The Face of Eugenics in 2014: The Woman Who Pays Drug Addicts to Get Sterilized

The pitiful amount of money and inadequate (or exorbitantly expensive) rehab facilities available to those people for a start.

Education is a proven factor in lowering birth rates in certain communities.
This is a poverty/class/education issue - not just a drug issue.
Addicts are people too; sterilising them (or paying for their consent) implies that
a) chances of recovery are slim to nil
b) the addicts themselves will have less will to work towards living as "normal" citizens (for want of a better word) who have families and aspirations and whatnot - so they may as well just keep using.

It's encouraging people to give up. Where there is love, and a future - there is hope in beating addiction. Take away the chance to have a family, and some people don't see much to live for.

That's my take. I see what you're saying - but this is (to me, an offensive) band-aid solution.
Doesn't fix the poverty, the social problems or help the people involved.
Just - "here's $300, go cop a fix".

Yes, again, well said. I too find her "solution" highly offensive, wasteful of better spent time and money, and wholly ineffective at best, destructive and harmful at the worst.

Promotes the idea that those who use drugs or are labeled as addicts or label themselves as addicts shouldn't have children. So what does that say about them? That they're genetics are fucked up, that they're inherently flawed? And what does that say about their children?

What about people with other diseases or "disorders," or mental illness? By her account it wouldn't be a bad idea to pay them a meaningless sum of money to get sterilized. Again, what does that say about them, their children? You really think that's reasonable?

Yea, perhaps I can understand how on it's face she could seem completely reasonable. But it's not just what she literally says, it's also the implications of what she says and promotes.

$300 is just a bribe.
It's not going to help anyone get their life in order.
Quite the opposite, in these circumstances I would say.

Eugenicist probably isn't the right word; fundamentalist crackpot, more like it.
