The Theater Experience. What annoys you?

People who do not immediately take their children out of the cinema when they start crying.

Yes we have all paid the same price to see the film and we should be able to make ourselves comfortable however it should not be at the expense of others.

I understand how one could interpret my comments as "racism" however my beautiful black girlfriend would prolly disagree with you and since this is not the forum for such a discussion lets just leave it at that.

Don't be freaked out by it. I worked at a theater a few years ago where we pre-popped all our popcorn for the week and stored it in big bags. In the two years I was at that theater, I only got ONE... I repeat ONE complaint about our popcorn being stale.

The theater I am currently at, we pop our popcorn fresh, right behind the stand, every 5 to 30 minutes, depending on how busy we are. There are times when the popcorn comes right out of the kettle and into the bag, never even touching the bottom of the popper, and we still get dozens of complaints that it is stale, cold or "kernely".

You see, if you store popcorn at room temperature in a properly sealed bag, it will last for quite a long time. Warm that popcorn up and you won't be able to tell it was made DAYS prior.

In regards to bringing in your own snacks to a theater: Would you smuggle in your own drinks at a bar?

I expect to pay a higher price for snacks at a theatre because, frankly, that's just the way it goes. I know, that when I go to a movie with a friend, I can expect to pay between $20 - $30. The people behind the counter selling the consessions don't make the prices, they only work there.

With that being said, I still love the movies. The smell, the big quality sound, the excitement of new releases, and the general atmosphere.
 
You're still not answering the question. At a bar there is a ton of selection, and I doubt a bar I will go to will not have my favorite beer.

There is no movie theatre that carries my favorite snack.
 
Tickets here are 9.50 for nighttime.

Its RIDICULOUS. I spent less AT a bar!
 
High prices--~$7.50-$8.00 here. Christ, I remember when matinees were $3.25, and dollar movies were really a dollar...

Bad focus. Unfortunately, this seems to be a problem only at the dollar movies, but it happens *all* the time.

Food's way too expensive. This is why you have to smuggle shit in. ;)

^^^^^ Off topic this happens to me all the time, but i guess thats what i get for being a beer snob. %)

On topic. i don't mind the prices of tickets or consession stand stuff, I consider it all part of the experince. When I go to a theater I'm actually not looking for the best possible experince in just watcing. IE i don't want to be there in a compltely silent theater, I want to be with a group of people that are reacting to what they are seeing, so I don't mind the laughing. the low key chatting. However kids crying, and talking exseive loud do piss me off.
 
I don't mind the laughing and chatter if thats what the movie calls for, a cheap low borw comedy, but if I'm watching something a bit more serious, the passion, monster, and so on, serious movies, please be quiet and take the movie in quietly, my last complaint I made during a movie was for Texas Chainsaw Massacre, This lady brought her 3 year old child into the movies. and he was crying before the lights even went down. She didn't care that he was crying though she was just you'll be alright. call me crazy I'm not one to judge I'm not saying don't bring your kid to a movie like that BUT if your kid scares easy WHY IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS HOLY bring him to a scary movie espically one thats gonna be kinda gory and somewhat sick and disturbing and be shocked when he starts crying cause he is scared. the prices. 7:50 for a movie WOW ok thats not that bad. I know some places that are 10 to 12 bucks a ticket. and for the crowds like already said, try a tuesday night, the theaters are next to empty.
 
Something that happens to me every once in a while that really pisses me off is people in theateres who complain about everything. I've noticed people talking really quietly every once in a while and then someone goes out and complains, and some security guys comes in and yells about it. I don't remember what movie it was that I was seeing, but there were these three people sitting about 4 seats away and 2 rows in front of my friend and me. There was a couple other people sitting up towards the front and we were all the way in the back. There was only maybe 20 people in the whole theater, and the people in the front complained 3 times about the people in front of us talking, and I could barely even hear them from less than 10 feet away. If people are talking excessively, go ahead and complain, but if not just save the whole audience the trouble of having security come in and disrupt the movie even more.
 
I will never feel guilty about bringing my own food to the theatre. I cannot afford the theatre's food. If I did not bring my own, I would still not buy the theatre's food. Therefore, how is me bringing my own food hurting the theatre?
 
Ever since I got that "on demand" feature on with my digital cable I really am not having any desires to go to the cinema or even rent a flick.

A theatre is like any other business, they need to make money like everyone else.....

Here in Australia (and most countries I think?) subliminal advertising is illegal, but I swear they still do it.... I get cravings for popcorn (which I don't really even like) by the start (or very soon into) the movie.....
 
People kicking the back of your seats and the REDICULOUS movie prices and concession stand prices. Its like 8 - 9 bucks to get in and on top of that for three waters it is 9 dollars. I can easily spent 20 dollars to see a movie. But what else annoys me is people talking during the movie.
 
Actually, I just got back from an interview from the theater and a mentally handicapped man went crazy and started throwing things, spitting on people and hitting people.
 
I bring my own food in whenever I can. I once even went as far as sneaking in a whole pizza and a big bottle of soda. *lol*

I don't get it...if it is so expensive to run a theater how come there is a theater in my town that shows movie for 50 cents to a dollar a picture? The movies arrive there as soon as they leave the other theater, so they are still relatively new movies. The concession stand costs the same as the other theaters. I'm just curious as to how they can get away with that, because it seems like they make NO money.
As for going to the movies, there is nothing worse than loud people...I always threaten them and tell them to shut up. They usually do.

and i think its ok to bring food. after paying close to $20 for two tickets, its bullshit to pay another $15 for 2 large sodas and 2 popcorns. i can bring a $1.25 20oz soda and a $2.00 bag of candy from the gas station. $5.00 for a candy bar? your smoking some funny shit when ya make them prices!!!

By the time a movie gets to a second run theater, the studios have squeezed every dime they want out of it, and the theater only has to pay very small prices to keep the prints. When you average it out, second run theaters are actualy much more profitable than first run theaters, since many of them still charge the high concession prices.

The one thing I'll say about the whole food thing. Sometimes I buy it and sometimes I don't. It's nice to have some fresh popcorn with a movie, but if I don't have the cash to buy it, then I'll take a drink in with me or something. I'm not sure what its like in the US though, but the food over here is very expensive, but you get TONS OF IT! I generally eat/drink half of what I buy. I'd like to be able to buy half as much for half the price please :) Then, I guess the profit margins wouldn't be as much.

Lingo, your point about people paying just as much at amusement parks and sports games and no-one complaining.... I do :) (not to the staff that have nothing to do with it though, I just grumble to my friends and wait for threads like this to start)

I think its rubbish that the movie studios force the people selling their products for them to end up as overpriced hotdog stands just to survive. Is there nothing that can be done about it?

Also, if old reels are so cheap, how come more classic movies don't get shown? Surely some of the independent, small release films could be shown really cheaply on a smaller screen a bit more regularly?

Heheh, gotta love these threads which are based on everyone having a good moan eh? Think I will just add... I LOVE THE MOVIES :D

Oh and the person that was talking about subliminal advertising making you want popcorn... I think they pump the smell of popcorn into the room during the adverts/trailers to make you want it. Sneeky!
