the guitar players megathread

can't play guitar - but sure can play stealth air guitar while dancing at concerts, plucking along right hip, no fretboard

Been on blue light for years but never found this thread, since this site likes drugs...

Here's a track a recorded all the parts for in a 5 hours or so my first time candy-flipping. Drums are an electronic drumset, I got no idea how the form came to be or which parts were recorded first...

Promise it doesn't sound like a mess despite the state I was in...

hahaha, at first thought you were serious, but then i get it. been wasting my time "playing laptops" recently i should pick the guitar back up

Hey guys, first time posting in here in about 2 and a half years!

The 'crew' from back then seems to have dissipated but hopefully there are some other great regulars here now. :)

I'm probably borderline when it comes to whether I can record a song or not & then expose it to you lot =D

I've played on & off for almost 9 years but because I've never played in a band or anything & because of bad habits, I hardly ever try to play whole songs through so, as such I'm prone to making mistakes & not staying in time for longer periods of time.

I actually have only just picked up my guitar having not played it for quite a few months & I was amazed at how easily everything came back to me. It's like riding a bike as they say. :)

Anyway, I shall certainly be keeping up with the discussions in here, even if I am not quite ready to be letting you hear my playing.

I currently use a Line 6 Spider II 15W Practice Amp but I don't feel that it is doing my Fender American Strat any justice.

The Amps I am looking towards for a replacement are the Fender Mustang I-II V2 series. Now, I've heard very good reviews about them but I am undecided which I should opt for.

Ideally, I thought the 12" speaker & extra wattage of the II would make the most out of my guitar but I've realised that I won't be turning up the volume much at all. From what I can find, the II isn't particular any better than the I at low volume settings. I believe the III is but that's out my price range.

So, what do you guys think? Do any of you use a Mustang I or II, V1 or V2 or do you have any other suggestions?

So guys, no-one got experience with the Mustang Amps or any other suggestions? See End

PS - Who thought a little Meph would re-ignite my guitar passion but hey, there you go...! I'm actually playing rather well at the moment.

Does anyone else find that when you are trying to learn a song or improve your skills, sometimes a break allows you to nail it? If I practice the same things, day in, day out... I just don't improve.

I've noticed I improve the most learning new songs or improvising on scales. I think it's all to do with learning the fret board & picking up new skills, & learning how to use them together.

I've only started being able to write my own songs the past couple of years... they are pretty simple songs using arpeggiating, hammer-on & pull-offs, & slides around chord shapes. At the moment I'm using the Boston - More Than A Feeling, Mazzy Star - Into Dust & Wonderwall Chord patterns... gives me a lot of things to play with in that area of the fret board :)

Nice job.

I notice you use the correct way of doing vibrato where you use that semi-circular motion with your hand - any tips on how to pick it up? Fucking useless at it right now...

*EDIT* - I think I've found the perfect amp for my needs:

Fender Champion 40 - 40W 12" Speaker - it supposedly sounds good at the low end too, so I can get the added benefit of the 12" speaker without having to turn the sound up...! Fender amps are known for their superb clean channels & the rest on offer seems pretty damn good from the video review I watched. The only thing will take some getting used to is the lack of a Mid Control. I prefer the fact is a more traditional style modelling amp.

Screw it, I just ordered it... can't wait to hear the difference a good amp makes to my Strat =D

guitarist here...here's a full length demo album i just completed...the concept is many styles drawn together, but kinda within an avant garde.psychedelic concept, main focus is on guitar stuff within that concept though

If that is indeed you, you sound like your probably one of the most talented guitarists who posts here... I didn't listen to it fully but you had lots of nice licks in the varying styles. Good work :)

I decided now that I am getting back into guitar, it's time to get serious. I've played on & off for 9 years, & although I have some skills that you'd only get in that time, I'm severely lacking in other areas. Specifically I just need to focus on my timing & accuracy... actually playing whole songs rather than just little bits of what takes my fancy. I'm sure if I nail that, I'll seem much more like someone who has played for 9 years...

I'm currently working at nailing Blackbird... I can already play it really, so it shouldn't be too long before I record it. It will be my first official recording! Coming soon™

I picked up a few things from my local guitar shop... some Dunlop Lemon Oil & Guitar Polish - I figure it's time I start looking after my guitar properly - I mean I rub it with a cloth once in a while & store it in it's hard case every night but that's not enough. My first guitar teacher was an absolute fanatic for keeping his guitar clean - he used to clean the strings every day. To be fair it was a £3500 guitar & he was a jazz guitarist, so that might explain things too.

I also picked up a book on Blues Guitar. It's not awfully complex & I probably know a fair few things in it already but its the theory I'm after really. I think having a sound understanding of how everything on the fret board connects really gives you an edge. Interestingly, my friend who is a amazing at guitar said he was jealous at my knowledge of chords & scales... I was jealous of how good he is & the fact he can play anything you put in front of him almost perfectly within 5 minutes. One day I'll have somebody who is jealous of me... for the right reasons =D

So, I think it's about time someone asked this question - what's your rig?

Currently:

Fairly obviously a Fender Strat, but to get specific, a 2011 American Standard Stratocaster in Sienna Sunburst with Rosewood Fret Board (duh!). I'd just polished the body before that pic, so nice & shiny! Hopefully my fret board will get a bit more life back in it after I use some Lemon Oil on it... should be tomorrow, just awaiting some new strings. Replacing the stock standard Fender strings with some D'Addario's. God knows why I've kept the same strings on for so long!

I won't bother putting a pic up of my shitty acoustic (Hope to replace it with a Taylor at some undetermined point in the future) or my Line 6 Spider II which will soon be relegated as a spare for back up. I sold my Epiphone that there are pictures of earlier in this thread... I couldn't justify owning two electric guitars!

Nice, but where's the rest?!

That's one of those that I just want to jam on for hours.

Could get a backing track and record the rest,

Dunno, just happens after awhile. once you get the feeling
