You use heroin? Are you an unemployed thief? Isn't that a gutter drug?
Heroin, if made accessible through free market practise - would be no worse than alcohol or tobacco. I use heroin almost daily, and given the fortunate opportunity to acquire it at a very good price - have seen exactly "what it can do" readily available to an individual. I'm a full time University student with a well paying part time job, who doesn't need student loans. I still have money left over to go out for nice dinners with friends, and simply to function. The only reason this drug ruins people's lives at current state is that it is so bloody expensive to keep up with. Imagine if cigarettes were running 75$ a package through your local dealer. Sure many would have the willpower to drop it, but all of those select few would of course to fuck themselves up in its addiction. Hell, if I didn't get my H supply at a decent price, I know I'd simply drop it - but there always are those select few who can't. Word of advice - if you're not getting it much cheaper than street price DON'T DO IT
...and at the same time, heroin can be seen as safer than tobacco on many levels - ie) you don't die of lung cancer. Of course, no one dies of a short term cigarette overdose, as it's near impossible - but those who do die from injecting too much really do need the institutional education legalization would bring. There are always those select few who seem to fuck the norm around, which is a shame
Sorry if I picked a hackneyed topic, btw. Even if this has been seen here, I'd like to see live discussion on the topic

I agree, i think all drugs whould be legalised in some form or other, because it reduces use and harm. I dont know if id want heroin available at the supermarket, but something like a drug park or a clinic that supplies would be an ideal way to control the drug and its harm. Psychedelics should require a psycholigical bill of health. Heroin, coke and meth should be alot cheaper and available from legit sources to improve purity and to make dosing more accurate. Pot, Mushrooms and MDMA should be available at a specialist store like a liquor store that requires R18 and a license.
There ud have reduced drug use, reduced underage use, and reduced harm to those that do use.
However most ppl who hear this will spout a bunch of unsubstantiated nonsense about legalisation increasing use or availablity. Obviously those people have never tried to buy illegal drugs; it couldnt get much more available, or popular. And drug popularity rises (and stabalises without) with prohibtion which is evident from history and countries with a legalised status.
How these facts never get to people i dont know, but ill keep spilling them out in the hope ill wake up in world where theres a rational evidence based law for drugs.

if i could get ahold of heroin at a price that would make it financially feasible to do it daily, i think it would make my life better.
but then i think of the withdrawl im going through right now after being on various opiates for about a month, heroin, morphine, and oxycodone being the most addictive, i feel that i should rethink that statement.
some people can function on heroin daily, others cant; i need to sleep 12+ hours a day if im on heroin daily, this drops to 10-12 if im on oxycodone, which i find less drowsy. i think i could handle a daily oxycodone habit.
on the other hand, if i keep my habit to once a week, and if i never actually get physically addicted, maybe twice a week, id be happy to be on heroin or oxycodone or whatever on this schedule.
i dont even know if im making any sense anymore. im going to lay down now.

The prices would stay similar, I'd think.
By the time Vice Taxes come into play and the fact that they KNOW what people already are willing to pay for them...it probably remain similar.

hmm, i always thought that HEROIN was a rather cheap drug, as many news reports and programs said this is how HEROIN dealers got so many hooked, is that H was introduced and was much cheaper than other "hard" drugs, with H opne is able to get real high on $5...then i found out what the street prices for H are and i was like WTF...i really dont know how any H addicts can maintain a daily habit, much less have the cash to buy enuff to where they get addicted..
im not sure what the abover poster means when they say an H addict cannot function daily...do u mean they cannot function because of being strung out or cannort function cuz of being fucked up??i was on OXYCONTIN for a year and a half and was able to function rather fine...
i agree, the prices for street OPIATES needs to go DOWN!!!

I doubt any1 would feel ethically comfortable taxing heroin, unless the proceeds went to abuse clinics or something. Thats presuming people ever make drugs legal, that people would think of this as bad because under the current social stigma they prolly wouldnt care about taxing addicts.
I cant even beleive they tax tobacco. Hundreds of suffering addicts, health problems. And theyre creaming it.
Besides opiates have medicinal uses, thus itd be hard to discriminate which to tax.
Theyd definately tax everything else though. Although its more likely demand and supply will dictate the price. The price of pot in amersterdam is not dirt cheap, but its pretty cheap like the equivelant of 10-15 bucks for a baggie. Bit more expensive than tobacco per weight, but still better than most places.

my polysci teacher gave me this graph back when i was in college. (i couldn't find a link to it, so i just uploaded my printed copy, then. hopefully it works...)
http://www.geocities.com/lattrommi/numbers.jpg
it came with this text, which i typed up, since the actual page is a bit mangled...if anyone can find another link to it i'd be very appreciative
WITHDRAWAL: Presence and severity of characteristic withdrawal symptoms.
REINFORCEMENT: A measure of the substance’s ability, in human and animal tests, to get users to take it again and again, and in preference to other substances.
TOLERANCE: How much of the substance is needed to satisfy increasing cravings for it, and the level of stable need that is eventually reached.
DEPENDENCE:How difficult it is for the user to quit, the relapse rate, the percentage of people who eventually become dependent, the rating
users give their own need for the substance and the degree to which the substance will be used in the face of evidence that it causes harm.
INTOXICATION: Though not usually counted as a measure of addiction in itself, the level of intoxication is associated with addiction and increases the personal and social damage a substance may do.
Source: Jack E. Henningfeld, PhD for NIDA, Reported by Philip J. Hills, New York Times, Aug. 2 (3?), 1994 “Is Nicotine Addictive? It Depends on Whose Criteria"
if you look at the graph you'll learn all sorts of neat things.
herion seems to be pretty bad in the addictive sense. but since alcohol has a worse intoxication, and a worse hangover (i'm assuming this graph is not based on long time use) it shouldn't be legal if herion isn't.
on the same note, i don't think that herion should be legalized yet. it has such a stigma attached to it. when that stigma is reduced, then it can become a priority. until then, what needs to happen is herion users need to use it more intelligently, and not become the raging junkies that the media portrays them as.
it's started with marijuana already. but marijuana has very low numbers on this graph, which makes it more tolerable to the masses. sure, not everyone has seen this, but i think it could be a great tool to help fight this drug war the US has created.
sidenote: if the link doesn't work, give me some time, if i can't get it to work, i'll try and type it up.

Hey lattrommi that is a pretty interesting graph you posted. For those who are not aware, geocities will not let you link to pictures, so while you may click on it and it says it's not available, simply copy and paste the link into your browser then hit enter and it will appear. Anyways, I'm pretty tired and want to look at it more tomorrow, but I thought it was interesting how closely nicotine falls to heroin.

I agree it should be legalized..
Heres another good reason...
Im sure you have all seen those commercials saying if you buy drugs then you're a terrorist(damn propaganda) Truth is if they would legalize and regulate it then there would be no black market for it and would help put a stop to the violence..the us learned that back during Prohibition...I supose the US is to busy getting rich off the drug war....
Good idea but they will never legalize it...

it ain't gonna happen
medical/scientific arguments consisting of pages and pages of logical even ground breaking sociological info pale in comparison to psychological social connotation.
I mean, its fuckin' retarded. And as a screenwriter, I cringe at the fact that it's requiem for a dream and trainspotting that garner these decisions.
interesting films in their own right. Innovative in film history blahblahblah, but...fuckin'
there are people that exist. and their lives aren't all about being flashy with their million frames/minute jumpcuts and blood and syringes and herion and boney selves and trendy techno-esque soundtrack.
Stealing from your parents.
There ARE intellegent hardcore drug users. Or even drug users with half a brain. and a soul.
I just hate that otherwise intellegent, open-minded people will see a syringe and automatically fear for their lives...or change their entire opinion on an individual...or assume heroin is being used.
I don't understand why their free-spirited, otherwise 'artistic' open-mindedness doesn't extend to the arena of drugs.
yes, I'm just venting now about things in my own life, but I DID have more hope about people in general until recently. I thought, like me, people would judge one on their kindness and humanity not on an activity that they partake in.
but I do still have hope. and I think that people that discriminate this way are just controlled by fear that feeds off of their ignorance. and it feels like a loophole to me --> the ignorance that leads to the fear the holds in place and moreover bolsters the ignorance that increases the fear and on and on...ad infinium...a vicious circle.
...unfortunately, I feel that most of the people in the world hold this stigma.
I mean, it's a battle to even get marijuana legalized.

Heroin, if made accessible through free market practise - would be no worse than alcohol or tobacco.
I'm sure for some people, that would be true. But I don't believe that would be true for the majority of users. At some point after using daily for a long period of time, you don't feel as if you're getting high until you're at the point where you're nodding out.
Heroin is also not all that difficult to overdose on.
And sorry, but I think it's easier to work at 100% efficiency taking smoke breaks at work as oppossed to taking shot breaks at work.
I'm a full time University student with a well paying part time job, who doesn't need student loans. I still have money left over to go out for nice dinners with friends, and simply to function. The only reason this drug ruins people's lives at current state is that it is so bloody expensive to keep up with.
One of my friends was able to maintain a job and a 4.0 college GPA for over a year. At some point, it didn't work anymore. It had nothing to do with her not being able to afford heroin. The heroin simply took over.
I assure you that while you may be able to keep it all up now, at some point you're not going to be able to use *almost* daily. If you continue using, you will end up having to shoot up *every* day, several times a day. Your life starts going downhill because you have to devote so much time to getting high.
I do actually know this one older couple where both had nice jobs and lived in a nice house and shot up daily for years. But at some point last year they both wanted to quit. They were absolutlely miserable. They both looked like complete shit. I have no idea what happened to them, but I know they had been trying to quit and were unsuccessful many times.
If you really think you can continue to use heroin for several years and be happy and successful, you are severely deluded. If you are thinking "yes, I know it will be hard, but I'll be able to quit later on", you are severely deluded.
Hell, if I didn't get my H supply at a decent price, I know I'd simply drop it
If you're physically addicted right now, you are severely deluded.
If you think you're going to keep getting heroin at a good price and use it daily and not get physically addicted, you are severely deluded.
Word of advice - if you're not getting it much cheaper than street price DON'T DO IT
Words of advice - Reguardless of what you're getting your heroin for, if you become physically addicted, at some point your life will become a complete and absolute living hell.
but those who do die from injecting too much really do need the institutional education legalization would bring.
The thing is that when you're a drug addict, especially a drug addict who's severely addicted to heroin, knowledge comes second to getting high. Infact, everything becomes second to heroin after a while.
I've never ODed myself, but I'm sure if I had continued using that I would have. It's not that I didn't know better. But I could no longer control myself. I could be thinking one thing, but my rational and logical thoughts had almost no bearing over my actions. I was often in conflict with myself. And I was at a point where I never felt high enough and I would keep shooting up and then fall asleep for several hours, wake up, shoot up and fall asleep again. I did this for days at a time on a few occassions. I knew better, but I couldn't help myself at the time.
I've watched a lot of friends go through the same thing. One of the most pathetic things I've ever seen was a really intelligent friend of mine stab himself with the same needle over 20 times in the same area just trying to hit his scarred up vein. He had to go clean, too. Because if he hadn't I'm sure he'd be dead by now.
Sorry if I picked a hackneyed topic, btw.
I think it's a good topic even if I disagree with your views.
Psychedelics should require a psycholigical bill of health.
Why? If you're mentally unhealthy, it doesn't matter what you're using, pretty much anything you're going to use recreationally is going to cause you more harm than good. And I know lots of mentally unhealthy people who use psychedelics without any incident or without worsening their condition.
Obviously if you're paranoid schizophrenic or have something similar and severe where you'll be having psychotic episodes, that's one thing. But I don't think people with more common problems like bipolar or depression or anxiety issues should be disqualified.
Heroin, coke and meth should be alot cheaper and available from legit sources to improve purity and to make dosing more accurate.
I agree. While I don't neccessarily think it'd be a good thing, I think it would definantly reduce crime and solve a lot of other problems.
Pot, Mushrooms and MDMA should be available at a specialist store like a liquor store that requires R18 and a license.
Sounds good to me.
I believe everyone should be required to have a license to use drugs. And to get the license, you'd have to do two things. 1) take a lengthy test so you are forced to read about the drugs and understand all of the consequences. 2) sign a waiver when you get your license that says you've taken a test and understand all of the consequences of drug use and cannot hold any licensed distributor responsible for any problems as a result of your drug use.
The license would also be barcoded and monitor your purchases and limit them to a certain amount so you are supplied X amount per week and your purchases per day limitted so as to keep people from distributing large quantities of the drugs to those without licenses.
However, it would be absurd not to expect people NOT to purchase drugs for people without licenses, particularly minors. Although if parents weren't such idiots these days and didn't give their kids money like it grew on trees, problems like these could be reduced.
The licenses would also be revoked indefinantly if you were convicted for certain crimes such as assault, child abuse, DUI, etc. Basically if you're harmful to others, you wouldn't have the right to use drugs until your problems were taken care of through counseling and you could show you were no longer going to be a threat to others.
However most ppl who hear this will spout a bunch of unsubstantiated nonsense about legalisation increasing use or availablity. Obviously those people have never tried to buy illegal drugs; it couldnt get much more available, or popular.
One of the funniest things you'll ever hear is someone arguing against legalization saying drug use will dramatically increase.
Right. I have NEVER in my life met, nor do I expect to meet, anyone who is going to say "I don't use drugs because they're illegal".
I'm sure there will be people who have never really considered using drugs that would consider them if they were legal. And I'm sure there will be people who do not consider them because they think they are dangerous but will be more open minded and consider them and possibly use them if legalized.
But as it stands now, the law is not keeping anyone that wants to use drugs from using drugs.
Also, if drugs were legalized I think everyone in the government oppossed to legalization would quickly change their minds once they saw the revenue generated from them.
They'd take the money and spend it on weapons to wage wars on "evil" countries like Iraq and Iran and North Korea. At the same time creating new jobs for workers to assemble the weapons.
some people can function on heroin daily, others cant; i need to sleep 12+ hours a day if im on heroin daily, this drops to 10-12 if im on oxycodone, which i find less drowsy. i think i could handle a daily oxycodone habit.
I managed an oral opiate habit for years, never really needing more than 30mgs at the most of oxycodone. I had even flirted with heroin for 6 months the first time simply snorting it with absolutely no problem. The minute I started using heroin again a second time, I was using needles - and after that first shot, it was all over.
on the other hand, if i keep my habit to once a week, and if i never actually get physically addicted, maybe twice a week, id be happy to be on heroin or oxycodone or whatever on this schedule.
That seems pretty difficult to do with heroin. As most people using it occassionally seem to end up either liking it a lot or stop caring and being using more regularly and get hooked eventually.
As for oxycodone, the tolerances people discuss always amaze me. I really don't understand the point of people taking massive doses of oxycodone trying to get high like it's heroin. It's not heroin. You should take the smallest amount possible and take it orally so you end up with a lot of benefits. You don't get sick. You don't itch to where you bleed. It last a long time. You significantly reduce the chances of getting physically addicted. I could take Percocet once or twice a week almost consecutively for years and only need between 15-30mgs. I wouldn't get blasted, but I'd still be slightly pale, be in a wonderful mood, and babble like an idiot to all my friends for hours.
I doubt any1 would feel ethically comfortable taxing heroin, unless the proceeds went to abuse clinics or something.
New York is happy to tax cigarettes by 700% knowing that a lot of people are still unable to quit.
i really dont know how any H addicts can maintain a daily habit, much less have the cash to buy enuff to where they get addicted..
The stuff I was using was pure enough that it took about a year of using it daily before I started needing more than $20 worth a day.
As for how to afford it.. I burned through $3000 in savings really fast. Then I started "borrowing" money from people without their consent and never really returning the money.
herion seems to be pretty bad in the addictive sense. but since alcohol has a worse intoxication, and a worse hangover (i'm assuming this graph is not based on long time use) it shouldn't be legal if herion isn't.
I always think I'm fine when I'm on heroin, but everyone tells me I look like complete shit and act really weird.
Im sure you have all seen those commercials saying if you buy drugs then you're a terrorist(damn propaganda) Truth is if they would legalize and regulate it then there would be no black market for it and would help put a stop to the violence..
I'd rather be supporting terrorism than the US government.

sand, it has to be done everyday or you cant function. you can go to your part time job dopesick.
if i had heroin everyday i could easily function in everyday life. its when i run out the problem comes. sooner or later you will run out and be fucked. this is why i gave oc's up. i was tired of being sick ed. the good doesnt out weight the bad in my book.

While I definitely think that it's an intersting topic for discussion, I have my doubts that heroin will become legalized...at least not until many other drugs are as well (hey, they say pot is a "gateway drug" so mebbe if they legalize that it'll just open the doors for all the others). But I think a lot of people are going to base their decision on that whole idea that you see a vice or some such horrid thing (I'm not saying heroin is horrid, but it reflects a lot of people's views of it)long enough and often enough, you eventually become desensitized to it to an extent and eventually come to accept it....not condone it, just accept it. And eventually, the acceptance leads to a rather blase attitude about it and before you know it, the thing is a part of your life. And from what I can tell, people are very very frightened of this.
As far as the heroin users using more responsibly to contrast with the media's portrayal of them, I'm not so sure that would work. A good number of people that are so against drugs already have all of the images engrained in their brains due to our media's simple use of conditioning. While it is possible to reverse all that, it'd be incredibly difficult what with the media continuing to convey heroin/drug users as such.

The reason i mentioned psych test for drugs such as LSD, was to prevent the small number of depressed/imbalanced individuals that take a high dose and do things like think they can fly or run around naked. Its not common but it happens and a psych test could prevent it. Prolly best to keep depressed folk off acid anyway. Obviously mental illness is an issue too which could be caught here, but ur more likely to catch the mental illness with a normal diagnosis...ur right though pot and booze trigger mental illnesses too.

Interesting statistic. When opiates are legal it is estimated that around 20% of population will become habitual users (I had a good cite on this too can't remember...believe the data was from before illegalization esp in places like china).
On the other hand I find I am more productive and more happy with a good heroin habit (having just kicked mine because of expense I think I have a good estimate). So it really wouldn't bother me if everyone was on H.
Hell I think it would be a damn good substitute for amphetamine use.

'sand' i agree with most of your points but you forgot to mention the wonderfull word tolerance. Even if the stuff was legal, people would just use more and more to try and get some sort of high. Another point that H is a dangerous drug to use. Coke, Meth, X, are illegal drugs also, but the users of these drugs tend not to OD as easily and often as H users. Congratualitons on being such a strong willed person, being able to control opiate usage.

People usually OD cause of using heroin in combonation with alcohol and benzos. If most drug users were educated #1 shot up with other people #2 and if the heroin was always a known quality #3 the % of heroin OD's would be alot less. I think stupidity for the most part has killed more people than any other drug. Also, legal or not people are going to be able to get heroin and when its illegal people will get it either way and many people will also commit crimes to get the money to pay for the expensive habbit. If they legally give it to people, much like they do in Holland, not only would the addicts benefit, but so would everyone else. Also, I could care less if the whole US gets addicted and a quater of them die from an OD, their mind, their body, their choice.

That's nice. Now lets say that your part time job vanishes for some reason. And lets also say that you suddenly find yourself a parent, unplanned but there nonetheless.
Suddenly your little, affordable problem is no longer affordable - you simply can't do everything.
You might be one of the few who could go from daily addiction to non-user, but there's an excellent chance that you'd let everything else fall apart first.
Don't just look at your current situation.
As for the person who said that the movies "Requiem for a Dream" and "Trainspotting" drive anti-heroin negativity, you've got it backwards.

I agree just because I like the drug so much, as for the point on the other drugs being legal some are a bit to crazy to be legal. Mainly psycodelic stuffs.

Cokeboy: Do you think it would be easier to get help with an addiction problem if drugs were legal, or would people be better off with prohibition?
TrashJunkie: My opinion is that all recreational drugs should be legal, if not freely available. It is a personal choice thing and people should not be stigmatised because of it.
Another argument I have heard is that the pro-pot lobby, by saying "legalise pot only", is harming both their cause and the pro-drugs cause by dividing what could be a united front.
The argument that pot is soft so should be legalised is weak to say the least. Better arguments are freedom of choice, more information and help with health issues, ability to openly discuss problems and benefits etc.
A lot of people would like their drug of choice freely available so only concentrate on that. Heroin, pot, e, meth, psychadelics...whatever it is, don't bag others for it or try to prevent them from having it.
