the official 08-09 NFL thread

well, lets not forget the early season shellacking the Eagles gave the Steelers.

and please, for the love of the football gods, lets do away with these "nobody respects us" and "against all odds" cliches that some fans around Arizona are using. Arizona, despite bumbling into the playoffs like Joe Namath plus a bottle of whiskey, looks mighty sharp. their duo of Boldin and Fitzgerald could be the best WR duo in the NFL. throw in Michigan's product Steve Breaston and is it the best trio? Fitz could turn out better than Jerry Rice (prepares to duck flames).

the Arizona Cardinals defense has been the surprise this year in the NFL playoffs. who knew they could stop Westrbook so easily (granted he did look tired) and essentially make fun of Jake Iwannagohomme.

question: after this SB, with a Cards win or no win, do you think we will see Edge and Boldin in Cards jerseys? the answer is most likely not. and did anybody see Anquan Boldin's meltdown during the Philly game? with minutes left to go, he was on the sideline jawing at the offensive co-ordinator, then he went inside to the locker room to bypass the team celebrations. this much tells you all about his character.

obviously this SB will highlight the flashy Cards offense against the gaudy Steelers defense. which Cards team will show up? the playoffs Cards or the team that gave up in the snow against a mediocre New England team?

"Mediocre" New Engand team?

You mean the one that went 11-5 despite having a difficult schedule and despite playing without the second most valuable player in the league due to injury?

What would they have had to do for you to consider them non-mediocre?

Go 16-0?

Oh yeah - they just did that last season.

Axl, I sincerely congratulate you that your favorite team is in the Super Bowl, but with that said, let's not get crazy by calling the team that is ALREADY the Vegas favorite to win Super Bowl XLIV (that would be the Patriots, by the way) "mediocre."

I knew I was going to get some heat from that :) and I am ready to back up my claim. I give New England props, they had a winning season despite losing their franchise QB. and Matt Cassel put up some prime numbers (only against the more mediocre defenses, albeit) and he should end up as a starting QB under a new team whenever he can be gone from the Patriots.

however, they failed brilliantly at winning the very very subpar AFC East. their defense is getting old fast. re: next season favorites. while I am not one of the sports minds that thinks that Tom Brady will never be Tom Brady again, I think that it will take him a couple games at best to half a season at worst to get back into his usual groove.

they were the 3rd best team in perhaps the second worst AFC conference, my good friend LL, and that is why I label their attempt at success this year as mediocre.

I am awaiting your rebuttal, as always. while we never seem to agree often on sports I enjoy the banter and what you bring to S&G.

thanks for the congrats, I am very proud to bleed black and gold now more than ever. it seems that the Rooneys just put the organization in a spot to win year after year. it would be scary to think how good Pittsburgh would be with a solid O-line, dontcha think?

vegas odds drive action, they do not predict winners. 8(

Agreed.

But in THIS case, the Patriots opening at 14-1 to win NEXT YEAR'S Super Bowl, and then got HAMMERED down to 8-1 almost immediately.

No - that doesn't mean that the Patriots will necessary win next year's Super Bowl.

But a LOT of pople with a LOT of money and a LOT of experience almost simultaneously decided that Vegas was WRONG on setting THIS particular line, and acted accordingly.

yeah, great interview.

the best question, from a great sports journalist in Steven Smith was:

"Pacman, why do you like strip clubs so much?"

needless to say, it looks like Hines Ward will play. again, that is one tough dude.

Steven Smith: "Pacman, why do you like strip clubs so much?"

Pacman: "Because Steven...I'm lookin' for BOOTY!"

Argh!

That you can remember! Keep in mind, we won 4 before you were probably even born. Not all of them were glamorous, but the rings still speak volumes ;)

Well, that's what you get for ASSUMING, Kid!

Not only was I alive for all four, I lost some of my hard-earned Jewface allowance betting on my Cowboys against them in two of them!

Yes, I still hold a grudge about 35-31.

Where have you gone, Classiest Coach In The History Of Sports, Mr. Tom Landry?!!!!

Chuck Noll > Tom "dirty" Laundry

the man is probably the best coach ever in the NFL. if I had to compile a list, it would probably be something like this:

1) Lombardi
2) Noll
3) Walsh
4) Belicheck
5) Gibbs

it wasn't Lombardi's fault he coached pre-SB. Belicheat is the only active coach so he can go up or down, honestly if I can be so bold to predict, I think that he is going to go way down. Gibbs's SB record speaks for itself. Noll is the best modern coach of all-time, winning an unprecedented 4 SBs with his Super Steelers.

au-contraire, LL, I believe that this SB is one of the most exciting ever and is wrought with many great storylines. the once downtrodden Cards franchise in the Big Game, the Steelers vying for their 6th Super Bowl, and Ken Whisenhut and Ben Grimm's ties to Pittsburgh are just the most glaringly obvious.

but, as some who fell for the Tom Brady, Phillip Rivers, and Peyton Manning smoke and mirrors, it is no surprise why you feel this way. to think, such a seasoned fan should know better.

so many haters now that the steelers are on the prowl....so sad, too bad. btw obama sez the steelers are going to win, so stick that in your pipe and smoke it!

the First Fan, President Barack Obama, is backing the Steelers. should be a good one. I wish I had my cable back so I could throw an appropriate Super Bowl party and have plenty Jimson Weed on hand. but it looks like it is going to be the bar for me. thankfully, here in Central Ohio every other bar is a Steelers bar.
