^^he also bowled 14 wides, but yeah I'd imagine he would be in the mix. For mine, I still think Kasper is the best of the rest but yeah doubt he will play for Australia again even though he is one of the best bowlers in Australia. I think he is another guy who if he was in a different country would have had a massive international career.

Yeah Kaspa and Dizzy, those two seem to have a lot of lovers around. They've never really done it for me (except the time Kaspa went all Dennis Lillee style in that 2020 game against NZ - that was sweet) but each to their own I spose. I think Dizzy bowled pretty well in the domestic season, but it looks as though the selectors are committed to a 'youth policy' when it comes to bowlers atm.

Like you say there must be a ton of players in Australia who would have had a successful internation career had they been able to play for another country. A bit sad really.

For Dizzy to get back into the team he will have to do more than bowl well, he will have to bust out a number of match winning performances, like some big hauls. He isn't going to get back in just getting regular 2fers and 3fers.

I think the best cricketer australia has produced but never played for australia is jammie siddons. A fucking amazing cricketer but never played for australia even though he went on a load of tours and was just unlucky to be ill when his chances arose.

As a South African, obviously I am happy with 2 wins so far, but I am really not impressed with the SA performace still. What we end up doing is playing real well in the beginning and moving along quite nicely until someone like Hussy comes in and suddenly a huge wobble.

We seem to do this every bluddy game, I wish SA would just up their blooming performance!

Without a doubt bowlers win test matches as has been said and to be honest i'm not sure where we should turn to fill McGrath's shoes. For me Kasper doesn't do enough with the ball. Imo once the batsmen figure out that he can he only move the ball one way they look pretty comfortable against him. I'm trying to remember back to the ashes series when he was bowling. Far too many of his deliveries to the left handers we being left when pitching on middle/ middle and off and the batsmen could still confidently let them slide past the off stump.

Tait i have to say last ashes was a bit disappointing and his effort of 6 wickets in the ING cup final was o.k but 14 wides....... Fair enough if you bowl a ball that's there to be hit, even they can still take wickets but some of the wides he bowled were massive. If he can somehow get his radar going i think he could be a big threat as he bowled with some great pace in that match. I just can't quite see him as permanent test player yet.

I still have a huge soft spot for Dizzy and would love to see him back to his best, but he just looked out of sorts on the weekend. He still managed to bowl a tight spell but no one went for runs on the weekend so it was hard to read anything into it. I think if he could recapture some form and take some huge bags like Beech said he would be a shoe in for the spot. At his best he plays a very similar role to Pigeon it's juts a matter of if he can get back to his peak.

The one bowler i think could be in the mix for a test spot is Shane Watson. Before his injury he was bowling as fast as he ever has and has made good comeback from his shoulder surgery. He can move the ball and bowls with good pace. I just wish he could be allowed to concentrate on his bowling and not be seen as an all rounder. He's no Brett Lee but that's the way i'd like him to be looked at within the team.....a bowler who just so happens to be pretty good with the bat down the order.:

Kiwis are continuing our excellent home form, though admittedly only against the West Indies. We're about to go 4-0 up in the series, and we've only been seriously troubled once. Bowling's been good, even with some experienced players injured or rested. Batting's been a bit erratic but we've still hit 280 and 320.

I'm fairly confident about a semi-final spot at the World Cup now. We've got enough of a squad that players are being rested, which is very rare for us ;)

England have started at a run a ball against India.

Hah, Fleming was 10 after 10 overs and then he hit 35 runs off 8 balls to get his 50 off 36 balls (four consecutive fours in one over and three consecutive sixes in the next, and then presumably a three...) :D

Go us!

I thought this series would be a whitewash, particularly without Lara.

Go RSA!

It breaks my heart to say this, but I really think that the West Indies have progressed from being just a shit team to a really really shit team. Bangladesh would be a good match up for them now, most other teams simply outclass them by a large margin.

A very sad state of affairs:(

Interesting to see that the selectors are looking all over the place for bowlers

What do people think - Symonds vs Watson?
Personally I prefer Watson. Basically because I don't think that Symonds should be playing Test cricket. I don't think his bowling is that good, and I don't think his batting is suited to the game. I don't think he is that good at batting when the chips are down and he needs to hold on to his wicket. His success this summer came when the pressure was off (if memory serves me correctly :) )

^ You could be forgetting Symonds match winning, series saving innings in the second final of the one day series when he came to the crease at something like 3/10 and hit something like 145 of about 124 balls. (If my memory serves me correctly :))

Symonds vs Watson is a hard one imo and it depends on if you are talking about picking one over the other as an all rounder. I think Watson is a better bowler but i guess it comes down to how many overs the rest of our attack are going to have put in around Lee's short spells. Symonds is better with the bat and has the advantage of being to able to bowl more overs in a day to take a bit of the load off Bracken and Lee, but let's face it.....our attack can appear pretty pedestrian between the time Lee finishes a spell and the time Warnie comes on, so i think i'd have to go for Watson backing up our pace attack over Symonds.

The only question i have is " would you play Watson as specialist bowler and retain Symonds as an all rounder"?

I would pick Symonds over Watson any day. That's not to say I think Symonds should be playing test cricket, but he's got a lot more ability than Watson. He just needs to learn to play the game of test cricket, much like someone like Chris Cairns had to. I am sure in future he will be a good test player.

Yeah that's a fair point.

I also don't know why it's absolutely neccesary to select an all-rounder in the side. This obsession with an allrounder has probably been covered in this thread before, it seemed to arise during the Ashes when Flintoff was running amok, and then Australian cricket community went 'we want one too' just like a spoiled child would (I like that analogy!).

If in the past Australia has been able to dominate the rest of the world without a specified allrounder why do we need one now?

I like watson, but I'm far mor confident when symonds goes to the crease, he just seems to have an aura about him

Symonds V Watson. Result neither in Test cricket. In 1 Dayers Symmonds wins easily because he can tee off and play his natural game which as has been said many times before is not up to Test standard. I don't think Watson is up to scratch as a bowler for Test cricket. There are others in Australia much better than him. The only way he should get a game is as an all rounder if he can improve his batting as well as his bowling and if Australia continues its silly quest for an all rounder.
I don't think the speed of the bowlers matter so much in terms of our attack being somewhat pedestrian. Lee gets wickets due to his blistering pace but if he doesn't move the ball, against good batsmen he will get donuts. Although a good batsman might not score from him, he won't get out if he was a solid technique (shouldn't get out). Its more about being able to move the ball and not even having to be able to move it a mile. Only really need the ability to move the ball 4 inches or so, any further than that and your missing the edge of the bat. Thats why guys who bowl at lesser speeds are still quite effective. Kasper has the ability to move the ball and bowl at around 140km and get some reverse swing in the right conditions, so for me he would be my pick. Same with Bracken, he is slower again than Kasper and bowls at about McGrath's pace but has advantage of being left armer (have a soft spot for lefties as thats what i am) and being able to move the ball quite a lot. If Dizzy can take a few bags it would be great to have him in the team again as he could be quite hostile even though significantly slower than Lee.
I guess the other aspect of fast bowling that we often neglect to consider is height. Brett Lee is quite short for a fast bowler so really he needs to be able to bowl as quick as he does because he doesn't get the bounce that someone like Kasper gets. Bruce Reid was a classic example, the bloke was fucking huge, almost as tall as Joel Garner, his height is what made him so effective. I think this was also the thinking behind giving Dorey a chance, he is same height as Bruce Reid and gets a whole lot of bounce from not alot of speed and is hard to play, just like Harmisson. Unfortunately it seems at this point Dorey isn't up to it.

HAHAHAHAHA!

South Africa 289 for 7 (Gibbs 66, Kemp 51*) beat Australia 93 (Ntini 6-21) by 196 runs

Wtf is going on over there?

hmmm, how fucken humiliating, I'm sure there's another word that can emphasise it more, but I can't think of it now, that was just shocking, nothing short of woeful.

Surely the selctors can run into sundays game with the same side...
