Lets play the remember game ..
1992/93, playing against the West Indies ... Bishop, Walsh, Ambrose and Benjamin fired up in the final innings (target 200?).
Langer made 50 from almost 200 balls ... a gutsy innings if ever i've seen one. Wickets were falling left right and centre and the Windies were aiming for the ribcage. Batting with Tim May who made 30 something, Langer was looking good and becoming everyone's new favourite batsman. However, he played a (very poor) pull shot and was caught, cracking under the intense pressure of the great West Indians.
McDermott comes to the crease and it looks all over, but he was so fucken brave. I cheered every ball he faced. He and Tim May put on 50 for the final wicket before McDermott 'top edged' ('helmeted') Walsh to Mr Junior Murray, just 1 run short of the target!
So, my questions to everyone ... did McDermott edge it? .. and was there more pressure on Langers gritty half-century or his awesome 181 today?
Skip to Australia hosting South Africa at the SCG in 1993/1994 ... we are chasing 117 in the 4th innings and i think we got to about 1 for 50 before de Viliers induced an almighty collapse. Martyn comes in at 7 as Tim May had been sent in earlier as a night watchman. In the darkest 2 hours of his test career to date, Martyn struggled to put bat on ball adding just 6 runs including a boundary. Once again Craig McDermott is almost the hero, scoring 30 runs from as many balls to keep the scoreboard moving and the hope of victory alive.
We need about 10 more runs to win and just as you are thinking 'fuck, it would be nice if Martyn would hit the ball or at least run a bye or something' ... he has a rush of blood and spoons a simple catch to cover, leaving McDermott stranded in disbelief. Pigeon comes to the crease and is knocked over by de Villiers almost immediately. Martyn probably shouldered the blame unfairly and his personal calamity somewhat over-shadowed what was truly an amazing spell of bolwing by de Villiers.
My question ... Does this ghost still haunt Martyn and is it the main reason for the 4 years he spent in cricketing obscurity after this incident?
back on 'topic' -
Clarke is too low in the order. there was WAY too much pressure on him today and he choked. When he came to the crease, his body language wasn't the same as when he strides out at 3/250 ... we had a lot of different number 6's before Steve Waugh claimed that position as his own and he proved that it is vitally important to have a trust-worthy number 6 that can do the job under pressure and batting with the tail.
At our (recent) peak, an in-form Waugh and unstoppable Gilchrist was the backbone of our innings, the top 5 established the 400+ score and Waugh and Gilly made it 600 to kill the game in the first two days. Gilchrist could be in the side on batting alone, but he shouldnt have to shoulder too much pressure in a 'rescue mission' situation. Today we were lucky that Langer is the man, but i fear that we need to sort out this number 6 position sooner rather than later.
For obvious reasons Martyn can't bat at 6 (doesnt he average about 20 in that position?), Clarke is too young (imho) and Lehmann is too much of a wildcat. Ponting played number 6 back in the old days, but that was back when it was considered as the 'last batting position' as opposed to 'the anchor'. Ponting is an established first-drop now though and i think that suits him very well. Who can fill the boots of old mate Tugga then? Surely nobody, but Katich is probably the best option in my opinion.
I think the selectors are happy with Martyn at the moment and Lehmann will play for as long as he plays for, batting at 5. Clarke will stay at number 6 until Lehmann retires and then Katich will most probably come into the side, pushing Clarke up a spot to number 5.
I kinda hoped they would exclude Warne in favour of Lee for the Perth Test ... fuck i'd love to see Mcgrath, Gillespie, Kasprowicz and Lee in the same side ... not too sure i liked Pontings idea though...
We won't lose this test match. I can't believe we posted 350 after the start we made .. good work lads. you are truly unstoppable.
