I'll be flying to Minneapolis, MN for work on the 24th of May. I'll be there for a week. Besides the obvious (go to a Twins game... assuming they're in town that week) what is there to do in Minneapolis? What's the weather like this time of year? I wont be out for much of a night life so to speak, but more or less going out after work 4ish and later. I can have a few beers and what not, but unfortunately, won't have ample time to hit the bars up or anything so not much in the way of chattin up the local talent.

Thanks in advance for suggestions on things to do! :)

Oh and it goes without saying... but any BLers live around there?

If you're into underground hip hop, there's a good store called "Fifth Element" you could check out.

Acme Comedy Club.

One of the best clubs in the country.

And if you get to see either DWIGHT YORK, CHUCK BARTELL, or MAGGIE FARIS, please:

(1) Enjoy the fuck out of their respective brilliance;

(2) Kindly say "hello" on my behalf.

Enjoy!

The downtown is decent for touristy stuff, they have a very nice strip with trolley's and outdoor eating, and such - pretty much what you'd imagine for a brainpower center of the US = clean, nice, etc. Whilst wandering the downtown, you may discover the many, many Peanuts character statues custom painted and left about as a sign of hometown pride (Charles Schultz was there). I've taken several pictures of them, sometimes posing in them, if you are into that kind of thing.

Knowing you like hockey, I would have suggested visiting the MN Wild, but alas with playoffs they are on holiday as well. I'm sure you knew that. Speaking of which, they'd be housed in St. Paul if you cared to visit the arena - will you be with car? Or restricted to MN foot-travel and public transportation? There are a lot of things to do outside of the city limits as well, depending on your ability to drive around, even with minimal spending.

You mention not having time for the bars....the city has a very high population of gays, and without any comment for or against on my part, I'd simply pass this along for your own decision making should you wander about at night and decide to spend any time in a bar - know what you're heading into and if it matches your tastes. I found this out on my second trip to MN on business, when I landed in the middle of the Gay Pride parade and celebration unexpectedly.

There is also several very nice park areas following along the Mississippi river.

Meh, if more comes to mind, I'll come back - I'm about 3 yrs removed from my trips there, and usually I was located about 20 min north of the city :\

Check out the local free magazine (City Pages?) - there might be a music group you like. I mention this because I love music, and I miss the music scene that Minneapolis had. My favorite clubs to go to were `1st Avenue` (Purple Rain, the movie was filmed in/around - it's kid of dive club, but it had a fun crowd many years back), and `The Quest` (not a dive, more trendy but not snooty, great sound system)

Hell fucking yeah. Rhymesayers is based in the twin cities. Also, The Triple Rock is an awesome bar/venue type place to chill, drink, and see some good music. If you like punk MDC will be there on the 28th.

First Avenue is always good. If you like electronic music like drum and bass and dubstep check out the Loft above Barfly. We've got Konkrete Jungle every other Wednesday at First Ave.

Buncha shit - City Pages always has some suggestions.

The Fifth has some good shit if you wanna buy some hip-hop records. I pretty much grew up in that store listening to Doomtree, Atmosphere, Brother Ali and all those guys. :D

Check out Vital Vinyl too, they've got your electronic fix.

^ Awesome input, thanks! I've mentioned, though, unfortunately there won't be much for a night life while I'm there since I'll be there on business and will have to be up eaaaarly in the morning every day I'm there, but if I enjoy MN as much as people keep saying I will, then I'll make note of that because I'll probably be back. :)

I'm pretty sure the Quest closed a few years back, and Epic is in its place now, doing well.

Pharmicist, I might know you, I go to KJ almost every time. Will be cool to meet you in the future.

As far as the more "touristy" things to do, I'd say get a bike and explore the city - there are some great parks, and really, the best way to see the #1 cycling city in USA is by bike. Places to check out:

Sculpture Garden
Minnehaha Falls
Minneapolis Institute of Arts (free!)

Btw our techno parties are awesome as well.

I don't mind reading vita.mn to see what's going on

The Walker Art Museum is a nice modern art museum, lots of people watching can be done there.

Someone already mentioned the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts which has a strong collection.

Spent a few years of my misguided youth/teenage years in Minnesota(Apple Valley...suburban hell, although the city is only twenty minutes--by car--away, but even though the Minneapolis suburbs are as cookie cutter as any, the all have some sort of vibe that is different than Detroit or Chicago's burbs...hard to explain, you'll feel it if you ever visit) living with an aunt/uncle who lost their children at a young age and I guess the family sent me there to help them along...twisted, but oh well, they were nice people. RIP

Hang out around the U of Minn...hit the mall of America...go fishing in one of thousands of lakes...as been mentioned(and not just underground hip-hop, the music scene in general) the indie music scene is amazing, for some reason or another, but check out a campus newspaper or a website devoted to the Minny music scene and enjoy. I never really liked the area until I was old enough to hang out around campus, very interesting setting/scene(mos def one of the coolest "campuses" if you want to call it that, in the country)...cool people/etc...

If you're too old for that? Well, other than outdoor activities up north, the city/state is fairly boring...
