So this I guess is about music, however, the gorillaz' self-titled album is filled with ambiguous messages open to interpretation. What, if any, parallels to psychedelic consciousness do you find in the project?

I always thought Clint Eastwood was symbolic of the psychedelic experience. Sunshine in a bag seems like bright potentials held in a material, like a blotter lol. he says its coming on as it fades into the dude free styling . And the verse lyrics seem to describe boundaries breaking down and noticing Babylon structure from what I remember. The dude rapping is like the voice of the psychedelic exp I thought. but its been years since I analyzed it, and I was eating a lot of acid when I did analyze it lol.

i think this thread would have better luck in the Drug Culture subforum... :) i do like that album though, but i never got to analyzing it that much... too lazy i guess.

Interesting. Another song I always got a strong message from was "sound check (gravity)." Not so much the words themselves, but more the structure of the song. How it starts with the character sitting and playing guitar, and how everything around him is very simple. Then when it goes into his mind it becomes theatrical. IMO it begins to sound like a machine. A heart beat, gears, a structure. Almost as if the character is realizing their thoughts live inside of a machine (their body). While also realizing how little control they have over anything, since gravity creates what he normally perceives as "reality."

I was always under the impression that "Clint Eastwood" was actually making a more direct reference to a specific Clint Eastwood film...actually a specific part of a specific Clint Eastwood film. The music video for it leads me to believe that that much more. But hey, that's the beauty of that record.

^ how the hell do i make your name? like what the hell do i call you? !@#$ - best i got...computer trickery...

yeh its a cool album, havnt heard it for ages...first time i ever got drunk was at a mates 15th birthday party...it was a rad party. pretty much our whole year from school was there, the party was in the makings for sometime. pre facebook. i can remember flyers going around the groups and stuff at lunch breaks and bus lines. anyway turned up on the night with a crew and we were supplied with liquor it was sweet, spewed my guts up pretty good like most everyone else lol...clint eastwood was smashed heaps throughout the night and early in the morn when we all woke up...so its sort of like my gateway album to getting fucked up lol...makes me feel old now though, those were the days! we were in year 9 and the album had only just come out.

i always thought the clint eastwood tune was about ganja but i just read the lyrics and i guess its pretty open to interpretation could be any drug really...pretty choice lyrics and a damn tidy album all-round...im gonna put it on again now :)

Gorillaz are one of my all time favourite bands. Each era of the band has been brilliant, and they always revive the somewhat tepid mainstream music scene whenever a new album comes out.

Sounds like MDPV.

saw them headline at coachella a few years ago. before, i worried that they may not be able to headline a show of that size. they showed me why they were top of the bill - it was an excellent show.
