The Travel Thread - Second Destination

Have fun Kara! Perhaps I'll run into him somewhere along the way:D

I just bought a pair of Teva Terra sandals. Ugly bastards, but look like just the business for mud and flood.

I'm flying to Bangkok, on to Cambodia (Siam Reap) and staying thereabouts for up to a week before heading on to Saigon by road/river and spending the next week around the southern half of Vietnam before going to Laos for a week, or more.

I'm officially supposed to come back to the UK on the 2nd of next month but . . .

Can't remember looking forward to something as much recently!

Edit: Any names better than others when it comes to travel insurance? I never had any.

I took the gap year supreme with flexicover. Normal travel insurance jumps over £140 for more than 3 weeks which is stupid. Got that, 3 months for £74.

Don't know if its good as I didn't have to use it, but they wouldn't help me when I missed my flight home and was stuck in BKK.

I'm booking my flight to Aus this week! Need travel insurance too which will cover a year or longer??

The ride there was nothing short of hilarious; looking out the window there were hordes of motorcyclists carrying all sorts of bizarre loads.

Ha ha! So true. I saw one bike with 3 folk on it and a full size door balancing on the back :D

Crossing a street is an art form and only for the brave. It involves plucking up the courage to step out into the traffic and to keep moving. The unwritten rule of Vietnamese roads is that the traffic assumes you’ll keep moving so plans to go behind you. It kind of works too! Until you get scared and stop and get hit by traffic.

Again so true. Mental. :D

also got offered my first go with a prostitute here. A guy came up to me and said “You want massage, maybe with a little extra on the side” *wink wink*. Now, normally in such a situation I would have handed over the contents of my wallet straight away

Sucky sucky!

I'm not posting my blog on Bluelight.

How come? :(

Nice read Kara, sounds great so far. :D

I'm rather jealous!

Me too!

I've started to think maybe I should go to Asia instead of Aus, my cash would last much longer there. :\

Nice one Kara, good read.... that brings back memories (although I never taped benzos to my balls hahaha, just reminded me though, I left some xanax in a hotel room for the next lucky person to indulge in if they felt like it), shall be cool to see some pics.

Internet was so cheap in Asia I actually managed to piss around maybe a bit much online, ah well! :D

4000 VND an hour is a bargain and its pretty fast, especially compared to Thailand and Laos.

One tip: always keep your hotel's business card on you. Its easy to get lost and show that to a motorcycle taxi and he'll take you for 10k.

They're early starters in 'Nam. At 5am you'll see people setting up for 6am open. Probably because of the midnight curfew in Hanoi, which only means clubs and bars need to be closed by then.. if they can't afford the bribe.

Boom boom offers from a taxi driver are bound to go wrong.

I wasn't in Hanoi, just Hoi Chi Minh but I don't recall places closing so early.

Just shout the word louder in English whilst showing your distain that the foreigner doesn't understand what your saying. Some hand gestures should work too. ;)

Just about to book my flight to Aus, can't decide whether I want an evening take off flight (where I won't be able to sleep anyway - never can) or a daytime take off.

My thinking is that if I'm flying at night I'll be knackered by the time the flight kicks off, won't sleep and be even more exhausted half way through the flight let alone by the time I get there so if I chose the morning flight, I would have to get up earlier (could force a very early night using benzos the night before to knock me out) but wouldn't be starting off the flight tired. Might make it a bit more bareable.

Any opinions?

If you really can't get to sleep at all on a plane then get as much sleep as you can beforehand, get the morning flight. Either way you're going to feel like shit when you get there :D

And get yourself some valium :)

I doubt I'll have any valium, unless the doc prescribes them because I'm not smuggling them through customs.

Aye defo going to be feel like shit, exhausted and jetlagged. :(

You don´t have to get up for a few days, right? You can take time to get over the jet lag? If so, donº´t worry about it, just go whenever.

What worked for me, though: get yourself onto local time at your destination as soon as possible. For me, that meant staying up all night as I flew to LA, then staying up for a few hours out of LA. By the time I went to sleep, it was 9 or 10pm in NZ. It worked pretty well, I was able to get up and function the next two days.

Oh, and you could try valerian root for sleeping.

Right now I´m in Portugal with the lady. Today was meant to be our day of no sightseeing, sitting at the beach. It´s the one day of our trip that´s rained solidly :D Good times, though.
