The EADD Linux Technical Gibberings Thread

Very true, I should have mentioned that I also use Dovecot as an IMAP server together with fetchmail to retrieve it and exim4 to load it into my mail folder, in maildir format.

Backups. Yes I should get back to that idea I once had of taking a backup :D
Postfix for SMTP. Spent waaaay too many hours troubleshooting postfix setups to let it go so easily :D Exim look far too civilised.
Rsync and cron for backups. Saved my arse/job a few times.

I had reservations about XBMCBuntu replacing the PS3 which now graces a forgetful epileptic's front room. But I'm pleased with the outcome.

I downloaded XBMCBuntu and installed it on an HP Compaq dc5750 PC. I put 4GB RAM, an NVidia low profile card with HDMI, and a Bluray drive in it. And a 1TB SATA HD.

I have access to ALL of 4OD, in far better quality than on my laptop or my original PS3 (sorry a.s.!) and ooodles more. With NO ADVERTS. My media collection, shared over NFS, plays without hiccup, glitch or other incident. Youtube is all there. And hunners of other shit. Documentary sites, al jazeera, blah blah blah.

My music library plays beautifully, gaplessly. I wasn't happy about having my TV on all the time to listen to music, but the screen-blanking feature means it's consuming minimal power. I.e. it's not getting hot.

It is a thing of goodness. I've got SuperMeatBoy playing on it with the my XBox 360 controller, and AndYetItMoves, though it takes a tweak or two. Happy to divulge for interested parties.

But the sound quality is the best bit; so much better than the output from my laptop with it's little digital singalong in the background. Silence means silence! =D

Haven't got Bluray disc working yet but it's in the pipeline; main thing is it plays all those BDRIP files without any problems at all.

Happy <3

Sounds good, Knock. At least the words that I understood did. I'm not even gonna ask about "SuperMeatBoy" 8o

My horizons set lower. I'm still getting over the chuffedness of having acces to my external HDD (450gb of choonsome Goodnessess <3) again now I'm all Linuxed up. Small things. Simple pleasures. I'd probably pop if I had a set-up like that, Knock :D

SMB is the 2D platform game to end all 2D platform games. It's fiendishly clever, fiendishly difficult although when you work it out it's fiendishly logical. It implants itself in your brain and stages a takeover. I honestly believe 10% of my brain is now dedicated to this game.

The music and graphics are sublime too, in a retro-way. It's a true work of art, and a fucking fun game that taxes even the best of gamers, but lets lesser mortals (moi) have their fun too.

Anyone any good with Bluez/general BluToof stuffs on Ubuntu? Trying to get pix from phone to pooter and Bluez has found my phone and phone has found me pooter but everytime I've tried to send owt it just says "Connection failed". Dunno what I'm doing wrong. Do you need credit on yer phone to transfer files?

No you don't need any credit.

What steps have you actually taken? I normally pair the computer and phone - make the phone discoverable/visible, click the bluetooth icon and choose Setup a new device. The computer should search for and find the phone. Select it and choose Continue, then just follow the instructions. If you want to transfer a photo from the phone to the computer, find the photo on the phone and there should be a menu option to send it via bluetooth. It should offer you the name of your computer as a destination.

When you send to the computer you should get a prompt asking you if you want to accept the file, choose OK, then it should ask you if you want to open it. It doesn't actually open it (it doesn't here, anyway) it just locates it in the file browser.

Righty. I deleted everything I did last time and started from scratch.

Phone is set to visible, went to setup new device on pooter, phone got found, pooter said hello to phone and successfully completed setup, phone appears on list of Blutoof devices, pooter appears on phone list of Blutoof devices. Phone won't talk to pooter and vice versa. Just says "Connecting fail" whatever I try to do.

Am flummoxed. Although this is hardly an unusual state of affairs 8)

OK, try using Blueman, some people say it's more reliable than the default bluetooth applet. (I suspect the Samsung phone does bluetooth in a non-standard way, I used to have problems with my old samsung). You'll need to install the blueman package. It'll give you another bluetooth applet icon, a blue one. It seems to coexist with the default applet somehow. You might need to log off and back in for the applet to start.

You should probably unpair the phone in the old bluetooth applet before you use Blueman.

Then make the phone discoverable, click on the Blueman icon, Setup New Device, Forward, select the phone, blah blah blah.

EDIT: Have you tried connecting with USB? If it's going to work, it'll just fucking work :) Should pop up a file browser when you plug it in. And if it's not going to work, it won't.

Let me know if and when you get it working, I still dual boot my HTPC with windows and ubuntu with xbmc installed, only ever boot the windows partition to use the blu-ray drive. I couldn't get blu-ray in ubuntu or xbmc working. But to be honest I mostly just use the PS3 to play blu-ray, depends which room it's in as I move it between the bedroom and living room frequently.

I haven't tried for a while but I will seeing as you've reminded me!

Got to say I've been loving xbmc more and more since I set it up. It handles absolutely any video I throw at it, picture and sound are excellent. I get free live (and time-shifted) TV over the internet with TV Catch Up. 4OD, iPlayer and al-Jazeera work beautifully (had to find iPlayer as a separate add-on, not in the repository, but it's available and works great). Loads of other add-ons, there's even a forum add on compatible with vBulletin so I can access BL on it. Nice wireless remote that runs from phone or tablet. Can also use it for games with a bit of tweaking.

^^ Blueman failed to complete setup three times. Thought of USB but doesn't appear to have a USB socket on the phone. Buggrit. Will keep fiddling wiv Blootoof stuffs and see if I can get it up and running.

Damn. What is the model of your phone?

Do none of the USB adapters fit in the charging socket? I'm pretty sure the charging socket doubles as the USB connector.

Aha! Good thinking. Yes and no it appears. One does fit into the chargey hole but nothing pops up on pooter and no obvious way to transfer anything on the phone itself. Perhaps a step forward all the same. Will continue to fiddle wiv fingz.

I don't know if it exists on your phone, but it does on other old Samsung phones, so I'm just hoping the software is similar. Apparently to set Mass Storage mode on the T659:

1. From the standby screen, press the left soft key for Menu
2. Select Settings
3. Select Personalized
4. Select Phone Settings
5. Select USB Mode
6 Highlight Mass Storage, using the navigation keys
Press the left soft key to Save the USB Mode Setting

But it might not exist. It's only recently that most phones have been built following standards like Mass Storage, it's possible you need to install a specific application from Samsung. I think they have something called PC Studio, which will be Windows software, which might just possibly work under Wine, but I think your PC dual boots into Windows 7 so that might be the path of least resistance.

Hmm... have pottered - and specifically pottered along the lines you suggest - and nowt like any of that to be seen. I've not really thought about installing extra software from Samsung. Might have to see what I can see. Dual boot option is Vista not W7 and am not a fan of Vista (who is :D) but do have a cracked copy of W7 if necessary. Would obviously rather find a simpler option of which there surely must be one. Although I may be too simple to spot it :o

Is frustrating cos Bluez seemed to do everything fine right up until trying to transfer stuffs. Am sure I'm missing summat very obvious. Will continue to potter and see if I can work summat out. Thanks - as ever - for the technical support, Knock <3
