I've always had the theory that "losing the magic", while receptor downregulation or some such college talk probably plays a role, is actually the psychological experience of becoming familiar with the experience, like overlistening to a really awesome song. From that approach, the longer the break the better, because you have more time to "forget" all the great little facets of the experience.
Agreed. I only roll a few times a year now, and when I do, I am always reminded of how great it is. The afterglow is nice and I find myself basking in how great it was for a little bit, but it slowly starts to fade with time and I find that after a few months I've almost forgotten what it feels like, and stopped thinking about it. Then, when I roll again I have the "oh yeah.... this is what it's like" feelings. I personally feel best when I've waited until I've forgotten the feeling for a while.
