Thought this would probably be significant to quite a few people here, and couldn't find another thread for it (nor was I sure where it would best be placed).

However, some of you might like to sign this and if you're on facebook become a fan of this page and then invite all your friends who might also be that way inclined.

The Vienna Declaration said:
The Vienna Declaration is a statement seeking to improve community health and safety by calling for the incorporation of scientific evidence into illicit drug policies.
...
This is the official declaration of the XVIII International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2010) to be held in Vienna, Austria from July 18th to 23rd. The declaration was drafted by a team of international experts and initiated by several of the world’s leading HIV and drug policy scientific bodies: the International AIDS Society, the International Centre for Science in Drug Policy (ICSDP), and the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. To read the Declaration click here.

Just a thought, as this is currently still in progress, might it be better placed in DiTM? It also might get slightly higher exposure there which might not be a terrible thing ...

The Vienna declaration

First off, sorry for putting this here, I know it doesn't belong but I have no clue where something like this would go. Perhaps the front page is the best place? Secondly, it links to the nexus where the real link can be found so it can be better explained.

This is the Vienna declaration. It is a petition to get officials to have only science based evidence for drugs when speaking of their effects.

Mods, manipulate this as needed.

Selfless bump. Just got this message on Facebook.

Good evening all,

The Vienna Declaration ( http://www.viennadeclaration.com/ ) is a public policy movement towards international drug policy based around scientific evidence and the principle of harm reduction. It is being spearheaded by several of the world’s leading HIV and drug policy scientific bodies: the International AIDS Society, the International Centre for Science in Drug Policy (ICSDP), and the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS.

It's pretty clear that however much pressure we can put on our politicians in the UK to change direction, there are UN conventions on drug policy that govern the actions of UN member states, so we should all welcome the Vienna Declaration as an attempt to galvanise the international movement for drug policy reform.

In four days the President of the International AIDS Society will be introducing the Vienna Declaration to the world. 5000 people have already signed up their support, but by then we want that number doubled, tripled or quadrupled, at least. The more people add their voice, the louder the call will be. Please follow the link below to sign up now, it will take you less than one minute!

Many thanks!

Go on. Just sign it. What harm could it do?!

It saddens me that the number is so low. To make an impact we need 100,000+ everyone here has an interest in this and should be signing it.

Sign it sign it sign it sign it sign it sign it sign it sign it sign it -now you are feeling a strong urge to sign it- sign it sign it sign it -the urge is irresistible now and you are already clicking the link - signed - done. %)

Like i said in a previous article i posted in regards to aids (which has a reference to the vienna convention) this should be front-page-NOW!

Word, if you are spending your time posting on bluelight you can surely contribute if you want to.

Signing involved filling in a few boxes and then checking one, it was easy as shit.

Cheers guys. This is great progress, and thanks phrozen for putting it on the front page.

Yes, of course I'm as skeptical as anyone else as to whether this will have any direct impact on anyone within the UN, but it's got a lot of weight behind it, and many important people supporting it. If nothing else, it may force them to acknowledge it rather than simply sweeping it under the rug.

Besides, it's rarely one thing which changes attitudes and dogmas (like homosexuality years ago (and even today in some countries) and like drug policy today), it's the conglomeration of many things (the media foremost), and every single thing like this contributes in its own way. Even if just 1 of rant*N*rave's 172 friends finds it, and see's the harm drug prohibition is doing where s/he didn't before, that is progress.

This is super cool. I may not have a bunch of friends to refer it to, but I've signed it. I'll show it to the gf, too. BL has really opened my eyes in terms of REAL harm reduction, hopefully this encourages some of the drug using population out there to be a bit more responsible/ knowledgable about the substances they're putting into their bodies..

This should be made required reading for everyone attempting to log-in...
joking

but actually
