Smoking weed

Scoring a half-gram of marijuana for $10 might seem like a bargain. But that $10 adds up. Over the course of 60 years, that nightly joint will cost you $219,000.

Marijuana also has direct and indirect side effects, with nearly 10 percent of users become addicts, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Drinking too much booze

Consuming three drinks a day might not seem that extreme. But if those three drinks cost $4 each, then you'll be spending $263,000 over the course of 60 years.

Men who consume at least three drinks per day up their chances of dying from any type of cancer by 41 percent. For women who drink two or more drinks per day, they increase their risk of dying from cancer by 20 percent.

We'll leave you to speculate on the other downsides of drinking too much.

Hilarious. I'm sure every habitual marijuana user buys their supply in overpriced half grams.

My first thought exactly! Who buys a dime bag?! lol Every habitual user buys as much as they can afford at a time to stock up since the more you buy the better the bargain. Not to mention the ppl selling dimes usually will seed and stem ya

I was just thinking, who buys overpriced dime bags? Like even if its kush i wouldn't spend $10 for a dime bag. I might as well get a half quarter for X dollars (sorry pricing isn't allowed right?). But that X dollars is a better deal than $10 for a half gram.

The sad thing is, I know people who actually do the latter (pay $4 a drink.. and drink all night).

I wonder why it's accepted to do that and 'have a good time', but not smoke comparatively cheap cannabis.

smoking weed is way cheaper than drinking... if you don't factor in food for the munchies.

ratio for weed to drinking for me would be 5 months of moderate with occasional binge use of pot is the same price as 5 nights of drinking alot, but not to excess.

^ I made my own internet.

I don't understand why the columnist continued to use the 60 year comparison. A lot of those things, once added up after 60 years of consumption, don't actually seem like they've broken your bank THAT hard in the end.

I smoke weed every day and drink alcohol most days, I never, ever, ever pay that much money for either one. I brew my own alcohol, so I pay less than 5 dollars per liter bottle for very high quality wines and ciders. Can't grow weed but that would cut costs a lot too. Anyway, the money I do spend on weed and booze is money well spent as far as I'm concerned.

I don't see why smoking weed, drinking in moderation, watching porn, drinking a latte in the morning or drinking bottled water are bad habits either, as the article declares but barely explains. Stupid article is stupid.

The article doesn't seem to mention that you don't take money with you when you die.

What's wrong with living a little and splurging? I don't see why everyone should just quit drinking lattes or smoking weed because it will save them money in their lifetime. This isn't to say blow all of your money but if smoking weed is how you wind down in the evening and you can afford it, what's the problem?

i always worry that I might get so stoned I raped and murder everyone in my village. But alas I generally just end up eating peanut butter with a spoon.

Also most ppl arent going to the bar 7 days a week and if they are theyre gettin more then 4 drinks lol or coming w their own bottle of something

sorry that we're bashing your article, it just doesnt add up money wise but im sure if we all calculated how much was spent on drugs itd be a HELL of a lot

Since when is 0,5g for 10$ a bargain? That's pretty expensive weed imo ..

To be fair to the article though, I think it has a point and the author is genuinly trying to give good advice. I don't think he's saying "Don't buy drugs because you'll have more money that way" but rather "Reflect a little on the small purchases and costs you make because they might end up costing you more than you actually realize". There's alot more advice in there than just about drugs or drinking.

Who here is a pack a day smoker like myself? That's money I wish I still had. But being on probation limits my "outlets" of stress.

I mean, it's a women's lifestyle blog, whose top story is about Kristen Stewart. It can't be much of a shock that they're not accurate about drug prices.

Here's a clue: they use the metric system to talk about American marijuana. When was the last time you asked your US dealer for 28 grams?

(not that the stubborn dominance of English units is anything to be proud of)
