some of the melodies drive me crazy.. it's called hardstyle for a reason, not soft style. I don't want to listen to sad/love song melodies in hardstyle. Should be raw and angry :D but every once in a while a nice melo is good.

I agree, every once in a while I hear a melody that just fits nicely. I don't like stuff that is trying to be epic, I just want that kick and bass. A lot of newer Hardstyle is actually pretty bad. I only got into EDM a little over a year ago, and already I realize how much better the older stuff is. All this new crap has no deep driven bass, it's all about cheesy melodies. I don't get it, honestly. I just want to stomp my feet to the beat and dance to that kick and bass!

Some of the newer stuff I like just because it can be uplifting, but I tend to go for the darker styles. When I'm fucking mad, or upset, hardstyle/core is the best shit for me to listen to, because it helps me release my anger or sadness and feel good again.

Such a big hardstyle fan. Saving up to fly to Netherlands just to go to Defqon.1 2012.

About the whole oldchool hardstyle vs.nustyle discussion(that's what me+friends call it) I'd like to chip in my two cents.

I agree 100% about some of the newer hardstyle artists not making their kicks hard/raw enough.
I think Brennan Heart is the biggest offender here, he has a few nice tracks like Running Late, but a lot of others have over the top melodies and weak kicks.

However I think some newer artists have found a good balance by having complex melodies but still keeping bangin kicks.

My favorites right now are Dutch Master and Kodex.

Favorite will always be Showtek - My 303 though. Intro is just too long!
 
^ I keep trying to like hardstyle but no matter how much I listen to it I just can't get into it. I think part of the reason is because the synths they use remind me of cheesy epic trance from a decade ago. My wife likes it though so I will continue to subject myself to it in order to hopefully understand it one day.

Agreed, so many of the kicks nowadays are too weak, or 'bassy.' It's called hardstyle for a reason - should be raw and hard! Some of the melodies are okay, but there's quite a few that are way too sappy when they should be sinister. That's why I started to listen to more hardcore.. it's much more aggressive than today's hardstyle, and sometimes that's exactly what I'm looking for in a track.

Dutch Master played in my city on New Years eve, unbelievable set. He's an entertaining fellow, too.

Edit 99% of Hardstyle is terrible, it is very samey, boring and i hate those schreetchy (sp) synths they use but like in all genres there are some gems to be had.
