Haven't had or been to a BBQ in ages. Prob won't make it to one either, by the time I'm back from Europe the summer will be gone. :(

^ cat was too close for the camera to focus

^ absolutely brilliant! do you remember if that was on portrait mode?

the carpet one could have done with the flash on, and the last cat one as well probably. you might have got away with it if you'd followed my next top tip:

KEEP THE CAMERA STILL!

hold it with both hands, with your arms against your body.

or

press it up against something solid, like a wall, a tree, a lamp post, or even sit it on top of a bottle. this goes x 100 in low light conditions and/or if not using the flash.

I'm not sure what feature it was on as I just change it all the time to see what comes out. It might have just been on auto mode with macro on but I'm not 100% sure.

I'm trying to jog my memory by going through the camera, I can't even see portrait mode for some reason? Jog my memory please.

I struggle to keep the camera still, shaky hands, I need to remind myself to hold it against my body but when taking pics of the cat it's hard to get in the right position as it never sits still long enough to set up a decent pic.

With the flash, I don't know anything about using that yet. I've just really been shooting on auto mode and if the flash goes on automatically then that's it.

I'm not sure when to use the flash. Do you just use when natural light is quite low?

no point fannying about with the different settings if you don't remember what does what!

portrait mode would be the one between the smiley face and the mountain.

no... the advice i would give to you for now would be to keep it switched on all the time. switch it off if you want to avoid it bouncing back (e.g. through windows) or causing too much glare.

Oh you mean 'Soft Snap', yes I probably did use that. I was trying that out for a bit.

Why do you ask if I used that?

So use flash with all photos?

I was trying to get cat photos as terrific as tribal_girl but I couldn't even get close. :\

Don't use the scene modes, they're a waste of time. Read a book about photography or an online guide and then you'll take loads better pictures.

Give me a link to an online guide that is simple and straight forward and I'll certainly give it a read. :)
