The Travel Thread - I am lovely and respectful to all in my path PLUR <3 xxxxx

looks like you managed to post it 4 times successfully, lol. Would get in contact with the embassy to see what the chances of you getting a visa though before you book tickets and hope for the best.

outlook = grim, from what i can gather my best choice is to blag the visa waiver form and do a connecting flight through Dublin who have a American embassy at the airport and if you get through there you get into America, the advantage being a shorter journey back to England if it goes tits up.

seems a bit risky.

DREAM CRUSHED!!

whilst on the subject of the states and convoluted ways of getting there....

anyone got any guesses as to what happens if you want to go to cuba directly afterwards? i've heard of people being refused entry for having cuban stamps on their passports. i really wanna go to cuba while fidels there, he's barely 'there' as it is so tme is ticking and my (probably) only chance would be on my way home from the states next year. i want to play it uber safe though as i'll have saved up for over a year for this trip.

If it's on the way home from the states you're not gonna have any trouble then are you, it's only the Yanks who give a fuck about that, the Cubans aren't gonna stop you coming in. I wouldn't have thought that the Yanks could even refuse a Brit who happens to have been to Cuba before either...thought it is the Americans. :\

they can refuse you for anything, without stating a reason. or keep you in for 6 hours of questioning 2 visits in a row, thus diminishing your likelihood of returning. so can we. i know they're mostly concerned about whether you'll leave but no one told them the communist threat died down a few years back....

You're not gonna get locked up for having visited Cuba. If you've already been to the states and your on your way home, what difference would it make anyway? You can't get denied entry when you've already left. And if you do have to go back to America to go home and they refuse, they'll just have to deport you back home anyway. Win, win situation!

its about being perceived as 'anti american' at immigration, as that certainly is grounds for them to refuse entry. they can and do regularly refuse people for seemingly arbitrary reasons, we are the same we just never realise it cos we're british. as i'd go to the states first, being refused entry would stop my trip before it started.

because to prove i'm going to leave they may want to see my ticket out, which would be to cuba. they ask an awful lot of questions so they would know.

ahh, I understand now. From my past experience they don't normally ask to see a ticket out, they never have for me anyway, they just ask how long your duration of stay is, and they ask for the address that you will be at during your stay.

You could always turn up with an I <3 New York Jumper on or something, might convince them you are not anti-american. 8)

You should probably contact the US Embassy and find out if they do have any problems with people going to cuba after the states. Actually it is probably better to contact the US Customs and Border Protection as they are actually their own organisation separate from the US Government, they should be able to answer any of your questions about your fears about Cuba.

There are ways for even Americans to go to Cuba these days, I know Yanks who have been on the sly.

Watson, if you're travelling to the States you need to apply for authorisation before you travel (called the ESTA). So you could do that before you buy your ticket...

Chinup: You could ask the US Customs and Border Agency. This FAQ seems to indicate that non-US residents can travel from the US to Cuba (but can't bring any goods into the US from Cuba).

some lovely (horrible!) vodka to take the pain awaay from my life, oh well i got plenty of vals to deal with a hangover :D

Burnt to fuck and been hiding from the sun all day, so i thought id spent a bit of time on BL. Cant say ive been missing it too much if im honest.

Enjoyed

Crawling through the Cu Chi tunnels
Singing the house of the rising sun with a german and norwegian in some karaoke bar
Angkor wat and angkor thom
Killing fields and s21 prison *not enjoyed, but was of interest*
Fired an ak47
Me my pal in bangkok and went out for 2 nights wrecked- asked a tuk tuk to take us to Patpong only for him to take us to som shady den. We refused to go and he started smashing up his own tuk tuk. wat a cunt !
Hired a quad bike and travelled over Kho Tao
Went snorklling in Koh Tao
Arrived in Koh Panghan today and went to the north eastern shore- really quiet and secluded here and no full moon party dafties (i am going but couldnt stand another day of listening to another pipa and her rad nights out)

Disliked

15 hour bus journey to Saigon
French cunts singing for half the above jounrey
Finding a needle on the beach in Sianoukville
Cunts trying to scam you with the most unbelievable stories
Cunts with no imagination all wearing the same t-shirt "same same" then on the back "but different"
Gap Yeaaa cunts
One guy who approached me last night and gve me the folllowing patter,,,
"you want to come to lotus bar for a free shot (i dont drink shots), last night was soo soo mental- we done the centurion challenge and 3 people were sick on the stage and i was dancing on it later" he looked at me for some kind of approval then continus with his sales line,,, "I hope more people are sick tonight"

Chu Chi tunnels are cool, is that where you fired the guns or in Cambodia? Angkor Temples are an incredible sight eh? I liked Thom the most those Buddha face sculptures are incredible. About 99% of the tuk tuk drivers are pished out their faces or on yaba, they can be a bit mental at times like.

Where was the 15hr bus journey from? I went from Nha Trang to Saigonwhich is a cool place but think that wasn't so long a journey so guessing you missed it. Impressions on Sihanoukville? I really liked that place.

What scams you encountering? I didn't experience any of that as far as I remember.

The temples at Angkor are incredible. I got sick of the sight of temples by the time i reached cambodia, but It would be difficult to pass off angkor as just another temple.

The 15 hour journey was from Sihanoukville to Saigon overnight. There is no way it should have taken that long, but having to stop at phnom penh and change over to another bus stopping at border points etc etc ended up in a 15 hour journey- fuckin horrific to be honest, especially after the comfort of flying earlier in my trip.

I had originally intended to travel from Saigon back to Bangkok by bus, but decided i was going to spend the cash and book a flight. Well worth the money IMO.

I wasnt impressed by Sihanoukville; infact its the place i least enjoyed during this trip. For me there is a fine line between something with a special charm and a shithole- and id have to say it was a bit of a shithole. The bars crawling with idiots, tacky as fuck looking sheds selling watered down drink, and the food was rotten in most places. Also each day id get surrounded by kids/ladmine victims asking for money. When i explained i would rather give to a legitimate charity they just laughed and fucked off. Finding a needle on the beach also put me off big time.

As for scams,,,,

I was walking the river front area in Phnom Penh when this cunt approaches me and tells me he is trying to impress his girlfriend by raising funds for an orphanage in cambodia. He then goes on ,,, you understand sometimes you must try to impress your girlfriend. Thinking im some fuckwit who is going to fall for his story cause im there with my g/f. He then produces this book and asks me to write a message to the children and make a donation to him. I made it clear he was getting fuck all.

He approaches me the next night and tells me he's an american stuck in cambodia and needs 30 dollars from me to get a new passport. Poor kids in the orphanage are fucked if he ends up in America;)

Also another cunt in Sihanoukville being escorted around singing and pretending to be blind. Guy at the bar told me he watches him climb on a motorbike and ride away everyday.

I struggle to believe that these scams actually work on anyone atall. But it must if they are trying it night after night.

Feel as though ive kinda burnt out with the number of places ive been in 4 weeks. Exactly why ive checked in to this hotel in the north east of koh phangan where there are no full moon party goons talking about how rad someone is for being sick.

Its <3

Ha ha you lightweight, 15hrs is nothing at all. Bosh some valium and it's a breeze! It's called 'travelling' for a reason. ;)

Shithole? Hmmm don't agree. It has nice beaches & gorgeous nearbye islands though I suppose the main town isn't all that great (but hardly horrible either compared to Siagon or somewhere) and you could find the main street where all the accomodation, bars etc a bit tacky but I liked it for its convenience. The food was good in Sinhanoukville, loads of restaurants doing reasonably priced food both Western and Khymer and the all you can eat beach BBQ places were good too. Had some really good Cambodian dishes down there like chicken luk lak, amok, black pepper beef. I never once saw any landmine victions or get hassled by kids or anyone nor would I have any problem giving a kid with a leg blown off by a landmine a few dollars, why were you so reluctant to give a poor fucker with one leg some money? :\

I think I know exactly the boy you're talking about, he's a backpacker turned smackhead who's ended up stuck in Cambodia and goes around scrounging cash off other travellers to get his next fix.

None of these I would really consider scams, it's just poor people begging because they need money.
