The Indigenous Australian thread

I've just edited a few personal attacks from the thread. As much as they may seem warranted, they add nothing to the topic at hand. Like racial slurs, they will not be tolerated in this discussion.

FourStringMuther, if you don't have anything of substance to say, I suggest you don't bother posting again in this thread.

first, the economic integration through more aboriginal-owned businesses.

no, i do not mean the vendors selling dot paintings for $100 at a sunday market. actual businesses. after all, wealth begets wealth in addition to the pride of taking care of one's own property and seeing it thrive. an essay in newsweek a couple of years back regarding the operation of an aboriginal supermarket in the northern territory stated whilst they proprietors were extremely effective at maintaining the upkeep of a business, their prime motivation was not the pursuit of wealth, rather the pride of being constructive.

That last line really struck a chord with me. I visited an Aboriginal cultural centre in SA in January which is run by the Ngarrindjeri people. They've built the building themselves and run various tours on history/bush medicine and food/wild life etc. They also run a restaurant and the staff have undergone tafe courses in food and business management. The pride displayed by our tour guide and the other staff we came in contact with was a marked difference from most of the exposure I've had with Aboriginal people in Sydney. Having a sense of ownership about the future has a huge impact.

I had come across this when I was having to write stuff for uni...I sorta think it is appropriate for this thread and when I read it i felt glad to know that somewhere in our "system" there is written down an aspiration to living together equally with respect.
:)

"Multiculturalism in Australia is defined as “ as a nation we recognise, accept, respect and celebrate our cultural diversity.” (Healey 2005, p. 1)"

"The idea of multiculturalism in Australia is that people “accept and respect the right of all Australians to express and share their individual cultural heritage within an overriding commitment to Australia and the basic structures and values of Australian society. These are the Constitution, Parliamentary democracy, freedom of speech and religion, English as the national language, the rule of law, tolerance, and equality including equality of the sexes.” (Healey 2005, p. 1)
This is taken from a fact sheet put out by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs. It seems to be a fairly straightforward and clear explanation of how the variety of people in Australia are expected to work and live together. There is room within this definition for an individual to celebrate their own unique cultural background as well as find a commonality with others from different cultural backgrounds. There has however in the debate on multiculturalism (particularly within the mainstream media) a focus on some of those aspects and not others."
:)

^ but it's just bullshit, seriously, it is a utopian form of multiculturalism that cannot be attained

it's like the popular clique in high school saying "listen, you can still be as individual as you'd like, but if you aren't like us, well, you're fucked"

the statement really destructs when it comes to such things as whether aborigines should be able to practice their own form of law. there is no such thing as having different cultures living side by side in perfect harmony with each difference complimenting another; eventually something has got to give.

Well, you could start by offering an apology and compensation to the people of the "Stolen Generation" and their offspring for the pain, suffering and attempted destruction of Aboriginal culture-which bordered on genocide-in Australia during the last century for a start.

I just have to say that I'm appalled, saddened and personally insulted by the blatantly racist and hateful attitudes displayed by many of you toward Aboriginal people. I think that it's quite obvious from some of the comments I’ve read that that many of you have no real understanding- nor do you seek any-of the issues facing indigenous people. You really believe that after having your people and their culture almost completely destroyed after 50,000 years of civilization that it's really going to be that easy to just pick yourself up and "get on with it," especially, when the same shitty, racist attitudes-such as yours-towards them still exist in a the wider Australian community? Please. Maybe if some of you actually put some thought into what it must be like living as an indigenous person in Australia then perhaps your attitude towards the most disadvantaged members of your society would be less hateful and more understanding…

^ Inevitably the national apology will happen but i dont think that its a magic bullet :(

aboriginals need to understand, what has been done in the past cant be undone, just get over it. saying sorry isnt goign to do anything. i didnt do anything, i cant help that soem guy killed your ancestor. get over it, be thankfull that you didnt die.

im part scottish and im not upset at the english for killing my ancestors. im sure more scottish people than aboriginals died. If aboriginals say they hate white people for ruining there culture, move back into the bush, you dont have to live in the city, you dont have to drink every day. live like your fore fathers, go be nomadic again. i dont hit myself with a hammer each day, becuase i dont like it. if aboriginals dont like white culture, move away.

the government already hands out enough money for you, have you noticed that most of the aboriginals that cuase trouble are racist and on the dole. i know at lot of really nice aboriginals, who have jobs and dotn give a shit about there past, there still strongly culture orientated. the have gotten over it, why cant other aborignals? the main people causing trouble get off there lazy ass's and get a job, stop getting hand outs from the government and baby bonus money, and do somethign for yourself. i know a lot of white people liek this as well, im not sayign all aboriginals are like this.

STOP COMPLAINING!!!!!!!!

Ah yeah. See there's this thing called the poverty cycle. It's a lot harder to break out of than you think, if it's what you've been brought up in and are accustomed to.
