Travel The MEGA Travel Thread!

The parks are always free if you get there before 8am :)

Im headed to Yosemite tomorrow, hiking mt hoffman. ive done most of the high country hikes in yosemite, yet ive never managed to do this one.

hiked the mt. tam steep ravine at the weekend. it's accessible and really beautiful:

Steep Ravine is gorgeous, and then if you take Dipsea rather than finishing Steep Ravine the views of the ocean are even better.

Oh my word, completeing a nice steep hike with views of an ocean would be pretty overwhelming. I still get excited just heading up over the boardwalk in my hometown.

Hiking, particularly solo hiking, has been one of my favorite activities since childhood. Vigorous exercise combined with a voracious appetite for knowledge of one's environment equals complete exhalation for me.

As a woman, I'm not really comfortable with solo hikes. I head to a local state park and do a baby hike and I love that, though. I have fears of bears, being bitten by a snake, spraining my ankle, or much worse things if hiking a mountain by myself, though.

And, I finally got some kinks worked out with my blasted PB account.

Bear Mountain, NY
This was one of my favorite places while growing up. I have the fondest memories of it: Hessian Lake, ice skating, and even just driving up the mountain. Nostalgia is so bittersweet for me. Also, this section of the trail, completed in 1923 is the oldest part of the Appalachian Trail. This was my first time on it.:D:D:D

My mom at the top. She had broken both of her feet not too long ago. She thought she was going to sit and read while I went out walking in the woods. But, being the mommy that is, she joined me to keep me safe. In her fucking Keds. She's kind of a tough guy. (why would you even wear 3-D glasses outside?! And they're clearly far too large.)

Thats fuckin sweet man, take photos of the whole journey, not just the climb.

If you want to laser things from the top you need a really high quality one, a $10 laser pen aint gonna cut it.

it's 100 or 200mW, i just want to point at things and stuff. Yeah will do, it's first time actually travelling somewhere not to just get fucked so should be nice

turns out good luck i got my back injury in nepal. the mate i would have gone to the everest region with went ahead and got lost in knee deep snow trying to cross cho la pass. by a weird miracle, he encountered a trekker coming the other way who showed him how he was several hours away from his destination rather than the couple hours he though. being late afternoon, he had to turn back, if he hadn't he'd have been outside in extremely dangerous conditions over night.

been in touch with my trekking buddies, and they have some amazing photography which puts my iphone pics to shame. will share some shortly, but we also intend to make a website of the trip. i'm still editing vids together.

first looks from the trip.

I watched a video of some climbers in patagonia recently, very close to where those pics are taken I think. Very very cool.

much of that is familiar. they're clearly staying in el chalten. at about 8:30 they mention lago torre. here's a couple of pics from the day we hiked up to the lake at the base:

I'm planning on hiking the Appalachian Trail this year starting at the southern end around April 16th or so and making my way north over the course of 5-6 months. I'm quitting my current job next week and going back home to NC and I don't think I'll get another chance to attempt this for some time.

Any of you guys ever do a long term hike like that? I'm no stranger to hiking, camping, or the woods in general but I've never attempted a hike that is this long before. I'm really looking forward to it.

Ive fantasized about doing the PCT, which is basically the west coast version of that, but no, never done anything like it.

Good luck!

No, but best of luck. I've often wonder what effect such a lengthy break from the everyday busywork of society would have. A positive one, no doubt.

May the spirit of Ralph Waldo Emerson be with you.

Arci, you're in Colorado now, right? I'm jealous as fuck, that's gorgeous.

I hiked Mt. Diablo to North Peak yesterday but sadly there's way too much air pollution to see a lot. Apparently you can see Mt. Lassen, The Farallons, and even Half Dome from the top but that wasn't happening yesterday.

A friend hiked PCT last year and took a leave of absence from his Cisco job. Said it was the best decision he ever made and gave him some new found perspective on work and life.
