To my wife who gave me a solid serve on her way to bed with 5 overs remaining..."Two ducks swimming..22" thankyou Kaspa that definately shut her up, the check is in the mail.

Apparently Shannon Noll has recorded a "modern" version of the come on aussie come on song.....pfft, nothing beats the original!

"Lillee's pounding down like a machine, Pascoe's making divets in the green, Laird is making runs, Dougie's chewing gum, and the Chappell's eyes have got that killer gleam. Mr Walker's playing havoc with the bat, Redpath, it's good to see you back, Marsh is taking wickets, Hooksey's clearing pickets...."

Does anybody have that on mp3??

P.S - I really wish I could have seen the last few overs of the Sydney one dayer.

But then I have 2 pubs within pissing distance of me and I didn't think to go down to them. deeerrr

Now that was a great game!! :)

Awesome seats, awesome crowd, awesome cricket, full-strength beer!! no rain, not too hot, not too cold...

I had a ball, drunk myself stupid and watched McGrath knock over the last wicket with about 9 balls to go!! (I think... was quite drunk by the end... 11 beers will do that to you ;))

That was a fantastic experience :)

CB :)

Great game.
Aussies win
Gilchrist brilliant again
Hogg good
Harris gutsy very gutsy
Cairns and Mills great display of big hitting

Symonds fails again, another duck. Am I the only person who thinks he is overrated? He has shown good form in pura cup and ING Cup and made runs in County cricket in England but really of late for Australia I don't think he has been as impressive as everyone seems to think he is. I would consider him a pretty average all rounder. Both forms of his bowling - medium pacers and spinners are pretty part time and not that far ahead of any other batsman that bowls a bit and his batting form at an International standard isn't great. He has struggled to make runs against classy oposition. I sometimes think the team would be better served by having Katich in the side as he is also a bowling option as well as being an excellent batsman but Symmonds does have a big rep and I couldn't see him being dropped for Katich.

Decider is going to be interesting on an unpredicatable and quite possibly under prepared Gabba pitch due to the shitloads of rain Brisbane has had.

Symonds is a gun, he is just used wrong. His job is to clear the fence and it is a shame that they bat him above Clarke. The amount of times he has got out early in his innings without attempting to hit a big shot is ridiculous. he needs to play his natural game, and he can't do that coming in at number 5 after we've just lost 3 quickish wickets. He is a lower-order hitter and should only be promoted up the order when he are in a good position and want to drive the nail into the coffin. He doesnt play well under pressure and often plays from the crease early in his innings. I do think he is the best player for the job though ...

Katich is way too loose to bowl in pyjama cricket. i am a big fan of symonds. i think his variety with the ball is excellent and he is capable of bowling 8-10 tight overs in a match if need be.

this is my ODI squad and lineup for the first match in the VB Series.

1. Gilchrist
2. Hayden
3. Ponting
4. Bevan
5. Lehmann
6. Clarke
7. Symonds
8. Harvey
9. Kasprowicz
10. Gillespie
11. McGrath

12. B. Lee
13. Martyn
14. Jimmy Maher
15. Hogg
16. Katich
17. Langer
18. Nathan Bracken
19. Shaun Tait

there is no need for a specialist spinner in a one-day side .... unless he is of the calibre of warne or murali.

I think thats bit of a cop out for Symonds. You can't have a player in your team who can be excused for not playing well under pressure and not being able to adjust his game according to the situation. Adjusting your game depending on the situation doesn't mean you can't play your natural game it just means slight adjustment. For Symonds this would mean not trying to smash every ball just the loose ball when Australia is in trouble. I'd say he is batting at 5 because his batting is considered stronger than his bowling. If he was to bat at 7 his bowling would need to be a lot stronger. Even though he has good variety he is still very hittable and is the bowler that the opposition is going to go after. Just because he is a natural striker of the ball and is there to score quickly doesn't mean he can't bat up the order. It doesn't phase Gilchrist or Hayden too much opening the batting, so surely coming in at 5 with the shine off the ball Symonds should be able to make a few.
I agree that Clarke should be batting above him as should Lehmann which means Symonds would bat at 7. I don't know who I would replace him with but I think Katich is more than capable of playing pyjama cricket. If Warne still played 1 Dayers then I'd say get rid of Symmonds and select a genuine batsman.

I reckon your team selection is pretty good Diego but I dunno about Bevan. He has been brilliant in the past but I think its a bit late for him. I would fill his position with either Katich, Martyn or Maher. Or as a bit of an ousider Hussey. He has been in awesome form for Victoria. Give him a chance I say. And if Gilly was unavailable I think Haddin would be the replacement but I'd like to see Campbell get a game, he is one of the best batsmen in the world to watch. Plays the reverse sweep pretty well and invented that little chip scoop back over keeper and short fineleg's head.

Fair effort by Langer today, that's not the first time he's dug deep when the team needs him. He's very much the quiet achiever, and yet he's the leading runscorer in the world this year. I couldn't believe it when i read today he's scored 1178 runs for the year, but the figures speak for themself.

Lets play the remember game ..

1992/93, playing against the West Indies ... Bishop, Walsh, Ambrose and Benjamin fired up in the final innings (target 200?).

Langer made 50 from almost 200 balls ... a gutsy innings if ever i've seen one. Wickets were falling left right and centre and the Windies were aiming for the ribcage. Batting with Tim May who made 30 something, Langer was looking good and becoming everyone's new favourite batsman. However, he played a (very poor) pull shot and was caught, cracking under the intense pressure of the great West Indians.

McDermott comes to the crease and it looks all over, but he was so fucken brave. I cheered every ball he faced. He and Tim May put on 50 for the final wicket before McDermott 'top edged' ('helmeted') Walsh to Mr Junior Murray, just 1 run short of the target!

So, my questions to everyone ... did McDermott edge it? .. and was there more pressure on Langers gritty half-century or his awesome 181 today?

Skip to Australia hosting South Africa at the SCG in 1993/1994 ... we are chasing 117 in the 4th innings and i think we got to about 1 for 50 before de Viliers induced an almighty collapse. Martyn comes in at 7 as Tim May had been sent in earlier as a night watchman. In the darkest 2 hours of his test career to date, Martyn struggled to put bat on ball adding just 6 runs including a boundary. Once again Craig McDermott is almost the hero, scoring 30 runs from as many balls to keep the scoreboard moving and the hope of victory alive.

We need about 10 more runs to win and just as you are thinking 'fuck, it would be nice if Martyn would hit the ball or at least run a bye or something' ... he has a rush of blood and spoons a simple catch to cover, leaving McDermott stranded in disbelief. Pigeon comes to the crease and is knocked over by de Villiers almost immediately. Martyn probably shouldered the blame unfairly and his personal calamity somewhat over-shadowed what was truly an amazing spell of bolwing by de Villiers.

My question ... Does this ghost still haunt Martyn and is it the main reason for the 4 years he spent in cricketing obscurity after this incident?

back on 'topic' -

Clarke is too low in the order. there was WAY too much pressure on him today and he choked. When he came to the crease, his body language wasn't the same as when he strides out at 3/250 ... we had a lot of different number 6's before Steve Waugh claimed that position as his own and he proved that it is vitally important to have a trust-worthy number 6 that can do the job under pressure and batting with the tail.

At our (recent) peak, an in-form Waugh and unstoppable Gilchrist was the backbone of our innings, the top 5 established the 400+ score and Waugh and Gilly made it 600 to kill the game in the first two days. Gilchrist could be in the side on batting alone, but he shouldnt have to shoulder too much pressure in a 'rescue mission' situation. Today we were lucky that Langer is the man, but i fear that we need to sort out this number 6 position sooner rather than later.

For obvious reasons Martyn can't bat at 6 (doesnt he average about 20 in that position?), Clarke is too young (imho) and Lehmann is too much of a wildcat. Ponting played number 6 back in the old days, but that was back when it was considered as the 'last batting position' as opposed to 'the anchor'. Ponting is an established first-drop now though and i think that suits him very well. Who can fill the boots of old mate Tugga then? Surely nobody, but Katich is probably the best option in my opinion.

I think the selectors are happy with Martyn at the moment and Lehmann will play for as long as he plays for, batting at 5. Clarke will stay at number 6 until Lehmann retires and then Katich will most probably come into the side, pushing Clarke up a spot to number 5.

I kinda hoped they would exclude Warne in favour of Lee for the Perth Test ... fuck i'd love to see Mcgrath, Gillespie, Kasprowicz and Lee in the same side ... not too sure i liked Pontings idea though...

We won't lose this test match. I can't believe we posted 350 after the start we made .. good work lads. you are truly unstoppable.

If it's the incident i'm thinking of then NO!

my fave part of the remember game is deano asking curtley to take his arm bands off. OMG that was like the turning point of the series.

So it's an anchor you want. Easy just promote Gillespie up the order.;)

McDermott did absolutely not edge that ball... that was the WORST decision in cricketing history. Bah.

But hey, luckily we all got over that, and the Windies now suck hey ;)

Langer is a champ... well over 1300 runs for the season now. Go you good thing :)

Do you remember the 1st test between the West Indies and Australia in Brisbane in 1992/93 when Brian Lara, on about 58 or so at the time, was "stumped" by Ian Healy when he'd dropped the ball the just punched the stumps with his empty glove?

Well the last day of the test match was like looking at a car crash. It was horrible watching Pakistan bat but yet compelling viewing to see wether McGrath could get all 10.

Now on to the time honoured Boxing day test, as a Melb Boy it is one of the biggest drinking days in the year. And this year will be no different, so if any bluelighters are around myself and fair few others will be at cricketers Arms from 9am onwards, probably in the courtyard out the back not far from the bar, come say hello.

give that man a new!

it musta been all the hickory sauce he's been drinking!

20/20 cricket Sydney.

For anyone who is in Sydney the N.S.W state sqaud will be playing a game of 20/20 cricket from 5 pm at Hurstville oval today. Admission is free.

I think i might head down and check this game out. I'm still not convinced we need an even shorter format of the game but at the same time if it can bring more people to the game at a state level then i can see why the state cricket boards might want to embrace it.

i have a question for aussie cricket fans.

here in the uk, the powers that be have signed a deal which means that as of the ashes, NO cricket will be shown on free-to-air tv - not even england games.

this means that for your average british household to watch the cricket, they will have to subscribe to sky digital, and sign up to a package that includes the sport channels. such a package would end up costing something around £40 - i.e., well over AUS$100 - per month.

now, as an aussie living in the uk i'm thrilled. thrilled because as far as i can tell, this will only serve to weaken the english game for generations to come :D

seriously tho, my question is this:

what do you think the reaction would be in australia if they took cricket off free-to-air channels?

i imagine it would be something akin to a bloody, prolonged, violent revolution...

^^
That's what they're doing for the net Ashes series. It's highly unlikely we'll be seeing any of it on fre-to-air television.

As for cricket during the aussie summer that won't be happening anytmime soon. It's too good for ratings.
