna have to come up with a lot more than the symptoms you describe.

EDIT - oh and impulse control...or lack there of...is another thing. Do you constantly do/say things before you have thought about the consequences? Do you have so many thoughts running through your mind that you cant focus on any of them?

get yourself ephedra caps (herbal epehedrine) if you can find it. If not, go to a chinese herbailist and ask for ma huang. It is the ephedra tea. you can dose it as you see fit and it is much safer than ritalin, adderall or any other chemo speed crap. (and that comes from someone who likes H) I used to have asthma and a teaspoon of this stuff cooked helped. When we went out saturdays I took like 10 spoons and cooked it up....didt sleep. Give it a go if you can find it (botanical name: ephedra nevadensis, or ephedra sinica)..check wikipedia
