I'm watching Rush which is partly about a new narcotics detective that really likes the drugs she winds up doing in the line of duty. Got me wondering if such a scenario was realistic. It'd be a great topic for a book...any one know of any books about it? Preferably non fiction.

But I'm going to wait and see where this thread goes before closing it. I'd like to hear a little bit about witnessing first-hand, drug-related grimy-ness in the world of law enforcement.
I used to pick up my oxycontin from a family friend, a probation officer, and I know that he also liked to smoke crack on occasion.

Awesome movie! Although I'm sure it's not quite so dramatic in real life, I would venture to guess that there are a fair number of undercover narcs who are willing to get dirty to make cases and end up doing drugs more than they had originally planned.
BTW... jason patric was really putting a needle in is arm. He felt it was necessary for the sake of the movie.

Yes it does happen in the early 1980s the nz police launched a huge undercover program to infiltrate the gangs . the undercover cops were 'trained' to smoke weed. a few cops got hooked on heroin and i think there was a case of one officer who returned to normal police duty who was caught trying to smuggle heroin in the country . these a documentary a 3 part documentary on it. http://tvnz.co.nz/undercover/episode-one-going-under-1618648
since I'm fairly securely anonymous here and on this account I feel somewhat safe in relating my experience on the subject. . .
Many years ago when i was younger <SNIP SNIP> During a certain rough period I started experimenting with drugs. I realized quickly that I could subsidize my adventures by selling. I made a fairly large circle of friends. Some were obviously much more hardcore than others but after a few years in the game I'd risen as high as I really wanted to before things became dangerous and scary. Fast forward a tad and I eventually get out. (I was very lucky and I got out clean). As I watch a few of my friends grow up I actually had a couple become Police officers. One specifically for a local municipality and one specifically for a county municipality. Both were well aware of my past and around during and benefited from it. We remained close friends of course and occasionally we would all still "party". Neither did undercover work so I honestly couldn't tell you about that aspect but I can tell you they always seemed to bring a higher quality product to the party than I was able to find. (and at the time i still had pretty good contacts) Basically the scoop as I understood it was let's say you find a brick of substance A on a suspect. Between you and the evidence room there's not much to make sure some doesn't fall off. I never really pressed them into too many details and I never talked about any possible "larger scale opportunities" since we'd really gotten past that stage of our lives and it just didn't seem respectful of our friendship. Now I should mention that neither of these people where addicted to anything it was kept pretty infrequent and to occasional party times. I actually suspect the party times cropped up when the opportunities for something to fall out of the evidence bag arose. Eventually life came up and we all went on a pretty long sober period. I moved and haven't really talked to them in a while so I have no idea if this type of thing continues or if over the past 10-15 years things have changed in a way to restrict it. I can tell you that even then they where periodically and randomly tested for substances but as I'm sure must of us are aware most substances clear our fairly rapidly if kept occasional. With a properly planned 3 or 4 day weekend it's pretty safe to assume you aren't risking much with a random drug test.

Undercover cop is a human being.
Human beings can get addicted to drugs/substances.
No doubt some of these undercovers who have to do drugs in order to be undercover, surely some of them are addicts from the job they do. Interesting thread though and some great input.

I've seen a documentary about Jay Dobyn's infiltration of the Hell's Angels. He claimed that as a Federal Agent he was forbidden from using drugs at all during the investigation, and was forced to fake taking them at one point. He claimed a Hell's Angel instructed him to do a line of meth and that he pretended to take the line in such a way as he was able to cup the drugs into his hand. Who knows if this is true; I can't imagine when forced to choose between getting killed & jeopardizing the investigation, and breaking some rule of employment, too many agents would make the former choice.
But if the cops really are gung-ho on staying clean during the course of their investigations, I imagine they rely on confidential informants far more than bona fide UCs. Come to think of it, the people I know who got busted have usually been caught by CI's wearing wires rather than actual officers of the law posing as drug users, but then I don't know any 'big fish' - perhaps it's different in high-level investigations.

LOL, I saw that too and it was obviously bullshit. Of course the dude isn't gunna go on TV and be like "hell yeah I did meth!", he's gunna make up some highly improbable bullshit story about "honoring the code of duty" or whatever shit that will make grandmas sitting at home on the couch feel all warm and toasty inside.

My thoughts exactly.
When i ask random people for shit (not advised obviously, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do) i usually show them i have weed and that i smoke and then they are cool about it. I honestly never knew that actual cops will do drugs to prove they are not undercovers. Interesting!

I saw this as well, and it didn't sound too, too improbable. I mean, he basically just wiped the line off the table but made it look as though cupping his hand around the line and following it while snorting was all just part of his technique. It's not David Blaine slick, but it's slick enough to fool already-intoxicated bikers, I'm sure.

i'm sure though he couldn't have done that every time...cause i'm sure when you run with bikers for months/years you'll be forced to do meth quite a bit...

Yeah, but this particular guy had to be full of shit. He also claimed that he pretended to hit a civilian who insulted him with a whiskey bottle, and the guy just fell down, no blood or anything (bottle wounds can be particularly barbaric, my nephew went to prison for 3 years because he hit a guy in the head with a beer bottle and put him in a coma, all in a stupid drunken fight). He reeked of bullshit. No way you manage to exist in an organization like the Hell's Angels without doing drugs. They aren't all stupid, and people who know drugs know to look for signs that people are on them. If everybody has dilated pupils and this guy doesn't, and manages to get to sleep after six hours while they are partying for 5 days straight, people will notice.
Undercovers are very rare, however. CI's are much more prevalent, they have no limitations on their behavior, and can get away with just about anything short of murder or rape. Judges know these dudes on a first name basis. If you are concerned that a friend of yours might be a CI, go to court with him. If the judge knows him and immediately dismisses a fairly serious case (drug trafficking, illegal firearm possession), he is likely a CI.
The system is so fucking dirty, but you do not have to worry about undercover cops unless you are in a gang, organized crime, or a corner dealer (I highly doubt anybody on this board is serving on corners). CI's will get you. Be wary of the mysterious newcomer to your group if you like to deal. I have heard some horror stories that I do not feel comfortable sharing.

CI got me. Got court for it on the 9th. And i never worried about undercovers but i would know everytime one of my friends would go to jail and their bail and what happened with them.

Can't remember if it was "Never Get Busted" or "Never Get Raided", but the guy that created the DVD was a former Narcotics Interdiction officer. He said it was a myth that undercover officer's are allowed to use drugs.
However, that doesn't keep you safe from cops who believe ends justify the means or are just plain corrupt, and honestly I'm sure the DEA is probably capable of giving official authorization for scheduled substance use to one of their under covers. They're the only law enforcement branch that could get legal internal authorization. Unless for some reason the FDA would need to be involved?

not seen the movie but the last few pages of the book are the most important - when they bust thier main target a video tape of a politician's daughter having sex is uncovered. That is what thier boss was after all along, they were victims.
no idea if the movie covers that.
as for narcs doing drugs - look at how the [ uk ] police infiltrated the enviromentalist activists...
