I keep having this annoying tickle in my throat and am coughing a lot, I've never really abused dxm maybe once when I was younger, but I am on daily tramadol. I know tramadol and dxm can cause serotonin syndrome, but is this still a danger with theraputic doses of dxm say 30 mg just to stop coughing? please answer soon because this cough is bugging me and I would like to know whether I can take it or not.
thanks,

B

I am wondering the same thing. I would like to take about 45mg of DXM along with my daily 250mg of Tramadol. Is this relatively safe? I wouldn't think that Serotonin Syndrome would happen from a near-therapeutic dose but correct me if I'm wrong?

To be safe, take the dxm and tramadol at opposite times of day. i.e. one in the morning and the other at night.

with only a small dose of dxm taking at a large interval as mentioned above, you should not have a problem at all.

DXM inhibits the enzymes that break down opiates, even at therapeutic doses, so it might make the effects of Tramadol stronger. In any case, if both are legitimate it should list contraindications on the packaging, and whoever prescribed you the Tramadol should be able to answer this.

but it is not legitimate so there is not someone to answer the question other than Bluelighters, so it is possible to take theraputic doses and not contract serotonin syndrome? and quite possibly could potentiate the tramadol?

If you take only the suggested dosage of 15-30m.g. there is no specific contraindication or interaction noted for DXM/Tramadol in the scope of therapeutic dosages of each. Both are contraindicated with MAOI's and a strong caution on SSRIs. At 30-60m.g. as recommended, you should be fine.

^ Indeed. There is a risk of serotonin syndrome mixing a serotonergic drug with an SNRI but at those doses the risk is low.

This is an old thread so I'm going to close it, but thank you guys for your posts :)
