this is my review of korn as a 40 year old that got the korn S/T for christmas in the fifth grade.. this is what i went through with korn... i get this might be TL,,DR/TMI for most people, but i really like to post my story over the internet.
i remember getting korn's first album for christmas in fifth grade cause i was obsessed with blind on the radio and loved the image of people that wore korn shirts. i didn't know when i asked for the tape that it had some pretty fucked up imagery on the cover. i don't think my parents should've even left this tape under the christmas tree. i think it was unwrapped. in my family the unwrapped presents were supposed to be from santa claus. i have a sister that is 6 years younger than me. so i guess my sister was like 4. i think the cover of the album with the young girl on a swing set with the lurking shadow is way too much for a young girl to see. i was happy to get the korn tape, but it turned out i couldn't really take in the album and listen to it properly because i was worried i was going to disturb my sister... upon first listen i got through blind the first song on the tape. i was pretty stoked on the second track "ball tongue" at first, but 2.48 into the song i always heard the lyrics "how can you fucking dump me brunanigan". i don't know what the lyrics really are. i thought "brunanigan" was slang for a brunette girl or something. i'm pretty sure it's "how can you fucking dump me". sounds like he's trying to sound like an obsessive stalker dude. gave me a bad trip. i was worried my sister was gonna think dudes she didn't like were gonna violently pressure her into relationships when she got older.
i hate to do this but the third track "need to" i wasn't really as into like "ball tongue". when i was in fifth grade first listening to the album in like 1996 i wasn't sure if i was thrown off by the "how can you fucking dump me" shit and being unable to check out the cassette with my sister listening through the walls. years later i have to say this track isn't really listenable to me. i don't think it has good flow, and i'm not really into the riffs. there's a lot of stuff in the hardcore scene that i've heard where i know i'm just not into the riffs and pitcch of "need to". the flow is off... i remember liking "clown" when i first heard it.. when i checked out korn years later as an older teen that did drugs, i knew "ball tongue", "clown" and some of the other tracks on the album were good, but not until recently have i been in a place to really get how engaging some of these songs can be.,, i think hearing this tape as a kid and feeling put off by disturbing my family kind of gave me a negative impression of how good this shit really is. like i knew it was cool when i was a kid, but i couldn't relax and just sit back and let it do it's thing. some korn is just so good. this shit has been just making my brain dance for the past few weeks.. all through my adult life i recognized that the korn S/T is listenable, but it just never flowed right to me. 30 years of checking out korn, this shit really just hit me .... also got to say that "blind" is fucking cool as hell, but it's not as hypnotic as some of the other tracks i'm going to list.
my favorite tracks on the S/T are probably "clown", "ball tongue", "fake", and definitely "lies". i remember when i was in fifth grade i wasn't into a good portion of the cassette toward the middle to end, but lies was the fucking shit to me. i got that. i could listen to it "do you ever... thinking about you life... thinking about your inner fears..." with the growling. idk the whole song is good, and like the whole album is cool shit, but some of it i can't really pick up on the flow and i find it unlistenable... this album has some banging tracks for repeat though. hot shit... i don't think "faget" really works out as a whole, but i really really like the part "i can see inside you fine... blessing in disguise" part. it sounds like he's screaming "heal" in the back ground." i like that a lot. the song doesn't really work out as a whole though. i can't really see that on my play list. the tracks i mentioned are really good though.
at the beginning of "clown" i remember listening to the S/T and they are talking about a song from the second album "twist". i always thought that was because "twist" was the easiest to listen to of korn's hardcore going from really deep guitar pitches to the bizarre really high pitches they do.. there really is something about "ball tongue". it's more engaging than "twist"... idk.. some of the other songs really have that deep pitch to really high pitch going on on the first S/T.. idk. it never really caught me in the way that it did now...
i really should check out the second korn a bit more. i really have to say "no place to hide" is my favorite of the singles.. idk about the other two. all ya'll sex freaks think "adidas" is cool. idk about that song's listenability.
i don't know. i really feel like a lot of people are gonna think "got the life" and "Freak on a leash" are the best korn songs.. i definitely think there is some type of mass appeal thing about those songs. they are like more melodic in a way maybe. idk. those songs really aren't like other korn songs to me. i like those songs in a special way that i don't feel about the songs i'm listing from the S/T. "got the life" and "freak on a leash" really are in their own league. they can't be compared and the stuff is equally as good in their own ways.
that idk... "Twist" is just like a flat song the way it feels. i always thought it was one of the coolest korn songs because of it's minimalist appeal.. i really feel like there are some songs on the first S/T that are something else... "twist" is not really engaging. idk it's kind of just there. i hear it and it doesn't really affect me. i like that about music when something cool is happening and i think twist is super cool. the scat vocals are awesome. the guitar is so fucking cool. but idk. i might've been wrong to think "twist" was so good for so many years. i still think it's awesome though.
idk.. if anybody thinks this is too much. i'm trying to get noticed on the internet by the CIA or NSA or some shit. i really think i'm hypersensitive to music and some people with the same brain chemistry that feel like i do will notice the same things about korn and other music in the future. i'm hoping the government creates a file on me and they study people from their internet connections if they aren't already doing that and there is going to be something to learn about hypersensitive people from their play list.. i don't think that all hypersensitive people will have the ego to get into korn. it takes a special person.. but there are all sorts of hits on the radio in pop music and some of the stuff i can really listen to and get into and other stuff i can't. i listen to some music from every genre.. idk. there is a lot of hip hop on the radio that is good and a lot of poeple aren't really gonna get what i think is special about the sound. idk, some stuff is just listenable to me.. idk if it's really even right for me to post this on BL, but idk. i've been listening to korn and seeing how it makes me feel. even when i'm kind of tired and don't feel like listening to music, some of the tracks i listed can be kind of hypnotic and helpful. not if i'm too tired though. heh.
i really like a lot of newer korn that came out after "follow the leader", but idk. it's not really my thing. i think it's cool if people like the korn tracks i don't listen too. i'm not really sure how listenable or unlistenable newer korn is. i know i've heard stuff i like a lot and some stuff that i'm not really into.. korn is the shit though.
anyways, not trying to bother anyone.. just want to send this through the internet.. maybe aliens will get it or something. thanks.
