^^^ - There is no fair answer to that question. They've both performed outstandingly. If Symonds can show Katich's consistency, then he deserves a spot in the team as he gives Ponting a genuine all-rounder.

The question is... can he be as consistent as Katich?

Warnie - CHamp, not smart, but a champ. Regardless of the stupid shit he has done.
Boofa - Representing Australia beautifully, not only by tonning up but also by sucking down a quick dart up on the balcony before heading down to field. What a pisser, some beautiful footage of the great man sucking on a cigarette on the balcony and just finishing it off walking down the steps and heading out to the field. Gotta love elite athletes!!

stumps day 3 second test. aussies lead by 229 runs.

Martyn 104* has a huge job to do tommorow imo. He is high in confidence I think and it would be great to see him post a big knock. Simmo will be looking to firm his place in the side aswell. With 2 days to play, i'd say we'd be looking at posting 400+ *hopefully* and leave them 1 day and a bit to chase on a crumbly pitch. I was worried about Ponting yesterday, but I assume if he batted today, he must be allright.

I'm fucking pleased for Martyn :) 2 Centuries in as many tests....and it's always great to see Gillie notch up a great knock...esp after some criticism/form slumping....

Aust will win this test i believe.....*touches wood* :)

Does the Kandy pitch crumble, historically speaking? I thought it was their equivalent of the WACA - good to send people in on, then it calms down for a few days.

Yeah - much depends on Martyn today. I love watching him play, he's a beautiful batsman, but I can't remember the last time he played a really pivotal role in a victory... definitely been a while, anyway.

Cool 8)

Talk about delicately poised.

Apparently the pitch is getting flatter and better to bat on the further in we get. Oh and there is 3 days left Diegoblunt... not 2. Given that I think we're going to need a pretty mammoth score before we consider ourselves safe.

Martyn is in good form but he's been out there a while. Symonds has no history as a test batsman and what we need now is a campaigner who will grind out a big innings... not some one day specialist who tries to score at a run a ball.

And don't forget that once a wicket falls we're into the tail.

It's situations like these that we really need a proven quality test batsman to hunker down one end and nurse the tail to a big 2nd innings lead if need be. Someone like Katich. I don't really think Symonds is the man for the job...

Hope he proves me wrong. :\

Two. Two days left. Play on day 3 was adjourned a bit after lunch due to rain, wasn't it?

Here's hoping Symonds *is* the man for the job - he changed his whole game once before (from slugger to true one-day batting all-rounder), and I wouldn't put it past him to do it again.

I agree though - on paper, you'd want Katich in right now.

I'm as much a fan of Katich as you all seems to be too....however, i think Symonds is well up to the task.....even tho most of the time he tends to score very quick, it is usually well mesured....ones, twos, some fours, the occasional 6. Is his style of play really that different to Gilchrist? And we all know how much he is loved in the team and looked upon as a saviour around the 6-7 mark in the lineup....Katich is great too, but I think Symonds will be up to the job. *touches wood again* =D

Well lo and behold. Another mediocre innings from Symonds exposes the tail while Martyn is on fire on 140.

Murali will rip through our lower order like a hot samurai sword through butter stranding Martyn no doubt.

Symonds test scores thus far have been 0, 24, 6 and 23. Meanwhile Katich is carrying the drinks with a test average of 65.

Meh, one day sloggers and test batsmen are two different breeds. The selectors shouldn't confuse the two.

Our bowlers have a big task now.

well indeedy talk about delicately poised, its the end of day 4 with the Sri Lankans on 7 for 301 or so... needing another 50 or so runs to win the game...

Its going to be a very interesting final day...

CB :)

eh they'll do it. 50 runs is not a lot and Vaas is in good batting form. They'll milk em all in the end.

Must agree, I think the sri lankans will walk it in on the last day. Only 50 runs required and 3 wickets in hand. I guess anything is possible but the pitch is playing fairly well in terms of batting. Its not very bouncy even though a few batsmen have been hit with bouncers (anyone see big kasper's spell of fast short pitched bowling?). Also the pitch seems to be turning quite slowly, Warnie is getting some spin on the ball but it is very slow turning enabling the batsmen to read it off the pitch if need be. McGill seems to be getting some quicker turn off the deck but then again he is bowling a touch quicker than warnie and turns it a bit more than warnie anyway.
Hopefully we can get the last 3 wickets before they knock up 50 odd runs. Will have to get Vaas out quickly to have any chance.

Oh thank you god for this victory that we receive today!

27 runs was all that was in it in the end. At one stage they only needed another 32 with all 3 wickets remaining in hand.

Too close if you ask me.

Warney only needs another 8 wickets to match Walsh's record. Which he could conceivably achieve and pass in the 3rd test.

Murali needs another 14. So he won't be doing it in this series.

Series Highlights thus far:

Shane Warne is back (all hail the king!)

The Symonds experiment failed

Katich should have cemented his place in the test side now on the basis of Symonds performance.

Sri Lanka are a one trick pony that overly rely on Murali

Pitch Doctoring can backfire on you.
