Or hell. I went to a pharmacology conference with my wife because it was in Hawaii and next to the beach.

Many of the presentations looked interesting and I got checked in by acting like I belonged and getting registered for free. Being a white guy is nice in that respect.

I understood the fundamentals of the two of six presentations I went to. The discussion and questions went over my head. I asked a question in the first one and was given an answer that could have been understood by a toddler. It was so belittling. There have been times when I was embarrassed because I didn’t know something or felt out of my depth. That guy made me feel so fucking small and stupid. Happy ending to the whole thing though.

Afterwards, someone came up to me and asked what my degree was in. When I said Communication Studies focused on rhetoric and organizational communication he nodded and glanced around. Then said “That guy (question dick) is an asshole. What are you doing here?” I told him and he chuckled telling me “If I could go to the beach instead of this shit, I’d be at the beach. Half of my department is at this thing. Leaving wouldn’t go unnoticed. If you and your wife would like to get a drink later my wife would probably love meeting you two. You should go outside and enjoy the week on the island.”

I did that and we got dinner as a couple later that night. His wife held a PsyD and had encountered science the jerk from before.

I do too. I love learning. It’s why I got fake credentials for a conference with a registration fee that was more than $1000. From the other conferences in my wife’s field I’ve gone to this one was the exception for sure.
