Version 1 of this thread is 2 posts away from 500, so here is version 2.

Here is version one, there is some good information there from what I read of the last few pages. (It was started in 2002)

Who has quit a smoking habit? How did you go about quitting?
Who wants to quit and needs some advice?

I have seriously been thinking about it for a few weeks now. I have been getting quite fit from swimming training and eating really heathily, and quitting is on the list to go.

I rang the Quitline and my Quitpack arrived in the mail yesterday, and I have ordered Allan Carrs "easy way to quit smoking" (This book I believe was mentioned quite a bit in Ver 1 of this thread) I have quit before a few years ago for about 6 months and it wasnt that hard, even cold turkey. But this time it is already a bit stressful.

Good luck to you mate.

Its well worth it both from a health point of view and also from a wallet point of viewe and you can buy heaps of cool stuff with the savings.

I was given a stop smoking pill by the doc but it also screwed with my sleep so i stoppedf using after a week.

In the end I just went cold turkey pretty much and had no problems.

I planned mentally for quite a few months so it wasnt a sudden decision and once deciding to stop almost every smoke after that helped to reinforce it.

I have now been clean for almost9 months.

I had one smoke about a month ago and only had 3 puffs it was so god damn aweful.

I still get cravings from time to time but not that bad.

Prepare for it and be determined.

Treat it as a game, a game that will see you tested often................are you up to it or are you a piss weak bastard.

I kept asking myself this question and it helped me to be striong and determined.

You can do it mate.

first up, good luck there Klue.. i have a hatred of two drugs in piticular,(although i indulge in both). nicotene and alchahol. i have smoked for years and strive to rid myself of the filthy little tar makin mufukn things. Thats No.1 thing i wanna get off, alchohol consumption for me has lessend substantualy due to the medications im on, but those fkn ciggas... tried the gum, tried the patch, tried cold turkey, i fear my will power is lackin somewhat.. havnt tried that ziban yet, may b the next step:)

I'm in the planning phase of quitting too, my bank balance cries every time i buy a pack. :( I also hate feeling beholden to something - i don't smoke week, am a very occasional drinker, and have no other drug vices, and it SHITS me that i smoke.

:\

This might sound simplistic - however if you want to stop - do it - you do not smoke - end of!

Worked for me after 20 years - no guarantee it'll work for yous tho - but it seems pretty straightforward to me.

Good luck & have fun breathing all that lovely oxygen/nitrogen mixture - it's delicious!

exactly what i did. i just threw them away one day and never looked back. though im guilty of relapse as i tend to have a smoke or two when im drinking or other activities

There is a new anti smoking drug called Chantix (Varenicline) that has been on the market in Australia since January or so. There has been a fair bit of negative feedback about suicidal thought and depression being a major side effect. Hrmm not sure if I want that.
There is a thread in Other Drugs that I might bump to see if there are any more people who have taken it.

The good thing about this time is that I want to give up. Well, at least, I have never really been this serious about giving up before.

No. Why? Because in the initial stages, it is less stressful quitting knowing that you have cigarettes on hand. Its a major psychological barrier that you have to overcome.

Also, you cant just give up on the spot. You have to set a date to do it and try your hardest to stick to that date. And if you dont stick to it, no big deal, its not meant to be easy. Seems like you think its an easy thing to give up a 25 a day habit leftwing.

damn fucking straight it is, i did it. why cant you?

i had an epiphany one day, threw out my smokes and refused to smoke from then. sure i relapse from time to time, but im not going through a pack a day anymore, more like a pack every 6 months bar the times i know im going to want to have smokes on hand which is very rare.

setting a date is only going to make you keep putting that date off just that little bit more each time you set it. i know because ive tried and failed with that method personally and have seen other people go through the same thing.

go and have a fag, fag.:D

I've quit weed. Was smoking it with tobacco through a bong so I guess that counts for the purposes of this thread. Don't get gum, don't see a doctor, don't bother with Quitline. Just stop. If you really, really want to, you will. :) Good luck.

Good luck to those who want to quit permanently. I still enjoy a cig every now and again.

i came off a bit raw in my last post klue, but you know i was fuckn round with ya;)

but best of luck to you and anyone else whos trying to quit.

quitting is easier said than done but the positives surely outweigh the negatives. you'll definitely notice an increase in stamina when you're in the pool

Ive successfully stopped smoking and become a "social smoker" - blanket rule - i only smoke when im drinking and out. (Eg:wont smoke if im drinking at home) After 6 years of smoking fill time since high school, like at least 6-8 a day i feel like ive finally beaten my smoking demons as i dont feel the need to smoke when im at work, in my car or anytime basically during the week, which is a massive achievement for me.

I think eventually i will quit when im drinking too, but for now im still happy to have a couple of fags while im out drinking with my mates, but i think eventually ill quit altogether.

I dont actually recommend this path to anyone though, i tried to become a social smoker many many times and fell back into the habit of smoking during the week but im so glad ive at least passed one rock in teh road!! Hurrah!

Mate I have quit cold turkey by just waking up one day and said...............thats it.................it is possible but it really depends on you mate.

Like I said above, this time arround i worked towards it for a while..............I was on 50 a day............I set my date and slowly cut bak over the few weeks leading up and i ended up stopping completely a couple days earlier.

Let me tell you that after a week or so if you go anywhere near a smoker you will hate it..............the smell is off the planet revolting.

majour drawback for me as the main reason i have ciggerettes around is for the spin, i love weed but hate smoking it is where im goin i think... unfourtunatly the laws in this state make it impossible for me 2 cultivate my own and have enough to make loads of resin butter 4 all the cakes and cookies you could dream of...all i have to do is move about 500 miles away 2 south oz, and thats the day i would rid myself of every cigerette and pipe with no hesitation or hassle:)

Yup me too 14 years not smoking now - love that air stuff so much aaaah the smell of flowers the taste of subtle foods I could go on & on & on.

Yeah if you wanna quit just stop - it's not heroin or benzos you know.

x2. its kind of embarrassing the amount of mischief we've gotten ourselves into over the yearly period. i could count on my thumbs the amount of big nights we've had in the previous 12 months; but cigarettes, fuck me. we could have paid 8% of our mortgage in that period on our cigarette bill alone. its tragic. both vitaminz and i are smokers; and heavy ones at that. its our last vice that we'd be more than happy to see the ass end of.

in saying that; im sitting outdoors, having a fag as typing 8)
