My great grand dad was a luftwaffe field division flieger during WW2. After turning himself in to the allied forces he was a prisoner of war in Texas from 1940 until 44. After which he was recruited into the OSS because he was educated and spoke 6 languages at the time. Over the years he changed quite a bit as a person, and by the time he became a member of the CIA, he was managing assets in the newly expanded territories of the USSR. He says that most of his colleagues knew we were not at any threat of utter annihilation, and that alot of them were racists and right wing nut jobs(William F Buckley anyone?). The cold war was about economics plain and simple. There are just as many nuclear weapons now as there were then, and we are not at the brink of "utter annihilation" now, nor were we then.
By the 60s, according to him he was in the Democratic Republic of Congo working for Larry Devlin. Patrice Lamumba tried to nationalize all of Congo's assets, while accepting aid from the USSR(heaven forbid, why would they do that when they can just borrow money at high interest rates from friends of their Belgian overlords), and supposedly Eisenhower ordered his assassination. Devlin apparently had some reason why he didn't want to do it, but my Great grand dad says it would have eventually happened had the Katanga not overthrown his government with US aid and supplies. After being captured, Lamumba was taken to a field by 3 Belgian law enforcement officials and executed by a firing squad.
Devlin got pretty close to his successor Mobutu Sese Seko, but my GGD said he was the sickest fuck he had ever met, and that he hated even being in the same room with the guy. He spent another five years there, and said he would never go back to Africa. Mobutu ended up changing the countries name to Zaire, running a kleptocracy that bankrupted the country for 30 years, murdering 100s of thousands of dissidents, and in his wake a civil war broke out that killed a combined total of one million people leaving the country in absolute shambles. Did you know that they still have slavery in "Zaire" to this day? The Bantu enslave the Pygmies and pay them a towel a day to do back breaking work.
This was a criminal act by two governments towards another, and it was economically motivated. And by that I don't just mean Capitalism vs Communism, but that large multinational corporations were involved. This is just one story I have some information and pictures on, but there are dozens of analogous events executed by a shadow organization of which little is really known, inside and out.
