A real man would used duct tape. ;)

Fawkes if you are getting it professionally repaired I doubt it would be much trouble for them to sand it for you also. Although it's not hard if you have the right tools, it is a messy pain in the arse. If you are only painting it then they wouldn't have to be that pedantic particularly as your under coat would hide a multitude of sins. I'm with Cletus though, nice dark stain would be my preference.
 
yep, agreed on the stain here also. DIY the sanding bit or have someone do it for ya... I choose the first as I love learning and honing new skills.

it has a L-A-S-E-R attached to the head to help you cut straight. %)

i used it to build a bird table, which was my wedding present to kate:

I finished my DIY bar three weeks ago.

I knocked the old bar, built, plastered and did a counter on the new one, re-wired the place, rerouted some plumbing. Took up the old floor tiles with a hammer and chisel, re-tiled, wallpapered, painted the wallpaper, put up shelves and unblocked the toilet. Does that count?

Took me one month.

(I am normally busier than when I took these two shots)

Without drawing a design this is the closest thing I could find to the sort of benches I like. Larger cuts of timber, slabs etc.....

heh, i do like the solidity of the first one, but i'm hoping for something slightly more aesthetically pleasing. :D and a bit comfier, that one looks like an instrument of torture.

one thing that is a must is extra wide armrests, to accomodate glasses, ashtrays, candles etc.

i've decided (or should i say it was decided for me ;)) not to build a loveseat with the table in the middle.

i've also pretty much settled on the choice of timber - Western Red Cedar.
 
When I visited that big house over on the Island of Arran. I saw these benches & thought about making similar when I get the room to do so. Solid looking things & relatively easy to make if you can do mortice & tenon joints.

OK, i've decided to put the bandsaw on hold for now. instead, i'm going to get a mitre saw:

this is only £48, which has to be a total bargain. it also has a laser on it too. %)

nice design! nae sure about mortice & tenon joints though, that's a bit advanced for me. :\
