ok! I finally started it.
:)

This thread is for asking about what to wear with what, what is popular when, and what sucks, etc. It should also be used for recommendations for where to buy certain things.

I know it sounds really trivial to those who don't, but some of us like to integrate trends and look cool and stuff. Hell, I don't even know what to wear with half the stuff I own.
Ok, my contribution.:)

Apparently some of the hot new trends coming up for fall are menswear, ANYTHING VELVET, and short blazers, with lots of layers.

I've been DYING to know - what's with the skirt over jeans trend? Does the skirt matter, or will any skirt do? :| Also, if anybody knows a good spot to shop to get some of the new menswear type of pants, I'd love to know, because I love that trend already!:)

the skirt over jeans thing is in again? i remember people wearing that a few years ago.

when i went to the store the other day i noticed the hippy style is back in again. what, did it skip a year and come back? usually they wait 5+ years to rehash trends :D

I love this season's long, flowing hippy skirts with tanktops and big jewelry.

And I am a complete whore for oversized designer bags regardless of season. This season't purchase is a lime green Kate Spade brand. ;)

Never done the skirt over jeans and don't plan to.

Randycaver - I recommend Express for menswear pants. Different sizes that fit well, different cuts, different lengths - a pleaser for every girl, and they're reasonable. :)

For my body type (tallish, hourglass, not scrawny and not into the plus sizes) I also highly recommend Guess or Lucky Brand jeans.

I think I may be ahead of the game and invest in a red velvet blazer next paycheck. I love jewel tones and big stylish costume jewelry, and I think a red velvet blazer, hot neutral colored top and menswear pants would be a fantastic work-to-play outfit, properly accessorized.

Anyone have any shoe recommendations for the fall?

^^ apparently chunkier is in, pointy toe is falling out of fashion. still heavily embroidered and decorated, though.

awesome!! I never got into the pointy toes. I think I'd die of pain, plus they look UGLY. I love chunky heels though, since I can actually WALK in them! I tried on shoes with a kitten heel the other week and I almost fell on my ass just walking to get a look in a shoe mirror only a few feet away :\

I'm sorry, I know this is off topic but I thought Alasdair had typed that b/c of the avatar, and I was about to message him that since he's come back to SF he has caught teh gh3y. ;)

I REALLY need functional and fashionable shoes as I commute, walk a lot and am not sedentary at the office. I want style with substance! I like chunky shoes, that's awesome to hear. I CANNOT wear pointy toed shoes, they are the devil's work but they are cute as hell!

Silly, don't you know city girls wear proper shoes when walking and change into cute footwear at work! :)

heh. well, my job doesn't allow me to wear cute shoes :p

so, any dress shoes I would have would be for when I go out. If I can't walk in a cute pair of heels sober, then I'd def going to be on my ass when I'm drinking lol :D

Back when I worked an office job though, I'd wear cute shoes to work then walk around the office barefoot all the time =D

I am so unfashionable these days I shouldn't even be reading this thread BUT you wanna cool purse......get this one. http://www.seatbeltbag.com/products.asp

We had a friend visit who I hadn't seen in a while, and I couldn't take my eyes off this bag, and once I realized it was made out of Seat belts, well. That is just cool.

Designers, and then that shows up in the stores, and thus shows up on people. Basically you'll find certain styles and colors everywhere during certain seasons based upon what the higher-ups have decided to do. It's kind of the same way executives decide what's going to be 'in' for a television viewing season, or movies for that year, etc.

The skirt & jeans thing only works if you're rail-thin imo, and even then rarely. I've never seen it pulled off well.

For velvet: I think this is one of the first times velvet has come back around in a while so you probably have a damn good chance of finding cool things at thrift or consignment stores, especially if you're crafty with a sewing machine and can turn an old dress into something newer. I found a couple of velvet blazers at my local salvation army last year for $4 and got so many compliments on them then...I definitely plan to bring them back out this fall. Or winter. Whenever it gets cool enough to wear a freaking jacket around here.

The hippie style is back, but it's decidely different from previous returns imo. The last time we saw it, it was associated with neutrals and very natural makeup and this is almost hippy + gypsy with lots of jewelry and brigher colors. The former I'm not so fond of, but the latter I tend to like a lot.

From one of my magazines...fall favorites...
Empire dresses
Skinny pants (eeww.)
Poufy skirts (also eww)
Menswear basics
Russian dressing (that's kind of cool...like gypsy stuff for cold weather)
Eclectic textures
Clean classics
Touches of romance
Ladylike coats

It seems like lace and solid color tights are back in like crazy too.

EW i will NEVER wear chunky shoes--- im 5'2 and the last thing i need is to look shorter and chunky shoes do that to ya. plus, im not in high school anymore, so out with the chunk! (what not to wear = my favorite show ever, and they will back me up on that!)

i tend to dress very simple and more classy than trendy, but incorperate a single trend. embellishment overdosing isn't hard to do and i feel really sorry for people who fall victim to that.

yay for menswear~! and yay for blazers still being in style--- anyone can pull a blazer off, and its so much more fun than your typical cardigan. looks much more put together, mature, and clean... as well as less housewife. ha!

i still think that a pair of slimmer boots, boot cut jeans, a blazer and a lacey camisole with some fun big earrings will be my favorite outfit this fall.

Tunic tops are definitely back, which I think is awesome - it hides the underwear that seems to be permanently hanging out of the back of my pants. I'm definitely more of a "graver" than anything when it comes to my overall "look", but I've definitely gravitated towards a lot of the pastels and quasi-hippy skirts and sandals type look this summer. I'm definitely digging this season's earrings too. I'm not terribly into earrings, but I've picked up a few new pairs lately.

I always seem to be running ahead of the game though - just ask my mom. Every time I sew a new item of clothing, it seems to be the rage about 2 months later. (I typically make things that aren't in fashion for obvious reasons :))

And I should add, too, that I HATE pointy-toed shoes. I only know one girl that they look good on, and that's because she's a fashion goddess and she always does everything RIGHT. Give me my knee-high boots any day... :) And I'm tired to death of flip flops...

wait, wtf is menswear? business clothing? i've never heard that term before.

oh and death to pointy shoes! buzzys always trying to get me to buy them. im still rocking the slightly square toed shoes for work and sneakers everywhere else.

Menswear styling would be like pinstripe pants, wider legs, blazers, that sort of thing. Women's clothing just takes the general idea and snazzies it up.

Pointy-toed shoes are insanely bad for your feet, but I have to admit I own a pair of hot-pink ones. They were $10 and looked so cute I had to have them....they are amazingly not to uncomfortable, but being hot pink it's not like they're for everyday wear.

If you like a large variety of jewelry and you can generally wear whatever (i.e., no nickel sensitivity), Body Shop (yes, the hootchie clothes one) has a really great selection. It's arranged by color, and it's made even better by the fact that it's always 3 pieces for $10...necklaces, earrings, everything. With that price it doesn't matter if you only wear them a few times.

god damn, i'm so glad i'm a guy and can throw on a plain shirt and a pair of dickies and be done with it...

where do you all find the time for this stuff!?

solids with prints on the inside...

i just bought an awesome jacket solid outside, inside if i roll the sleeves up or take off you see the flowery print inside.

hard to describe.
i saw it in a magazine a few weeks ago for fall and yesterday i happened to see it in a store and love it.

i have one of those! its summery, though, white and sleek--- with an awesome olive/turquoise/tan/lavender floral inside. good choice miss dg ;)
