The Holiday gift giving HELP thread & tips on surviving the season

personally i love gift certs, and last year i discovered that gift certs to grocery stores rock! LOL

LOL. Yeah... the year before last I was in major debt cause I was living by myself and my rent was insanely high. So for Christmas my mom got me gift cards to the grocery store (for food, obviously) and Target (for personal items like shampoo and razors and such) and I was so thrilled!!

Spork... care to elaborate? :D

I dont mind getting them, but i think theyre sort of a cop-out, so i rarely get them for someone... unless i know they absolutely adore a certain store.

Kristen, if you want to order stuff online, why not ask a roomate to use their card and give them the cash right then? That's what I did last Christmas with my mom.

I love getting them because I'm a picky person to shop for and I can usually find something at any store that I can use.

I hate giving them because I think that they are really impersonal and I'm just admitting to the person that I have no idea what to give them.

I would give them if it was short notice though and I really had no clue. I'm usually pretty good at getting "the right gift" for those that are on my list though.

you get your mom urban decay? the majority of their eye makeup has glitter.. lol i can't imagine a mom wearing glittery eyeshadow :D
she loves it. she was wearing it before i was.

but my mom isnt really a normal "mom" --- she's super cute and dresses young. no mom-ass or teacher sweaters! she likes express, banana, and gap... and nothing else. people have literally thought we were sisters.

Yeah, I could, but its not necessary, so I don't want to ask. Eventually I'll hit the malls lol ;)

discount at williams and sonoma = same price as buying it somewhere else :D i love that store but its SO overpriced! although there are some things that are similarly priced.

like what? i mean yea there ARE some things you can buy elsewhere, but there is also some things made JUST for them and the quality is amazing.

plus the customer service ethic for the company as a whole is amazing.

also, the markup on most of the stuff, is not more than recomennded value a lot of the time.

There have been a few things that ive bought there (cake pans) that I saw for half as much at department stores... or a set of pans that I was looking at that I found for 100 dollars less... things like that. Plus the stuff like the peppermint bark for over 20 dollars, which is just melted chocolate in a cute tin. Dont get me wrong, I like the stuff in the store, but I usually just browse and find the things I like elsewhere cheaper.

all the cute stuff is way overpriced i agree. sometimes i really like them other times i feel its for people that feel the need to shop for the name if that makes sense.

my comp. is the favorite out of all the ones under williams sonoma :D

here is some stuff i bought at my job for gifts hehe.

i bought these cuz they are cute & cheap.

AAAAHHHHH I need gift advice!!

I can't believe that I waited this long.... okay:

I need to get a gift for a girl who's not exactly a girlfriend, but more like a new "close" friend... It needs to be cheap, under $20 and I need to get it by Dec. 7. She's a very conservative dresser, but she has all kinds of crazy underwear
She wears a girl Rolex (this is why I'm freaked... she's high maintenance like fuck)

What can I get her that says "I care... but I'm not your boyfriend?" for less than $20 and still be an appropriate gift for this type of girl....

And don't say "dildo" or anything novelty-like - she's not down for bullshit like that.

Girls like smelly lotion. Something good and sweet, but not too strong. Bath and Body Works would be good for that.

Or Jewlery.. you could buy something not too bad for $20...

Or if it's cold and snowy where you are, maybe like.. a scarf or something warm and fuzzy.

*shrugs*

I'm thinking a little gift basket from bath and body works would be perfect.

captainballs... i'm going to have to disagree with anything smelly or lotiony or bath and body worksy... just because when someone gets me something like that, SURE i'm grateful, but it's obvious they dont know me. that's something i'd get a coworker or second cousin in a gift exchange or someone i know but arent that close with. just my opinion, and especially if you say she's "high maintenance..."

i *love* the warm and fuzzy idea! analyze her wardrobe style, check the color and style of her coat, and go for a scarf .... maybe some gloves or a cute hat, too. (depending on price) if she doesnt already have a pair, fuzzy slippers are like... thebestthingintheworld!!!!!! going along with the keeping warm theme, a half pound of her favorite coffee/tea/cocoa and an oversized mug stuffed with other fun things (like comfort candies) would be cute, too.

i'm a huge fan of personalized gifts--- so i never just buy smelly stuff. but IF YOU MUST dont go to b&bw!!! their products are not luxurious... the body shop carries one of the only lotions good enough to smell AND use in this world... mango body butter. origins, in your local dept store, carries a slightly more expensive "body butter" but its called perfect world... sooo luxurious. clinique also carries a body butter, but it is unscented--- regardless, it is amazing. but thats only if you go the smelly stuff route. which i would not suggest doing.

I think Bath and Body works gift sets would be a nice idea but... if she's anything like me, she's probably too picky about fragrances ;) Last time someone bought me one of those gift sets it was a really horrible scent I couldn't stand to wear. So maybe it isn't the best idea unless you happen to KNOW exactly what scent she prefers.

Do you know what her room looks like? Does she have any special theme to it? For example my bedspread and my room is a celestial theme. So for my birthday my roommate got me celestial themed pictures to hang on the wall, as well as star and moon candle holders. So they matched perfectly!

Take any little detail you know about her and elaborate on it :)
