The fear
Black
It stands
In the back of mind.
Strangling our
Simple confidence.
The fear
Our dreams are what
It makes us believe
We can't achieve.
The fear
Spinning wild webs
Over aspirations.
We suffocate
Under the weight
Of its uninvited ache.
The fear
It builds a monument
To our shortcomings.
And we habitually
Pay
An evil homage
To our own failure.
The fear
Familiar in its
Taste we drink
Willingly.
Forgetting
The unforgiving bitterness.
The fear
Its acid leaks over
Relationships.
Paining and straining
The precious promises
We have every intention of
Keeping.
The fear
It is the root to despair
And it grows inside
The ugliest garden.
Grows enormous
In its own blackness.
Slowly
Drowning us of
All our light.
The fear
We don't need
to bleed from the
seed of
It's mind crime
We can taste the sugary scream
Of liberation!
And never forget it's flavor.
Never know our limitations.
Will you taste it too?
Together we can rattle
The Fear.
Send it shrieking
Into its fractured night.
Back to its irrational
Origins
Putting it forever
In plain perspective.
We can achieve
All those everythings!
It is time
to believe.
In ourselves
And each other...

Wow. I read this at 2:00 AM last night and haven't been able to get it out of my head. I have been dealing with "the fear" for awhile in many respects. Thank you for the poem. The way you point to different ways that fear creeps into us was a revelation in a sense. Thanks for the helping to put things in perspective "the fear" is something we can all defeat.
I will taste it too!!

some very serious things going on in this poem.
very concise, and to the point, without being terribly obvious
it makes me wanna say, "i'm there, and i need to be freed, show me the way" or
"i've been there and now i'm free, let me show you the way".
Great stuff - keep it up!!!

so where do you go from there.... just let it eat you alive? so we find ways to ignore the things we should really face..... pretend that there's nothing there, that we dont really care anyhow. blank out the bulk of our emotions; turn on the cruise control... just ride, not taking any risks; staying at a steady, safe 60 miles per hour...if anything should go wrong; just slam on the breaks and stop; god forbid you should accelerate to 70-80-90 mph.... faster... losing control.... the wind sucking in through the window.... the car engine drowning out the radio.... you cant even hear your own thoughts anymore... its too late..... at this point, the breaks arent working anymore... you just have to hang on....your spinning out of control, scared to death.... but it feels so good. so good. if you just let yourself go.

Nice work. To know the truth is to know that fear is truly the root of all our insecurities, our hatreds, our anger, our envy... our evil.

What difference do you think you can make? One single man in all this madness...?

I have known "the fear" way too well. You described it perfectly. It's one of the very hardest things to kick.
