A song from 1971, when Bob Seger was still an outspoken Detroit radical who headlined every Free John Sinclair* benefit....

They watch the news, see young men dying.
They watch them bleeding and they listen to them crying.
And if they're normal, if they can see,
They just reach out and change the channel on TV.

They're looking back, they're looking back,
Too many people looking back.

When they could vote, and end the war,
They're much too busy fitting locks upon the back door.
Give you a foxhole, a place to hide,
'Cause when the war come the cops'll be on their side.

They're looking back, they're looking back,
Too many people looking back.

*Managed the MC5 and chaired the White Panther Party (leftist revolutionaries supporting the Black Panthers); received a 10-year prison sentence in 1969 for giving an undercover cop 2 joints of marijuana; went free in 1972 after having conviction overturned by the US Supreme Court because the cops had used illegal wiretaps.

T.V on the Radio plays it muuuuuuuuch better. That being said....Saw Local H in Virginia Beach in 1994. Took home the opening bands bass player:love:. That band was Star 69. And he was divine.

The 1978 demo version of this Thin Lizzy song, for the uncensored lyrics.

Outside the window, the neon flashes in the morning light.
Down on the sidewalk, there's a woman with a problem she don't know how to fight.

She's a prostitute that is broken-down.
She softly whispers "Is there no one around?"
And no one hears the sound
As her knees give way and hit the ground.

(This is the toughest... This is the toughest... )

Like a rat in the back, the junkie opens his packet of smack.
On his arm, there's a track that he can't take back.

This junkie has had a hard day,
Nobody told him it would be like this.
He's had to score the hard way
And there's that fix he'll always miss.

(This is the toughest... This is the toughest... )

It's just another black spot
Where far too many people have died.
It's just another graveyard
And there's not too many people left here alive.

(This is the toughest... This is the toughest... )

On the corner is a miner with a tattoo on his right arm.
It's there as a constant reminder of Grievous Bodily Harm.
Outside the window, the neon is still flashing in the morning light.
Down along the sidewalk, that woman's dead: gave up without a fight.

All across the city, no one could understand.
All across the city, no one gives a damn!

(This is the toughest... This is the toughest... )

Are you tough enough?
Are you rough enough?
Can you take that stuff?
Can you bluff enough?

Mark Lanegan -- Can't Come Down (2003)

Moses, he stood on the mountain.
The Devil made it thunder and rain.
Girl, I ain't afraid of temptation.
No, I ain't afraid of some pain.
Watching little doll, she just come running,
Running straight away.
Straight to me, I got sweet nothing
And only myself to blame.

I don't know why I just keep running,
Don't know why I can't come down.

Off a classic album from 1987 entitled Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To:

Feeling funny in my mind, Lord. [x3]
Oh I need it, Lord,
Amen! Amen, amen!

There's a black smoke rising, Lord.
[x3]
Right above my head,
Amen! Amen, amen!

Well I don't mind dying, Lord.
[x3]
But I'd hate to leave my mother crying,
Amen! Amen, amen!

The light brights now black and white 'Cos you took apart a picture that wasn't right
Pitch burning on a shining sheet
The only maker that you want to meet
A dying man in a living room
Whose shadow paces the floor
Who'll take you out in the open door
This is not my life
It's just a fond farewell to a friend
It's not what I'm like
It's just a fond farewell to a friend
Who couldn't get things right
A fond farewell to a friend
He said really I just want to dance
Good and evil match perfect, it's a great romance
And I can deal with some psychic pain
If it'll slow down my higher brain
Veins full of disappearing ink
Vomiting in your kitchen sink
Disconnecting from the missing link
This is not my life
It's just a fond farewell to a friend
It's not what I'm like
I'ts just a fond farewell to a friend
Who couldn't get things right
A fond farewell to a friend
I see you're leaving me
And taking up with the enemy
The cold comfort of the in-between
A little less than a human being
A little less than a happy high
A little less than a suicide
The only things that you really tried
This is not my life
It's just a fond farewell to a friend
It's not what I'm like
It's just a fond farewell to a friend
Who couldn't get things right
A fond farewell to a friend
This is not my life
It's just a fond farewell to a friend

I stumble through the wreckage, rusted from the rain
There's nothing left to salvage, no one left to blame
Among the broken mirrors I don't look the same
I'm rusted from the rain, I'm rusted from the rain

Dissect me 'til my blood runs down into the drain
My bitter heart is pumping oil into my veins
I'm nothing but a tin man, don't feel any pain
I don't feel any pain, I don't feel any pain
I'm rusted from the rain

Go on, crush me like a flower
Rusted from the rain
Come on, strip me of my power
Beat me with your chains
And if I'm the King of cowards
You're the Queen of pain
I'm rusted from the rain
I'm rusted from the rain

You hung me like a picture, now I'm just a frame
I used to be a lap dog, now I'm just a stray
Shackled in a graveyard, left here to decay
Left here to decay, left here to decay
I'm rusted from the rain

Go on, crush me like a flower
Rusted from the rain
Come on, strip me of my power
Beat me with your chains
And if I'm the King of cowards
You're the Queen of pain
I'm rusted from the rain
I'm rusted from the rain
I'm rusted from the rain

Go on, crush me like a flower
Rusted from the rain
Come on, strip me of my power
Beat me with your chains
And if I'm the King of cowards
You're the Queen of pain
I'm rusted from the rain
I'm rusted from the rain

Go on, crush me like a flower
Rusted from the rain
Come on, strip me of my power
Beat me with your chains
And if I'm the King of cowards
You're the Queen of pain
I'm rusted from the rain
I'm rusted from the rain

Oh, the sun will shine again
I'm rusted from the rain
I'm rusted from the rain
Oh, the sun will shine again
I'm rusted from the rain

Someone found the future as a statue in a fountain
At attention, looking backward in a pool of water
Wishes with a blue songbird on his shoulder
Who keeps singing over everything
Everything means nothing to me
Everything means nothing to me
Everything means nothing to me
I picked up the song and found my picture in the paper
The reflection in the water showed an iron man still trying to salute
People from a time when he was everything he's supposed to be
Everything means nothing to me
Everything means nothing to me
Everything means nothing to me
Everything means nothing to me
