the official NCAA football thread

Except that you've just booted 30+ teams from any hope of a bowl :\ TCU and Arkansas and Washinton State and Memphis and Idaho - you know, those teams that manage to go over .500 with 6 wins and are 'bowl eligible'? You've just stolen their post-season incentive, and taken money from their program (and conference) and give a double or triple money pot to the teams using those bowls for playoffs. THAT won't happen.

That's why I'd say you can only get away with doing that to 2 or 3 bowls for the few teams that would be in the big money anyways, or just hold the playoffs outside the bowl system if you want 8 or 16 teams, and only use bowls for the last few. You'd then be getting even worse teams in your bottom bowls, but you aren't double or triple dipping for the big boys :\.

In my dreams, most of that 'extra bowl' money would get shunted back to the other programs that need it, but we know that's know how things work in the real world. :\

never gonna happen.

Theres gotta be more than 16 bowl games right now, you can use all of them and make those bowls different parts of the bracket and still keep the conference - bowl alliances.

I dunno, we put a man on the moon, we can fucking make a college playoff

reed pretty much hit the nail on the head. and you know what, december 16th just wouldnt be the same without watching san jose state vs. akron in the "Dove Hand Soap Bowl"

beenhead- im definitely not trying to argue that ohio state has a strong schedule. i think the next 4 games are by far their toughest, and after blowing teams out for 2 months it's going to be interesting to see how perform against better competition on the road.

Cocktail Party

Looking at how UF has been revived in their hunt for the SEC (and nat'l...albeit a longshot) championships, and most people are not giving UGA much credit, I think the Gators are primed to lose this one :\ But maybe that's just me expecting the worst and hoping for the best. I saw where Richt had been educating the UGA players on the rivalry, and how they've lost 15 of the last 17 (last win was 1997). There was reference to how Spurrier started the UF domination in the series (though I think we're still behind overall). One of the members made the following comment:
Steve Spurrier has just been indicted in the Michael Vick case. Seems he has been slaying Bulldogs for years.........

Still kicking ideas, and while we can't institute a playoff, we can play what-if and guess at how you'd see a playoff setup. For me, it'd be the top 4 teams, let them play mid (2 weeks after the conference championships), then the winners face off 2 weeks later for the ultimate championship. Forget any conference ties, and ND privileges 8) , just take the top 4 and let 'em go. Taking the top 2 is always an issue on who should be there. And I understand that going with the top 4 means #5-#8 will bitch saying why not us. Well, because you couldn't get into the top 4, thats why, dumbass.

I know the lower divisions go thru like 16 team playoffs or something, but I accept that the bowls aren't going to go away and thereby need to be accomodated for. Let the bowls keep their alliances and traditions, just let the BCS idiots keep their 'system' of rotating which of the big 4 bowls are being used - one or two for 'bowl games' and two for playoff (possibly a third for the championship). Yes, it's all about money, and that means two teams get a double dip in the money pot - they'll have earned it.

Ditto....

Even 8 teams in my mind is too many.....It competely downgrades the reg season.....

In most sports u have to be just good enough to make it to the playoffs and if u get hot u can win a championship.....Ask the Colorado Rockies....Does each and every game have as much significance as the CFB greg season games do?

Every CFB game is a playoff......

I just think that the BCS should be expanded to a 4 team playoff max as well as the formula being tweeked a bit to force more teams to schedule quality OOC BCS opponents....That would kill the bickering and it would be extremely rare to see 5+ teams go undefeated (or see 5+ 1 loss teams desrving of a chot at a NC)and cause a big contorversy like we've had in the past....

Why do i water at the mouth when LSU plays UF anf Auburn each year??? B/c it most likely determines the SEC title race

A FOOTBALL FINAL FOUR NCAA COULD HAVE 'SEMIFINALS' BY 2011
July 17, 2007 on nypost.com

For a "Plus-1" to happen, the Rose Bowl would have to be willing to loosen its grip on matching the top Big Ten and Pac-10 representatives. That is considered the biggest stumbling block.

When the Rose Bowl announced its deal with ABC, the BCS was forced to make several concessions, including waiving the league's $6 million BCS entry fee.

The BCS also assured the Rose Bowl that it could retain its Big Ten/Pac-10 alliance, agreed not to require the Rose to accept a team from a non-BCS conference (think Boise St.) and guaranteed that the nation's oldest bowl game would keep its coveted late-afternoon time slot on New Year's Day.

"There's a lot of history in that game with those conferences," one source said. "I understand their position. But I think a 'Plus-1' is inevitable.

Freakin Pac10 and Big10+1 8) Still, I think it could be worked so that the 4 major bowls can get closer to their original conference affiliations and we still have a playoff ;) Current contracts hold until at least 2010 :|

Personally, I would say 'fuck you' if you don't want to participate in how the nat'l champ is crowned - Boise St, an undefeated Auburn, an undefeated Utah, they'd all be happy to participate in what the rest of the country is doing. If the Pac10 want to drop out of the BCS, then they are saying their tradition (and I can respect tradition) is more important than having any of their schools crowned as BCS champ - their choice. I think the Big10+1 would kind of roll along with the Pac10 but not be willing to make a stand either way. I was unaware of the concessions made to get the Pac10 into the BCS, though I have read more than enough of the concessions made to ND 8(. Screw 'em. If you don't want to play with the rest of the country, that's your choice, just don't cry foul when you're left out of the top position, even if you have a team that is better than anyone elses. :p

Bandit, I dont wanna here anymore of that negativity, were gonna win, and were gonna enjoy it. If anything South Carolina is gonna get us.

I do feel your concern though, UGA must be dying to beat us, they love to make us lose. Also, they lead the series by far.

no we don't, 10 or 8 games, depending on where you're asking. I don;t know why you guys are scared. I know the Dawgs have something to prove and everything, but Florida really has our number, or Meyer does, just like Spurrier.

Wow what a game, that BC game was pretty damned good.

All I saw was the last 4 minutes... but that was all I needed to see.

VT dominated the first 58 minutes of that game....

BC only 2 but came away and stole that game...

Matt Ryan made some unbelivable throws in the last 2 drives....

I thought for sure the game was in the bag when Ryan threw that INT w/ about 6 minutes left

Yea the first 58 minutes was boring as shit but the last 2 made it worth watching. I wonder if LSU will jump BC in some polls this week BC definatly looks vulnerable.

LSU will not be jumping BC in any polls, mark my words.

tonight is exciting for me as I get to see the Buckeyes first real threat all season. Kirk Herbstreit said that OSU was the team in NCAA with the most to prove and I believe him. Penn State scares me because it is a very difficult place to play -- and their notorious "white out" is in affect. they would love to dismantle the Buckeye's National Championship hopes and dreams, and they are ranked #25, just like Minnesota was before Ohio State destroyed them.

Big Easy better than SEC?

the Big Easy might be better than the SEC this year. before you jump me, think about it like this. Kentucky, who has bettered some top tier SEC teams this year just got beat by SEC cellar-dweller Miss State. Miss State lost to West Virginia a couple weeks back while Kentucky barely outgunned Lousville (who is horrible this year) while L'ville got beat by the Syracuse (who was 0-3). the Big Easy is better than the SEC!

makes sense?

not really, we all know you can't play this type of guessing game for football. that's why it is my favorite sport. but just think about those facts.

anyways I am watching the Georgia VS Florida game and it has to be one of my fave college football games this year. it was a sight to see the UGA bench clear out after that first touchdown. now I have to head to work and try to talk my boss into letting me get off work early to watch the OSU game.

Well....

HOW BOUT DEM DAWGS?? LOL

Even with the atrocious officiating against UGA (cry all you want UF fans, it was blatantly bad), the dawgs still won.

year in and year out georgia is one of the hardest teams for me to read. how is that the same team who lost to south carolina?
