Backyard Cricket Rules

The ICC in conjunction with Cricket Australia have today released a standard code of conduct for Backyard Cricket.

1. GENERAL RULES

1a. Can't Get Out First Ball: Curious rule introduced to give the token unco dickhead a reprieve. Smart-arse batsmen use it to hone their reverse sweep; which becomes interesting when smart-arse bowlers use it to hone their beamer.

1b. Caught Behind (auto wikky): Since no one has the desire or the reflexes to stand in the slips cordon, an edge onto the back fence constitutes instant dismissal. Has signalled the death of the late cut.

1c. One Hand, One Bounce: This popular innovation (When a fielder can dismiss a batsman by catching the ball in one hand on the first bounce) is essential to the very fabric of the sport. Importantly, it means a game can be organised with a minimum of players. Note that this rule only applies when the fielder is holding a beer in their other hand.

1d. No LBW: When no umpires are available (or trustworthy), the only option is to can the LBW rule altogether, ensuring cagey batsmen shuffle across the crease as is test driving a Zimmer frame.

1e. Six And Out (Then Fetch It): Introduced to combat space and energy restrictions. It's rumoured to have been initiated by a hapless bowler living alongside a pack of Rottweilers.

1f. Standard Over: All veteran backyard bowlers know that the standard length of an over in backyard cricket ranges from anything between 10-12 balls. You only relinquish the bowling duties when questioned by any fielders or opposing team members. But only after the standard response of "Two to Come".

2. ESSENTIAL ITEMS

2a. Esky: Strategically placed at the bowler's end, the esky is the shrine, the fuel, the Richie Benaud of backyard cricket - because it holds the beer.

2b. Balls: A minimum of 3 tennis balls is advised, as there's always some smart-arse who delights in tonking them over the fence (see rule 1e). Advanced exponents use electrical tape around half the ball to give it more swing than Austin Powers.

2c. Dog: Preferable of Kelpie or Heeler extraction, so it can field every ball, including those that disappear under the house or thorny bushes. The downside is that they produce more slobber than a 14 year old male Penthouse reader. The upside is the dog will sleep for 3 days straight afterwards.

2d. Rubbish Bin: It would be nice to think you can clean up your own mess, but in reality the bin makes a perfect set of stumps.

2e. Bat: Boasting multiple scratches and dents, and no grip left on the handle, it's usually of 1980's vintage with a single scoop, with a fake signature of Allan Border or Merv Hughes providing added backyard cult status.

3. CODE OF ETHICS

3a. Stumps: The game draws to a close when,
i) Your host finally cooks the snags after the barbie has run out of gas,
ii) Macca hits the last ball onto the road and it disappears down the drain (not withstanding rules 1e and 2c),
iii) You can't get that batsman out with any type of bowling pace or spin, or
iv) Your girlfriend cracks the shits and wants to go home because you "become a shit" when you hang around with your mates.

3b. Flower Damage: Any respectful male will cringe and help hide the fact that you have just topped your girlfriend's petunias. Somehow, the universal threat of a week-long drought bonds the male species.

3c. Spilt Beer: Ideally, the offending batsman should apologise profusely and offer to replace the vanquished stubbie. Fat Chance. The feat prompts shitloads of laughter, and the usually triumphant "Get me one while you're at it!"

3d. No Running Between Wickets: Every backyard cricket specialist should know this phrase, "The words fun and run don't go together." Just ask Arjuna Ranatunga. Besides, how the hell are you supposed to run in thongs?

3e. Courtesy Call: Always invite the chicks to have a bat. They usually say no, but on the odd occasion, they do take a grip of the willow. You can bowl a couple of dollies to her so she can hit before ending this freakish sideshow with a yorker. Most chicks hold a bat as if they're chopping wood, and they bowl as if throwing left-handed. And they can't handle yorkers. Still, someone has to make the salad.

Fair effort by Gilly today. He fell just short of posting a century in a session which would have been a remarkable achievement.

Feel free to contribute to my appreciation thread in the lounge. This man should be honoured with a shrine and nominated for Australian of the Year immediately.

Gilly and Punter produced some very entertaining cricket. But damn I wish Boof was still in the side, hopefully he will return soon and Australia will cease its constant search for a genuine all rounder when they realise guys like Watson and Symmonds are muppets when it comes to Test Cricket.

How good was it to see McGrath come in at 10!!! He would have been absolutely loving it. Pitty he wasn't able to stick around longer but he did play one cracking cracking shot through mid wicket for 4.
Then when McGill came out to bat he looked rather pissed and was trying to hit the cover off the ball. Looked like a man on a mission to prove he should be batting above McGrath. I say no way, if McGrath keeps working hard I believe he could be Australia's next genuine all rounder! ;)

Yeah Boof is a legend and I really hope he gets back in the team to tour NZ and then onto the Ashes Tour. Hopefully he was only out of this game so they could give a few other guys a run in a dead rubber of a match. Boof smashed a great 90something in very quick time for SA against Vic. Hopefully the selectors take note of that.
I say out with Watson and in with Boof and out with MacGill and in with Kasper. I think its only matter of time til Kasper is back in the side. MacGill only ever plays when we play at the SCG on a big turning pitch. But still I reckon Kasper would be feeling pretty pissed off to not be in the side.

I fucking wish i'd gone to the game today, rather than day 1....even though the first 3 hours were rained out it contained infinetely more entertainment. Instead i paid $85 to watch salmon buttcheeks eek out the most boring of centuries. he spent like an hour on 83. I read the best quote in the paper the next day: "Not since Duran Duran has anyone been as transfixed by the 80s."

Will Warney walk in today's tsunami appeal game at the MCG? During Saturday's appeal telecast, Andrew Denton - we think jokingly - mentioned to Warne that he would donate $10,000 if he walked during his innings in the game. Warne then said he would. Denton added that he should do it out of the blue, for no reason, perhaps while the bowler was in his run-up to bowl. We shall see today.

AND HE DID! What a classic.....he walked all the way to the fence almost before returning to the centre. And then Billy Bowden had the nerve to yellow card him!

poo bum wee fart

I was at work all during the scintillating 345 by the ROTW and had to watch the boring Asian innings instead.

Bluelight just keeps on getting better and better.

First there's the hot chicks...

and there's cricket...

It's like heaven on the internet.

Pyjama cricket just gets worse.

20/20 cricket. What can i say. As a test match fan i hope this experiment fails miserably. If it's the acb's intention to try and get more people to get along to the grounds and watch the "real" version of the game surely there are better ways to achieve this than this farcical version of the game.

I can't imagine what it must be like as a bowler to play in an enviroment where the odds are so stacked against you, and i fail to see how how this can be of benefit to batsmen when it comes to making the transition to playing in the test arena.:\

I've played 20/20 cricket.

It's fun as hell, especially when you're hitting sixes constantly, and taking wickets all the time as well.

Then again, it didn't make me a better batsman or bowler really. It fed my slogging side of me, and since I'm a slogger it matched me quite well, but I've tried to change that.

I don't mind 20/20 to be played in Australia, as long as it's not a regular thing. Maybe say max 10 games in a year? And only 2 being international games?

20/20 won't benefit the players, but if it can attract more people into the game, then by all means play it! Just don't make it a regular thing, otherwise it can get boring. Just a few games a year should be good enough.

I just wonder if such an abridged version of the game will ever attract more people to the longer version. For the last couple of years competition for places in the both the Test and one day squad has never been more fierce, which just points to how strong both the Pura and ING cups are at the moment and how deep and rich the talent is in both competitions.

unfortunately they still fail to attract major crowds, which is where i think the acb's attention should be drawn to. I know if tonight's game is anything to go by with 20,000+ attending it's big money, i just wish there was a way of getting more people along to support our domestic leagues, and i'm not sure 20/20 cricket is the answer. My mind is goes back to last seasons Pura cup where Victoria were set 455 on the last day against N.S.W and they got it. 455 in a days cricket, it doesn't get any better than that.

I don't think there's any place for 20/20 cricket at the highest level. The calendar is full enough as it is, and the 50 over game is still as popular as ever in Australia. Maybe they can have a couple of exhibition games a year with the A team, but they won't consistently draw those crowds. The only reason they drew so many people was because of the novelty factor.

I LOVE BRIAN LARA!

Just a random comment. But its good to see him again.

I think 20/20 is a good concept. A friend of mine travels to England each year to play cricket over there and then comes back for the Australian summer. He said 20/20 cricket over there is huge even being played at club level midweek. It draws a good sized crowd even at club games because when it all comes down to it the majority of people like seeing spectacular big hitting and wickets falling. If this wasn't true then Gilly wouldn't be as popular as he is. I don't think that 20/20 should be as big a part of cricket as Test or One Day Cricket but there certainly is a place for it. Of course some are not going to approve at all but the cricket purist turned their noses up at one day cricket at its inception and some still do.
People don't go to watch ING and Pura Cup matches because there isn't the interest in the players. Apart from true cricket enthusiests most people wouldn't even know the name of half the players who only represent their state and not country. 20-20 may be a way of getting people down to watch state cricket. The public may not be willing to watch a bunch of "no names" play "boring conservative normal cricket" but may be willing to watch them play a game where there is pretty much the promise of big hitting fireworks.

I'd love to play a game of 20-20 cricket. I'm primarily a bowler and would really enjoy the challenge of bowling in these conditions. Also I like to score rapidly with the bat so would also like the challenge of trying to score off a barage of yorkers.

For the record I dont consider state players to be 'no namers' or any cricket to be 'boring and conservative'. That was just to make a point of how some view cricket.

That's a reason why i would rather see the Australian A concept being used more widely than 20/20 cricket. Let the public see just how good the players are at state level at the moment.

man i love cricket! i used to play for school. used to be bloody good to but now im too busy to devote my sundays. Im always up for a bit of back yard though.

today the Paki team had an awesome innings from what I seen of the tail enders, didn't happen to see all of the Australians batting, but I hope the Paki's beat them.
