The travel thread

I think the WOOFING would be great. You get to learn all about organic fruit and veg growing, farming, alternative living, in some cases cider and wine making, cheese making etc. It'd be fantastic. You'ld be spending your time outside in the country, fresh air, sunshine, learning lots of new skills and knowledge and embracing a new culture. So you don't get paid, big fuckin deal, it's an experience and something that would definitely be worthwhile.

You wouldn't need any money anyway, you get your accomodation and meals. On your day off you could spend it relaxing or wandering the countryside, swiming in lakes, going on hikes, cycling, enjoying the freshly made cider or whatever.

Sounds like bliss to me! :)

I'd love to go to Cuba if they did it there. I looked at the site again last night and didn't see nearly as many countries participating as you just listed. South America would also be very cool.

I'm seriously considering going away for a couple months to do volunteer work, what an experience it'd be. Better than settling down into a 'real' job in the city.

Oh and Felix most of the farms I've read about they only ask you to work 4-5hrs a day for 5 days a week. Rest of time is free.

Looking at Ecuador:
The farm is located about 120 miles from Quito in the highlands where the farmlands give way to the cloud forest in the foothills of the Andes.

Everything we eat comes from the earth, vegetables, meat, milk etc. We don't use chemical products: we work with organic procedures. We have some cabañas for people to stay in. We also have a bandb house near to the farm with all the accomodations plus a huge garden and beautiful birds who always come and visit us. We have a lot of work like with the chickens, cows, plants, garden, building some cabañas and other stuff. We like people, especially foreigners!

Bio-dynamic flower farm located in the cloud forest region of the Andean Mountains in Ecuador

Must walk 25 minutes to farm, must pass small running creek several times or leap of faith bridge, see web site
We host wwoofers with the intent of teaching the manera antigua, the old ways of farming in Ecuador. We are about living young, no too many rules (2) and play for work is the norm. Work is shared by all and must be FUN. We have 15 hctrs of organic communal farm and frutal, over 60 varieties of fruit, cafe, pineapples and more. Constant need for weeding and harvesting and creating new planting spaces. Need help to maintain good compost. Alternative building projects happening all the time. Plenty of spanish spoken, we will try to teach you. Tina is a local midwife. Lots of organic food, not much meat. Lg overly friendly dogs live with us, outdoors only, as well as cats, horses, goat. Work requirements are flexible. Solar power for music and light only. NO TV. Farm is truly in the forests, secondary lowland, so you may see wild animals, great for birdwatching. Oppurtunities for community service, ie help building communal structures, assist in local high school to help with english pronunciation (great way to learn more spanish), lots of contact with local pueblos. Peace!

Sounds good to me. :)

Farming isn't my thing, I'd rather go on building project where you build schools and stuff.. but not in Africa, somewhere in a forest in remote villages where everything is built from local wood etc, eco style

Lets be a couple of WWOOFERS Kara. ;)

I'm seriously considering this, got a whole list of volunteer websites to browse, might see what I can find and do something. It'll be exciting.

School building would be cool as well but I just like the idea of working on a farm which is self sufficient on it's own produce, lots of lovely fruit and vegetables, and fresh meat. It'd be great.

I'm pretty shit at it, I can pinpoint the countries most of the time but never have a clue exactly where the capital cities are and I'm gash at the flag game.

Emirates Palace hotel is meant to be shite.

Just got back from Dubai a few hours ago....was fucking hot this time! 45 degrees most day.

Enjoy yourself?

Can it really be a shit hotel, isn't it 7 star or something?

Was a good trip but was either spent working on being majorly hungover. And 45 is too hot do anything. Had a great all day party on Friday though!

Emirates Palace is just absolutely massive and has no soul. Build quality aint great and as its too big its too big to manage properly.

There's a good travel game at freerice.com and whule playing it you're helping donate rice to the poor, play there instead. ;)

I thought I would be smart and book two cheap ryanair flights instead of the direct service so I could fit an extra day in budapest for my trip as there are no direct services on a monday to glasgow.. Turns out it was only like £30 cheaper and an extra 6 hours of my life down the drain in transit.. FUCKING!
