there were days that went by sweetly
nights that peek like baby animals
inquisitive creatures
who always find their way
through the most prickly thistle
the deepest swamps of your mind
safely sleeping in their sheltered nests
waiting for their sign to emerge
an overheard exuberance
your cat asleep in his own embrace
the way the sun lights up the clouds
and so on
in time you find
the warm memories
feel their way through the tundra
the cuts don't feel as fresh
as the hugs
those little oases of contentment
these things that found you
in your pursuit of happiness
and all the good things that rest in you
are worth the price you paid
you can grow old like this
you can smile.
