The ice demon that is sidelining our police force
T began when this man was spotted allegedly ripping out a fire hydrant in a suspected ice frenzy — and ended with the desperate efforts of nine police and not one but two sedative injections more than 50 minutes later.
The 35-year-old “thrashing around” in the centre of yesterday morning’s chilling encounter was believed to have taken the drug ice before walking around Kent and Bathurst streets trying to stab people about 12.20am and going on to allegedly damage the hydrant.
After being alerted by firefighters, it took at least nine riot squad and general duty police officers to restrain him as they fought to prevent him from injuring himself or others. It then took two paramedics to sedate him before he could be taken to St Vincent’s Hospital.
“The police held him down as he thrashed about and tried to fight their grip for more than 40 minutes until paramedics arrived,” a witness said. “And it was not until the second attempt at sedating him that he was placated enough to be loaded into an ambulance.”
Police launched an investigation and the man may face charges of assaulting police. It could not be confirmed yesterday if he was using ice or other drugs or whether he was suffering a mental problem not of his own making.
Inspector Stewart Leggat from Sydney City Local Area Command said police had a duty to protect him and the public and it was just part of “day to day” policing.
Tragic outcomes involving police and ice have led to police union calls for a tougher line in the courts.
On January 10, Kevin Morris was on a three-day ice binge before a violent outburst at a Southern Highlands McDonald’s, which ended in his death after police were forced to taser the 38-year-old.
NSW Police Association president Scott Weber has called for ice addicts before the courts to undergo mandatory rehabilitation.
