Hmm... always thought of Chromium as mush lighter on resources than FF but suppose there's only one way to find out. Used to use Opera sometimes too which was always fairly swift but can't recall how hungry it is. Then there's fuckloads of other browsers to look into if feeling experimental. Have barely even checked the software store yet actually. Mainly cos it slowed the living shit outta me pooter whenever I opened it in Unity. Prefer Synaptic anyway for software needs but don't think it comes as standard anymore. Am sure I can remember how to install stuffs though. Thing is, once I start poking about the installation possibilities I tend to get a bit carried away. Eyes bigger than belly. And possibly bigger than I have room to put stuff too :D

A lil lesson in restraint would probably do me good though.

I also don't really see why it's been so slow generally. This pooter is more or less the same spec as one of me previous ones and that was never as slow. Presumably Ubuntu has grown a tad since I last used it and gotten a tad greedy in its old age.
 
I find Chromium to be pretty responsive on more lightweight hardware. You could also give Midori a go. It uses WebKit like Safari and konqueror for rendering and Gtk+ interface. It's noticeably zippy.
 
I think it's more than likely that my laptop is struggling with the OS itself and it's just way more visible in a browser than a mail client, which is all I ever use it for.

I should really start looking into a lighter environment innit.
 
Fact remains, Shammy, your machine has a reasonably modern dual core processor and a reasonable video card*. It should cope. I think it's memory restricted.

Can you let us know what the RAM configuration looks like? Open a terminal and run:

Then paste the interesting bit in here. The interesting bit is the section which starts *-memory and and has *-bank sections in it. Mine looks like this:

which tells me I have 4GiB RAM in two banks of 2GiB. It also says they are SODIMM DDR3 modules.

I suspect you have 1GiB in two banks of 512MiB DDR2.

I believe the machine supports a maximum of 4GiB as 2 2GiB modules or 4 1GiB modules. I think it takes DDR2 SDRAM up to 800MHz.

Worst case it's a ~ £30 upgrade to get the machine up to 4GiB. It's also a straightforward operation.


* By the way, please can you check this too with:

or even cover all three with:

OR (and this is new to me) you can install the GUI:

sudo apt-get install lshw-gtk

run it:

click refresh

and browse the system hardware that way. However it is much easier to produce a concise report of the relevant information using the command line interface.

But that will not show what type of memory modules are installed and are therefore compatible with the motherboard.

My intent is to identify suitable memory modules for an upgrade.

Now that implies I deliberately lemoned Shambles up! An implication I refute! ;) I wanted him back on the net tout-suite, so I was in a hurry. If I was in less of a hurry, I might have paid more attention to the RAM in the box. But we can fix it. And I'm vewy sowwy :( But we can fix it! :D

If he hurries up and gets online and starts fiddling with his bits, the ones on his computer, not the ones on his Shambolic self.
 
OS to me, means Ordnance Survey. Oh, you mean operating system? What's that? What system am I operating and why is it deficient to Linux? Apart from Linux having an X in it.
