For the persistent heart that beats, you know that you are well

For every ceaseless breath that enters, you know that you can live

But for the pain that never relents, you wonder how long you can survive

The room has been silent. It has been silent for too long.
Knock once, knock twice.. knock again.
You stand outside impatiently mumbling about how screwed up her sleeping habit is.
"Wake up! I need to get something from your room!"
No answer.

You head for the drawers to look for a spare key.
You open the door and you hear nothing but the air conditioner whirring away.
You see her still tucked snugly in bed.
You draw open the curtains to force sunlight into the room.
You start searching through the closet for that christmas gift you hid from your son.
"I'm going out later. Do you need me to pack lunch for you?"
No answer.
You walk towards to bed and pull away the blanket.

From what seemed like only a second after you made the call, the paramedics arrive.
Everything becomes a blur and you don't really believe it's happening.

"She passed away sometime during the night."
"We think it's a case of overdose."
"We're very sorry."
"Would you like to see her before we take her away?"
"No."

It was the last time you stepped inside since.

It's been almost three months.
It's been three months too long..
the grief, the shock and the anger has become part of you
You could've done something.
You could've done anything so this wouldn't be.
No, you chose to stay silent.

and silent it will remain.

You keep the letter you found under her pillow between the pages of your Bible.
It will not comfort you.

In an envelope marked "To Anybody", her last letter writes:

"I wasn't trying to kill myself.
I tried every way I could find.
I ran out of options.
It was the only way i knew that would work.
I'm sorry.
I was only trying to kill the pain."

Often the cries of those in need are silenced.
Their anguish disregarded as minute problems.
Their honesty dismissed as empty words.

The only way to stay alive now, is to convince yourself that you can die later.
