The Official 2008 NHL Playoffs Thread

It was a good call..

it was a fabulous call...IN BIZARRO WORLD.

seriously...it must be the worst thing in the world to go into a series with the top seed, get every call imaginable from the refs, and the still lose - at home!

:)

at least, unlike others, you didn't try and argue against the highstick goal that same game.

you're just a habs baiter. :D

what's done is done, i thought there was no way in hell the flyers would beat the habs. hell, in my opinion, the habs play a better brand of hockey and are a better unit. in the end i suppose you could place the blame on the huet trade as price didnt prove to be a playoff ready goaltender, but he was alright. biron played a better series. price will be ready next season since after all, he's got a year to be their number 1. he'll deal with the pressure as it comes.

im still amongst those who believe that the pens will beat the flyers though. it almost seems as though the world will implode if they dont. i dont even believe this is a series that will come down to goaltending. i dont think its gonna get that far. the pens have more weapons realistically, but should they be held to modest terms and it DOES come down to the keepers. i believe MAF is better than biron.

the sharks though... hmmmm how sad it is to see them gone. detroit should wipe the floor with dallas. turco is pretty solid in the net, but when he's facing as powerful an offensive machine as that of the red wings with their shoot first ask questions later style... he's not gonna be able to give up any rebounds and the dallas defense is gonna have to play tough in front of their crease because the red wings can get goals any way they need them and certainly they arent afraid to be sitting ducks in front of their own shooters in order to get the last second deflection into the goal. watch the big boys stand in front of turco.

pens vs red wings for the final.

Motherfuckin Red Wings Bitchessssssssssss!!!!!!!!!1 Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I couldn't believe they did a "Let's go Flyers" chant at that cop's funeral. /off topic

i didnt hear about that. what happened???

and pharcyde... me and my buddy have been saying that a wings/pens final would be amazing. its the most plausible match up at this point and quite frankly, i'd like to see it. :D

The cop was a die hard Flyers fan so one of his colleagues did it in his memory.

And the Pens didn't outplay the Flyers like Montreal did. We had a tough time skating with the Habs, not so with Pitt. We lost due to our own mistakes....and on top of that many players were quiet for the Flyers. I'd expect to see players like Carter, Lupul, and Upshall step it up next game. Flyers won both prior series after they lost the 1st game.

^ absolutely right we are. :D

that's alright about the cop then (not alright that he died obviously). i was assuming it was done in a hijacking his funeral way which would have been absolutely HORRID, but knowing the cop was a die hard (no pun intended) flyers fan... its understandable and actually kinda neat. i would have probably gotten goosebumps if i saw it. it sounds like a feel good moment (though bittersweet no doubt). :)

speaking of the flyers, they just dropped game two. pens lead the series 2-0. detroit over dallas 2-0 right now as well.

not that detroits talent pool is shallow by any means, but with the way franzen has stepped up this postseason, its almost surprising that they played as well as they did without him in game 2. he's been an absolute staple to their offense to this point.

hey sticky green... i suppose this round is making up for me being so wrong about the last round. :D

pens and wings are both leading their series' 3-0 now.

STFU n00b :X

jk :(

I am disappointed in the Flyers' play. No one is stepping up except Richards. The Flyers are giving up the blue line and dropping 3 players deep THREE!!! No one is challenging the puck, not even the forward. Something drastic has to happen to turn this thing around......They won 4 straight against the Habs, so I am not counting them out......but I am not muppint any more money on them to win the cup. I locked them in at 30:1 before the palyoffs started. It looked like a hell of a move before the Conference Finals started.

It's OK tho. I am not disappointed in them, on the whole, if they lose next game. They went from worst to top 4, and they are without their top 2 defensemen, as well as Gagne. Plus they have some great young talent in the Phantoms and last year's #2 overall pick. The future looks really bright even if this is not their year.

true. before this season began i thought they made some great moves to acquire a pretty good team actually, then on almost a nightly basis that good team showed its flaws. it became less and less apparent what they were planning to do about it, but then they came through, made the playoffs and actually played some pretty good hockey up to this point, but now they're playing scared of the pens' offense and the penguins are taking advantage of that. if you play three back on this penguins team, they'll drive on em every time and with the passers and playmakers they've got on their front lines they'll penetrate.

the flyers made the habs adapt to their game, but now they're adapting to the penguins game. i think its the biggest difference from the last series to this series. they want it, they're just not going about getting it the right way.

and i'll feel compassion for you if they lose, i'll just enjoy the cup finals more if they do. :D

come on man... penguins and red wings??? would that not be a good series??? :)

Good, but I proably won't watch it. I may catch 1 game early, and probably each game when there is the opportunity to close it out.....but back to the Flyers.

I'll give you another reason why it's not so bad they lose. I was a fan of Umberger and Carter's play, even tho it was inconsistant at times. If they went all the way and shined, there would be no way we can afford them. Both are RFAs at the end of the season and I'd like to see both of them back. I guess it's not so bad tho even if we lose 1, cause what did the Ducks get from the Oilers for Penner? A 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round draft pick? Lupul is signed thru next year and is also restricted.

Here's a great, well maintained website for the hockey fan: http://www.nhlscap.com/

So many of our youngsters are restricted, but it all depends on how much the cap goes up next year. Plus the Flyers did a great job structuring their payroll with Hartnell and Briere are both regressive from here on out = more room each season. I just can't wait till Hatcher is gone, and Gauthier is playing poorly for the Phantoms (0 points -7 in the AHL playoffs). I'm not sure if he counts towards the cap tho when he plays for the Phantoms, I'm pretty sure not. They should just let Hatcher finish his career in the AHL.....But we need some free agent D men fast. I think we will draft D in the 1st and 2nd rounds this year.

Free agents I like:
Brian Campbell
Michael Rozsival
Wade Redden
Mark Streit
Jim VanDermeer
Dick Tarnstrom

actually.....after reading that webpage, it seems that the players' average annual salary is what counts towards the cap, not the actual salary? can anyone verify?

if theres one thing that's somewhat of a gray area for me its contracts and salary caps. i know the cap is set at 44million, but i dont think the players average annual salary is taken into consideration, but more they're given specific contracts with yearly breakdowns monetarily maybe? i dont remember i could be talking out my ass right now, but hey... cant know everything? :D

Just take a look at the link i posted and give me your opinion. I thought the yearly breakdown is what counted, but then you click on the "player cap numbers" it breaks each players' salary into an average yearly number and counts that towards the team cap. That's why I asked for clarification.

omg, brain... hurt. its like... too many numbers and words.

i've never been a patient mathematician and under certain circumstances its tough to get my eyes on track. i'll tell you though, the one thing that still confuses me to this day is the math invovled in contracts. i know by now i should know more about that shit, but my god... i know averages of what people make and what not and i know about how much a good player costs, etc, but i'll be damned to figure out the formula to determine cap space and yada yada yada. not in this state. :D

Extension granted ;) For what it's worth, I'm up at 6am only because I had too much to drink and couldn't get back to sleep. Shots of crown will do that to ya.

word!

this is where i go to find salaries and what not.

the hockey news salaries.

yet still as i said, the whole "upper limit charge" and some of that stuff baffles me. im pretty sure its basically the yearly averages that are counted towards the yearly salary cap, but then again like i was saying earlier, some contracts list different earnings from year to year which is why i would say that players are given a certain amount per year and that amount is what would count towards the cap.

fuck it man, the front office can take care of all that math and logistics, i just watch the game and analyze it. i know enough to know who we should look at and try to snag during the off season based on how much money we have to spend etc, but if it comes to pushing pennies, im out. :D

i know with our trade of fedorov and foote, we have PLENTY of space to make a major acquisition and i fully intend to see an impact player or two on our roster next season to help nash and zherdev to get more offense going. our defense is pretty solid. i know that howson's specifically looking to get 2 centers and 3 defensemen with the potential to get a winger. we definitely need a couple top centers, but i dont see the need to pick up as much defense as he wants. tarnstrom is likely going back on the market so we'll want to fill his spot.

BUT... as for the playoffs, both sweeps are no longer happening. :( good for your boys sticky! :D i still think these series' are both over though. hehe.
