If your cat has a huge chesire-style grin on its face and is eating doritos like nobody's business then you probably got it high
;)

Haha, when I saw the title I thought of a bunch of turban-wearing long bearded men stoning a cat :p I've heard of several cats beeing attracted to cannabis smoke, but I doubt that your cat is high. Try giving it catmint, that's a horse of another colour!

Cats and their liking for cannabis

Cats, for some reason, seem to find that the smell of cannabis does something to them that's not dissimilar to what catnip does, but it doesn't happen with all cats (then again, not all cats are fans of catnip).

One of my cats took it a step further though; in the past, I've received totally fresh flowerbuds from a friend (fresh as in not even dried, freshly cut from the plant), and one Saturday morning, after I got out of the shower, I saw him almost climbing inside the carrier bag containing the fresh buds. When he emerged, he had a half chewed bud hanging from his mouth; he consequently spent the rest of the weekend behaving as if he were in a Cheech & Chong movie (falling asleep with his head in the food bowl was the highlight - if you can call it that).

Considering cats have a different metabolism to us (eg paracetamol is incredibly toxic to cats), I wanted to make sure it wasn't doing him any damage. I eventually found an Aussie book about cats, that was written by a vet: It didn't have the all drugs are bad approach, and mentioned that some cats do have a liking for the smell, some even enjoy getting stoned, but that overall, cannabis is no more toxic to cats than it is for humans. With that knowledge, I now let him examine "the goods" whenever I get some freshly cut plant material (he doesn't get anywhere near as excited by dried plant material). Sometimes he just rubs his face in it, but other times he'll chew a bit as well (I can tell by how much cat drool there is on the plant material!). None of my other cats are that interested in it, but some of them really like the smell of valerian root (sweaty socks!!). Just like people I suppose.

BTW, cannabis isn't so benign for dogs. One of the components present in cannabis (cannabichromene) really badly effects a dogs sense of balance, to the point where it can make them quite ill (imagine a person with reallly bad motion sickness/seasickness); they can fall over and hurt themselves.

While I in no way condone people who give drugs to animals (for those people: unless you know about their different metabolic routes for drugs, you could easily kill them with something you thought was 'safe'; so don't), if an animal is determined to indulge (and it's not toxic to them) I can't see why you shouldn't allow them the oppertunity every now and again, as long as they don't eat the lot!

PS. That doesn't go for chemicals, as opposed to plant drugs. People know that they can ruin lives, but still indulge to excess; animals don't, so keep them well out of the way, and never let animals have any access to them.

High animals are mad. My ex gf had a cat who was a complete pyscho. Occasionally he'd wander in when we were getting stoned, and her being a huge stoner, and the rest of us being about the same, there'd be smoke everywhere.

After an hour, the cat'd be cuddling up to anyone or just laying out on the floor.

He seemed to like it.

Wouldn't force it on em though. I had my mate telling me she knew I'd fed her dog E, and I was like 'wtf i'm not that fucking cruel or stupid'.

Bit stoned...sorry ;)

I've had to make the odd apology when the aforementioned cat had gone into someones jacket pocket because he'd detected a 'good' smell, then dragged it out of their pocket.

Generally though, he'll only chew a small bit, then go and find a sunbeam to bask in. He has had bouts of what can only be described as cat munchies; eating half a bagel, sweetcorn in a bowl, raspberry yoghurt, Hob-nob biscuits or chocolate Angel Delight are not what you would normally expect a cat to have a liking for (he'll also eat sweetcorn when not stoned now).

Since I wrote the previous post, my other half reminded me of the queen she used to have (sadly RIP now) that was the cat equivalent of a Furry Freak brother. In her time, Magrat (my other half's a Terry Pratchett fan) has, without any prompting, eaten weed and hashish, drunk beer (Newcastle brown ale & guinness), and once even started lapping from someone's glass of tequila. Add to that the fact that she once licked the powder traces from a wrap of speed I forgot to throw away, and pulled over a cannabis plant in the bathroom so she could nibble the buds from it. She once went scurrying after a fragment of a pill that shot across the floor from me cutting one in half for me and my wife, but luckily, my other half got to it before she did.

In the end, if you seemed excessivly interested in something, she learned that sometimes it would be drugs, and was a pain to have in the room at the same time, as she'd be determined to get to what you were looking at.

Given the chance, I'm fairly certain that given the access, some animals would develop problematic behaviour (regarding ingesting drugs) in just the same way that people do (I'm quite certain Magrat would have)

Despite the pretty interesting replies from fastandbulbous, I'm still going to close this.. There's already a big thread regarding getting pets high in Drug Culture, this doesn't really belong here..

edit: I'll just move it where it can get merged, or closed..

the cat may just be looking for some plant matter it his diet.. try growing some kitty grass (wheat grass) and see how much he likes that hehe

whenever i am stoned my cat is really affectionate to me, like it knows im in an altered state of mind. anyone else have experiences similar? or am i just trippin?

I light up a bowl and my cat will come pur and rub against me. Sometimes even jump into my lap. (rare occurances without weed...i have to make the effort to go pet him :P)

After the bowl, he'll just sit in my lap and pur and let me pet him.

I never blow the smoke into his face or ears...but I would imagine he could get some second hand smoke.

My dog (yes i know the threads about a cat but o well its a pet idnt it?) now is always in the corner that i smoke in in my garage, ever since the time that i smoked this amazingly fine bud in there. And when i come out he always perks up and shit.. i swear its like he can smell it... hes a german shepard ... and like he wont get up for anyone else.. but when i come out there he is all giddy n happy cuz he knows hes gonna smell that bud.... and also i think its cuz one of my friends got him high before off of a hit... i was kinda pissed off that he got my dog high at first cuz hes old and just... cuz hes a dog... but hes fine and lovin the smell of weed :)

sorry that im rambling n shit im so gone 8o

Once me and my friend got some tiny little innocent kittens stoned and it was funny as hell. They all started scarfing down some kibbles LOL. After that every time we were over they'd come up to us and MEOW!

During the Vietnam war it was noticed that buffalo turned to eating opium poppys to cope with the stress of it all and most (Since they've have never of know about addiction) got addicted. :\

There's buffalo in Vietnam? Are you sure?

EDIT: I googled this out and found out that there actually are buffalo in Vietnam.

You learn something new every day.

^^^^
Yeah that's heaps of water buffaloes there.

Ever heard of the mushroom strain pink buffalo? It's a vietnamese strain that grows on the dung of the pink buffalo, hence the name. Learn something new every day. :)

Yea man, I feel you.

When I get my cat stoned, she seems much more alert, looking around and easily surprised by sounds. She goes to the window and is fascinated. Then I usually cant resist the urge to pet her (since she's so goddamn fluffy!). She seems really confused and much less defensive. She doesn't try to get away or avoid my constant petting.

It FEELS like we're on the "same wavelength." She meows and makes weird sounds in a more pathetic, frequent, and curious fashion when she's high.

A friend of mine has a dog that loves weed. He actually will follow anyone with weed, and my friend can always tell when someone has weed and isn't saying so because his dog will just follow the person everywhere until it is smoked. The dog will even come right up to the person taking a hit from a pipe and sit in front of them waiting for smoke. Usually he takes about 3-4 hits of good sensimilla and then rolls over to let us know he's done. :]
