I think it is more a case of 8y of Obama and Progressives have made a portion of the public feel like nobody speaks for them, until Trump arrived. He'd say 3000 things, many of them contradictory, many more of them just don't make sense. But in the flotsam were things people could identify with and get behind, things they hadn't heard anyone speak to in nearly a decade. They'd been in the 'conservative' desert and found water. Might be poison water, but they drank it anyway. After the first term, if their standing by him, it may be they like that flavor of 'water', or at least can tolerate it, in hopes that he can overcome all those against him (and by extension, against those members of public who feel he is trying to do good on their behalf).
