the objectification of women in The Sun's Page 3 (UK)

as a young American male, I was not aware of the shockingly obscene objectification of women in the UK's most widely read newspaper, the Sun

in Page 3 of the Sun, we are treated to an alluring picture of a topless woman making some usually inane remark on some current event. this wouldn't be as offensive if found in what the Brits call a "lad mag" (think Maxim here in the States), but this is found in what is marketed as a "family newspaper"

the Sun, which I do believe is owned by Rupert Murdoch, has been publishing this offensive Page 3 since the 1970s. Page 3 appears as an offensive relic left-behind and seemingly forgotten from ages ago, an age when women weren't perceived as equal to us men

apparently, women (and men) have had enough of Page 3, and since two years ago there has been a little campaign of protest against this. the website is found here No More Page 3.ORG

perhaps I am just an American who is still rooted in the past philosophies of my country's Puritanical beliefs, however I for once am proud of my Nation - because I know such blatant sexism could never and would never fly in my country

Don't get the word 'sexism' confused with 'nudity'

I guess I do my part in that I don't ever pay for the Sun, and I avoid clicking their links online. I think they should either get rid of it, or at least put some cute muscled guy alongside them for equality.. 8)

There have been cuties in the Brit Tabloid press ever since I can remember (that takes us back to 1948).
By the early seventies the cuties were bare-chested.
My personal view is that legislation against bare breasts would lead to the censorship of images of human nudity.
For various reasons I think that would be a retrograde step.
Although there is undoubtedly some justification for the feminist argument, it cannot be denied that are there are a lot of faith-based groups and moral majority types, who would love to have breasts banned.
Moreover covering up is not going to stop men objectivizing women sexually.

Of course not, Americans simply judge other women by how they dress, by how much weight they have lost after child birth or how good they look in a bikini compared to last year.
