The Official Beginners DJing Thread

im a fan of the trusty fruityloops, cheap, easy to learn nd covers all grounds for me personally.... in saying that i consider my self very very bellow begginer level

FL Studio and Cubase. Briefly got in to Reason as well, but found a lot of it unnecessary.

Also I agree with marshmellow, the piano roll in FL Studio is brilliant (especially the 9.6 beta), I wish other DAWs would take the hint.

logic for me. but i have to admit that the only other's i've tried are reason (horrible imho) and ableton.

@marsmellow
phoscyon also does a very decent job of emulating a 303 (with devilfish mod). i use both phoscyon and abl2 for acidlines cause i find them to complement each other nicely. when i can't get a particular sound with phoscyon, abl usually does the job nicely and vice versa.

what are some good mixers for low price

I just started learning how to mix, so right now all I have is a program for my computer. Ive made a couple mixes already but the transitions are kinda sloppy cause I dont know where the next song is at so sometimes ill start bringing it in to early or to late :\

So I was wondering what are some good mixers that are some what cheap and simple for a begginer, and where I can plug headphones in to know when to cue the upcoming song.

Also what programs do some of you use? Right now im using mixxx cause it was free, but im looking to get traktor hopefully soon. What other good ones are out there?

Thanks ahead of time :)

i heard good stuff about m-audio products in the low price bracket, thinking of grabbing one myself, well, a three channel one anyway..

I'm using a korg nanokontrol right now for dj'ing and production. It was 50$. 9 faders, 9 knobs. It gets the job done. For headphones you'll either have to get a mixer that lets you do that, or a sound card with multiple audio outs. For software I use Ableton & Reason.

Wait...you don't have decks

Traktor is half price at the NI store I think right about now. f

are you aware if the new traktor only midi traktor sv4 includes the full version of traktor or not....? I think it might even include a special edition just for the new midi... im saving my ass off to get it right now... I believe the cheapest you can acquire it for is 800 dollars but it has about 30x as many features as my last midi controller which cost 200 bucks... If you want to go ultra cheap the numark total control w/ the DJ-IO using traktor is about 275 dollar setup including everything software, and extra soundcard.

OP check out the traktor sv4 demo videos by some of the bigger DJ's they let try it out... its amazing some of the shit they came up on the fly just using recorded samples, he made a whole new song. If you are srious abotu dj'ing and want any easy midi as well as easy software (traktor) to learn on. I really suggest you save and get it... Iwouldnt be suprised if we saw some bigger name DJs using it in live sets.... Ithink Carl Cox has done some shows using it actually... and he worships traktor so that doesnt shock me. Ok im rambling, sorry.

^^^
Yeah im pretty serious about it, or at least for now cause I need something to keep me busy so all I do now is mix or at least try to haha Ive been thinking about saving up so we'll see how much money I can get lol

Really looking to get traktor so hope that happens soon :)

thanks for letting me know this, I am eagerly trying to save and purchase the sv4 ^ ^

I think its around 850 but it seems totally worth it as long as its as durable as it appears.... There is a beginners DJ thread and it might have some useful info for you as well OP.
