can anyone help me find cheap flights? I'm a bit of a div when it comes to searching the net, sta travel is the cheapest i've found so far but I'm sure there must be cheaper.
from anywhere in uk (pref newcastle but ne where if its cheap) to New York.
Going about 28th august coming back about 28th November.

You might find it cheaper changing the return date to midweek rather than friday.

London:

Delta will do 28-28 for £309, Air France is £310

If you change the date to the 26th (wed) the price drops to £294 Delta/France, £310 Virgin, £318 BA.

Manchester:

28/28 £329 Air France
28/26 is £324 Air France

Birmingham:

28/28 £361 United
28/26 £346 United

Newcastle:
28/28 £400 Air France

Glasgow
28/28 £417 BA

Not that expensive to fly to New York, that's good to know.

Nice site as well, didn't know that one before. :)

The mate I'm doing Europe with is being a bit of a mong. He's in Corfu at the moment working, in a couple days he goes to Malta for a week to see his ex-missus (which is strange as the reason he went away for the summer was to get away from the nutter) before heading to Rome to kick start our adventures. Now he's insistent that flights are too expensive and he's getting a ferry.

I just did a bit of checking, flight can be got for £88 on the day he wants to fly. The ferry (not sure of the cost) goes to Sicily then he'd need to train it to Rome which costs £68 alone. Now I'm sure the ferry costs more than £20 and it's a whole load more hassle as well considering he'd be spending 12hrs on a train afterwards. He doesn't seem to be able to comprehend any of this and is adament he's getting the ferry as it's cheaper than a flight.

His phone doesn't accept calls abroad so we have to communicate via text which is useless and costing me a fortune! I didn't get charged for any calls to / from HK, Oz or Indonesia yet a text to Corfu costs an arm and a leg! :\

srsly,

those package charity tours
ARE RIPPING PEOPLE OFF,
IN THE NAME OF CHARITY.

I know this, because I could also fly out to those places,
live there for the same amount of time,
doing the exact same volunteer work,
and pay 10-20% of the price of the package charity tour scams.

I'd add opodo to that list, it finds alot of connections that skyscanner and co dont find

It depends entirely how the charity work is funded. I'm not expecting a fuckwit like you to actually be able to understand, but charitable organisations rely on finance to drive their projects. Hell, even some of them have employees who get paid.

Some friends of mine worked on a three months project developing eco-tourism in Belize and had to cough up £6k each. For this the money provided them with accommodation, food and also helped to pay for building materials, equipment, etc in order to sort out the buildings. Even the basic teaching organisations in SE Asia ask for donations when you are out there on top of your help.

Charity is expensive.

Wo wo wo easy

Bit out of line, and Spade was talking about following on the forum, the fashionable thing to take the piss out of him %) Not to outright insult someone

Anyway, Spade has explained why those companies that charge a fortune are a con

My dad is going to do a conservation thing in Madagascar, its this water charity that recruit plumbers having their mid-life crisis and anyone to go out there and construct sewage systems and give them running water etc.. He was going to pay about £3000.. but I told him to look and you only have to pay for your flights and make a small donation if you cut out the middle man

It's not a con. They're definitely not up my street but that doesn't mean they're a con.

If I was 17 and wanted to goto Africa my parents probably would have insisted I do it through a more organised body like real gap and, like most gap year students I imagine, they'd front the cash knowing it was probably a better organised, safer trip.

I agree though it is expensive and definitely not up my street.. If you're interested in teaching you don't even need to find a charity - just head to where kids hang out / local schools and you generally get welcomed with open arms. :)

I beleive that Real Gap is a con. They don't actually organise anything for you, you'll find that the charities / projects themselves will sort out everything that needs sorting and make sure you're safe etc. Real Gap have just made themselves middlemen in order to take a cut of the profit. As I said before all Real Gap offer is a 24hr hotline you can call back home if need be.

It's not a con. Expensive yes, but not a con. People are aware what they're paying for, there is no trickery involved, it's not a con.

It is a con because people are NOT aware that they can do the same project / volunteer work for a much lesser price if they contact the charity / project themselves or use one of the other non profit making websites who do the same sort of thing as Real Gap.

Real Gap aren't offering any sort of service that is actually worth the sums of money they expect people to pay. They don't actually provide anything, bar the 24hr phone line, it's the charities / projects that provide everything anyway. You just need to go on one of the many websites that list free projects / voluntary work and you'll see all the charities offer the airport pickups, meals, accommodation etc anyway. Real Gap is doing fuck all apart from counting huge bundles of cash they make out of unwitting would be volunteers. They just let people believe that the only way to do volunteer work abroad is through them when it's not.

It would be interesting to see what profit Realgap make. Surely a real charity driven organisation would then donate all profit to charity themselves?

Reap Gap do donate some money to charity but they are not a charity themselves and seem to be set up in order to extract hard earned cash from people looking to do a gap year / volunteer work but who aren't aware that if you just look a little bit harder it can be done for free or at a fraction of the cost.

Definitely. I bet the money comes rolling in. Nice work if you can get it. :)

I will fly to Singapore first though and spend a week there before taking the sleeper train up to Thailand where I might spend a day or two.

A week is a long time in Singapore, especially as it isn't the cheapest city in the world. I'd defo spend longer in Thailand and less time in Singapore.

I've never been to Singapore but Thailand is definitely worth more than a day or two.

I was in Singapore in Jan for 4 nights. Very nice and clean, and got a good drinking strip by a lagoon, but nothing like as much fun as Bangkok, Chaing Mai or Chaing Rai.

i went to thailand, but all i did was wait in bangkok airport for 4 hours waiting for my flight to heathrow. (en route from sydney). i wasn't allowed out. :|

why the fuck i never actually spent a couple of nights there, i'll never know.
