The Elephant in the Room (Or, Lady GaGa)

what your saying is that classical pianists can only look like...classical pianists, not 24yr old girls?

music would be hella boring if no one cared about their "persona."
thank goodness no one making music seems to think like you.

So you're saying 24 year old girls look like this?

Or this?

There's a fine line between looking typical and dressing like a mental patient who thinks it's Halloween everyday. The way she dresses is a marketing ploy. It's not her being creative or eccentric. She and her label know that she wouldn't be as famous as she is now if it didn't look like Tim Burton designed her outfits. That may be the point, but it makes her an even bigger sell-out. Not to mention hideous.

why not? if i had the insane amounts of $$$$ like she does, i'd design my clothes to be whatever the fuck i felt like.

props to her for doing it all herself - she's not just being guided by a suit and a pen like axl says, she writes her songs designs her clothes and basically has the final say in everything that is related to her.

and wtf that the main criticism of her so far is her outfits.

what your saying is that classical pianists can only look like...classical pianists, not 24yr old girls?

I don't know what a classical pianist looks like, which once again, is my point exactly. I keep saying music is about MUSIC and you keep bringing up how people look =D

music would be hella boring if no one cared about their "persona."
thank goodness no one making music seems to think like you.

Now you're making personal attacks? That's real mature. And I'll have you know that I am a musician and I do perform publicly. I normally wear jeans and a t-shirt and you know what? People still like my music 8o I don't have to attract people by dressing like a clown, I do it by writing simple melodies and meaningful lyrics.

I had to LOL at your putting "purist" and "snob" in the same group, as if there was no difference =D But you are correct in aligning persona and style with pop, cuz we all know pop isn't about the music anyways.

i mentioned them separately because i recognize they're sometimes distinct. but i've spent enough time having conversations like this to realize that there's rarely a practical difference.

Go look up "music" in the dictionary. You're only reiterating what I'm trying to say anyways: a) image and persona have nothing to do with music, and b) mainstream pop isn't about the music either.

there's "image" and "persona" involved in ALL types of music, not just the ones you don't approve of. you don't see orchestras performing at bars in jeans and t-shirts. music is defined by how you experience it, and that experience involves a lot more than the sound waves produced by the instruments and vocalists.

Actually there's a huge difference, in fact, they're at opposite ends of the spectrum. A purist cares about the music for what it is and what it's supposed to be: the MUSIC. A snob cares about image rather than music....prolly bases their opinion of music solely on what they see on MTV.

there's "image" and "persona" involved in ALL types of music, not just the ones you don't approve of.

If I heard any pop music that was more than just a 3 minute long repetitive hook with no substance that doesn't even make me think, then I might approve of it.

Why do you guys keep bringing up what people are wearing? Are you telling me that if you went to see an orchestra perform, walked into the venue, and saw them wearing jeans that you'd walk out and ask for a refund? Who's being the snob here?

music is defined by how you experience it, and that experience involves a lot more than the sound waves produced by the instruments and vocalists.

I believe this is the gist of where we differ. Pop music and music videos are defined by "how you experience it." But music itself is exactly that, sound waves produced by instruments and vocalists. I guess that's what makes me a purist. I could give two shits about what someone looks like as long as the sounds they are creating are pleasing to my ear and bonus points if the person who wrote the song is actually the one singing it and playing their own instrument(s).

Let's get off of outfits and focus on the music. Most modern, mainstream pop has no substance. The lyrics don't mean anything. I do have to give it to LGG that apparently she writes her own stuff, but the majority of them out there are just performers and nothing more. They memorize other people's songs and lip sync at their shows.

Pop music isn't supposed to make you think about shit.

it's pop music, like candy, or soda pop. pleasant fizzy feeling and sugar high and that's it. i don't listen to music to make me think about the world and how fucked up it is all the time, shit i like to go dancing. lady gaga fits the bill for fizzy dancing. i like gaga the same way i like cocaine ;)

i'm not a fan. i hear it ALL THE TIME at the boys' place next door, but generally i'm way too drunk to give a shit. but tbh her look and sound makes me gag.

i have no idea what she sings about, the only lyrics i remember are the parody one "i can't believe i just shit my pants" (youtube it).

I took the time to look up her musical past and yeah, I overlooked her classical training. She's got some chops in that respect. Although, it's a bit of a moot point since the music she puts out over the airwaves is nowhere close to being that kind of genre. Who cares if you're Mozart-level talent if you're putting out Britney Spears-level pop music.

She's weird for the sake of being weird. An attention whore. "OMG LOOK AT ME LOOK HOW WEIRD AND STRANGE I CAN BE!! CAN YOU FUCKING BELIEVE HOW FAR OUT I AM??" That kind of attitude is a huge turn off. And I'm usually a fan of the eccentric.

So personally, I'm not a fan of her look or her shitty music. But if other people are, more power to them. And I'm not hating on her, she's making money out of people who buy into her shtick. Go her.

That's cool, I'm glad you don't think I'm judging. I got all my dancing out of my system when I was in my late teens, early twenties and you're right, certain types of music are conducive to shaking your ass and certain types of music are conducive to pondering your navel. I prefer the latter.

I might add that even when I used to go dancing, I didn't like most of the music the DJs played but it didn't keep me from having fun. That being said, I still refused to dance to ABBA....I had to draw the line somewhere =D

IMO, she is neither talented nor interesting.

I will not lie: her sudden widespread popularity is more than a bit disturbing to me.

There is so much fantastic music available to listen to on our planet; there are literally multitudes of wonderful musicians!

Why waste time with mediocre swill like Lady GaGa??

Wow, here is something that I am 100% neutral about, I cannot believe it.

With Lady Gaga, my appeal-to-homo (which thinks she looks amazing) side is completely at odds with my music-talent side (which is so picky it thinks Tool are a bit too mainstream).

That said, I will say that I would agree with the opinion here that image DOES matter to music. But like I said, whatever IS amazing about her, it is 2/3rds amazing, and that is ONLY if you agree with the preceding paragraph (otherwise, it would be 0/3, as are most of the opinions here).

Max and those who think she is "weird for the sake of being weird", well to be fair, that is probably what everyone said about Madonna back in the 80's. And if that's too poppy a reference for you (not for me, as I think Madonna has actual talent), then I'd go as far as say that this is what people thought about Tchaikovsky back in his day, and look at him now.

You don't walk past a construction site and catch a bunch of manly-men bopping around to Cindy Lauper.

actually.... ahhh nevermind.

anyway, all the creepy shit lady gaga wears reminds me of the hermaphrodite voldo from soul calibur

i don't care if she said it, she's still lying. the more a girl talks about giving up sex, the more she's actually out falling on random cock. fact.

I'm gay and I simply don't understand her image How is this appealing to your homo side? Her outfits are disgusting, she looks bizarre and gimmicky and annoying. And she relies on this gimmick to push her incredible uninspired music through to the general populous.

She exploits the gay community in a way that is unsettling to me. I really doubt she gives two shits about the LGBT plight, I thinks he wants to tap into a huge demographic and make even more money.

I haven't heard one song by her that isn't musically reflected in another. She is trite, boring, and really outrageously annoying. Not to mention overrated. Her presence in the music industry honestly makes me want to vomit.

theres my rant haha
